. >> nbc news reporter shaq brewster joining us now from minneapolis. you watched the chief. he announced that he's breaking off talks with the police union. police unions around the country have been okbstacles to reform measures even before this took place. what did you draw from his press conference today? >> reporter: andrea, it's important to step back and appreciate where and why the police chief was having this press conference today. this weekend we heard a majority of minneapolis city councilmembers saying they supported disbanding the police department here in minneapolis. and then you have the mayor on the other side saying it's time to push for real reform of the police department, not saying he wants to go that far. i think what we saw from the chief today was an effort to bridge the gap between those two positions. that's what you heard from the chief in terms of the specifics that he's been pushing for. number one, and you mentioned it, withdrawing from the police union negotiations over a new contract. he wants to see if he can get a measure, new steps to enfo

shaq brewster on the ground for us. good to see you. what is the latest from there?er: well, protests continue to happen in this twin city region. we saw yesterday thousands gathering in downtown minneapolis walk over six miles to the site where george floyd was killed and this morning you'll see a couple of hundred protesters outside of the governor's mansion and what they're calling for today is they want the governor to go back and through the attorney general go back and re-open cases from the past involving alleged police misconduct. they have several stories, their signs, advocating each individual name. someone who died. people who were beaten by the police and want them to go back and look into that. the governor promised he will use every tool to address what he called systemic practices and systemic discrimination. they want him to do this and take this step. one of the steps he took last week was that civil charge against the minneapolis police department, going back ten years, looking at the patterns and practices of that department. they want him to cont

my colleague shaq brewster is there. shaq, tell us about his first court appearance and the next steps in the case. >> steph, officer chauvin, former officer chauvin remains in police custody this morning. yesterday the judge set bail at $1 million with certain conditions, including turning over his firearms and not being able to do any law enforcement work if he were released. yesterday he appeared in that hearing via video conference. he had an orange jump suit on. his hands happenedcuffed and he had a blue surgical mask. he's facing those three charges against him. that original third degree murder charge and second-degree manslaughter, but then that charge was upgraded to second-degree murder as well. we will see officer chauvin in court again later this month on june 29th. he didn't enter a plea today but that's when we'll expect for him to enter a plea. during the argument, his attorneys made no argument or objection to the bail we saw posted. >>> let's head to detroit where the curfew ended last night but the prot

shaq, one sort of mega polling site today. polls were set to close at 6:00, there was some drama there. take us through what went down. >> reporter: that's right, steve. at about 6:00, you had people literally running to the polls, people at one polling location in jefferson county was at the kentucky expo center. it's a large convention center, which mean there is's a large parking lot. apparently, there was a delay of cars getting from the parking lot and getting into the expo center. and then voters getting to the door of the voting location. so i was there at 6:00, as you had a flood of people running with kids, with strollers, to go ahead and cast their ballot at 6:00 or shortly thereafter. the doors then closed. but then voters decided to stay. people banged on doors. they chanted "let us in, let us vote." about 25 minutes later after an injunction by a circuit court judge, those doors were reopened and 100 or so people that remained on the premises were able to come in and cast their ballot. outside of that, there was a
