shane and josh and i all resisted that in so many ways. and it was difficult, you know, to see two people that i loved as prisoners. i remember the first time that i was going down to the clinic and happened to pass by shane's hall where he was celled, and i saw him for the first time walking down his hallway blindfolded, carrying, stumbling and carrying a bag of trash. and for me to see someone that is the most free and beautiful and vibrant person that i've ever known subjected to that kind of senseless humiliation and degradation was very painful. and it was also incredibly amazing to see each other always fight back. always push the limits. josh would never wear his blindfold properly. and sometimes it kind of annoyed me. just do it, you know? like, whatever, you know? do we have to have this conversation with the guards again and again? but ultimately i admired it so much that josh never accepted that it was okay to be blindfolded walking down a hallway. so, i think that those notes that i passed back and forth to zara, the main messa

a shane said we have people in this country for years and decades. i work with solitary watch now and i collect oral and written histories, stories of people that are living in solitary confinement. through in-depth letter correspondence or i visit them in prison for interview people on the outside. some of the stories i told you a pali state human and how i resisted and kept myself alive, everyone that i write to and correspond with has these incredible stories. as devastating as it is the suicide rate is 50% higher for prisoners in solitary than the general population. a lot of people give up. a lot of people find no reason to keep fighting. the ones that do have incredible stories to tell so i want to bring them out. i'd been publishing an anthology in writing a play called opening the box. >> i too want to say thank you for coming. i'm amazed at your ability to take this kind of experience and try to make something good out of it. i'm traveling with a group of eight high school students from california, many of whom are foreign nationals and so t

foreign policy senior writer shane harris joins us. shane, explain to the american people who lady al qaeda is and why they want her out so badly. she is a pakistani born neuroscientist who lived for many years in the united states and studied here, received a ph.d. at began dies. grandice she popped up as being connected to al qaeda. her name came up one of the 9/11 master minds, of course, attorney general john ashcroft announced she was one of the most wanted terrorists that the u.s. was seeking. it took about four years but she suddenly popped up in afghanistan in 2008 and was taken into custody by afghan authorities there and they found on her a number of plans for weaponizing biological agents and a list of supposed startle in the united states. when american authorities went to question her they didn't know that the room she was hiding in afghan cell she jumped out at them. grabbed a rifle from one of the american service members who had been in there to help interrogate her and fired on u.s. officials and nearly killed them. sh
