shannon watts joins me now. shannon, thanks so much for coming on the show tonight.ou've welcomed disagreement as an activist. there wouldn't be an agreement if it wasn't for people like yourself. but i have to ask. i have to cut right to it. would anything in the steele have presented the mass shooting in uvalde? or buffalo? >> that's sort of a strongman argument. this is a historic agreement. we've been waiting for this for 26 years. that is the last time we had any kind of significant movement on gun safety legislation in congress. so, for these senators to come together and finally break the logjam around gun safety legislation, it shows that this is not just good policy. it's also good politics. i'm very hopeful that once they start with the language we will get to a place where this is historic. it will be life-saving. you are talking at -- you left out a really important part, also around domestic gun violence where this would address what we call the dating partner loophole and right now, 70 women are shot and killed every single month this in this country by

joining me is shannon watts, founder of moms demand action for gun sense in america, and charlie sykescontributor. what do you think of the legislation? >> the it is an important step and the fact that we're breaking this logjam, if we do and i think we will, is historic and we have to keep in mind that just a decade ago, about a quarter of all democrats in congress had an a-rating from the nra. today none do. the fact that republicans are in conversation with democrats and coming up with a framework that would save lives, it is very important and i want to keep in mind that this legislation will save lives, whether it's close the boyfriend loophole or making it more strict for people who want to buy guns and red flag laws and giving money to the states to make those more robust. all of that will save thousands of lives and we can't lose sight of that. >> charlie, i'm of two minds. i was on the air when uvalde happened and as a country decide no one should have their hands on a weapon of war so heinous and then you run in and save children. that's what the weapons that are out there an

joining me now from capitol hill is julie sirkin and shannon watts.ie, the house passed it, the senate passed it, we're should see it on the president's desk soon? >> reporter: that's right, katy. we don't know exactly when he will sign the bill. this isn't everything that president biden wanted it isn't everything that democrats in the negotiating group and the leadership wanted. the house passed bills that would go a lot further. that is the most progress made on this issue in three decades. they're not going to have universal background checks, they're not going to have a ban on assault weapons or raising the age to 21 on some assault weapons. last night there were organizers, shooting survivors, including from the groups moms demand action and others like sandy hook promise. one of them told me i thought this would take decades to do, this seemed to have happened overnight and i am speechless. >> what do you make of the other republicans, especially in the senate, joining the democrats? >> well, look, there. that is no small feat, especially on th

. >> joining me now is ali vitale and shannon watts. get your reporting on where we stand and also some clarity, if there is any, on what senator cornyn was saying about the boyfriend loophole when he talks about being very precise in the definition of the misdemeanors and felonies and taking away of guns for those individuals. do you have any idea of what language he wants to add or he's being asked to add? >> look, it's a question at this point of if the language is broad or if it is narrow. that's as it pertains to the so-called boy friend loop here. this is something regardless of what the bill text looks like that it looks like all democrats will be on board for. when we're talking about sticking points, we're talking about sticking points around the crafting of this language among republicans. how can they keep the ten republicans on board with that framework and then also potentially earn more votes, as signalled by senate majority leader mitch mcconnell. on the boyfriend loophole it's a matter of how broad or narrow it is and ho
