thursday the man who beat that child to death, shane nickerson, was up for parole, after serving nearly 21 years in prison for second degree murder. >> he could have -- i could have spent every second everything. i didn't know then that i would only have 546 days with him. the pain he endured and the end. reporter: nickerson was baby-sitting for zachary in march of 1995. he was 23 years old at the time, and said he didn't know how to control himself when the child started crying. >> i am truly sorry for what i did, and i regret every moment of it every single day since i've been here. reporter: the board denied nickerson's parole saying that they first wanted to see him transition to a halfway house, hold down a steady job, and get some mental health counseling. kirkland, who now lives in south carolina, says she wanted to be here to make sure that the victim's voice can still be heard. >> he was a really sweet boy. he had a great smile, and it's hard to know that even after 20 years you don't see that again. you miss out on a lot of really great things because one person made a decisio
