shaq, the uaw is reported to have an $825 million strike fund. how long is the union and these workers prepared to strike? >> reporter: the phrase that you continue to hear is as long as necessary. yes, they have a sizable strike fund, and the way that they did this strike, which is unique, which is they're not having their whole union, the 146,000 people leave and walk off. instead they have about 13,000 over the three companies walking off the job. what that means is fewer employees that need to tap into that strike fund, and that could potentially lead to a longer strike. you know, this is a big sacrifice. when you talk to these workers, they're going to be getting about $500 a week. they have families. they have kids. they know they're going to be sacrificing. we just left kokomo, indiana, that was a concern they had, they were not one of the targeted plants. in that area where you have one in ten members of that community are members of the union, you can imagine what kind of impact that can have oaf entire communities, and unions have been

so shaq, you shared a tweet of how workers learned of the strike plan. it was basically a text alert from the union. what has been the reaction you're hearing from the rank and file, and what are you hearing from leadership? >> reporter: yeah, and that picture you're looking at are right now, that was sent to a union president in kokomo, indiana. many of the people there thought they would be one of the targets, but they learned from that they would not be, so their strike plans were averted. that is not the case here in toledo, ohio, at this plant, one of the three plants that have been targeted in this first wave of strikes. what you're hearing from autoworkers who have been out here since midnight, they're taking shifts as they take to the picket line. this comes down to respect. yes, they are aware that they're demanding higher wages. they're demanding a better work life balance, a focus on retirement but for them it comes down to the idea that they're seeing other american workers and their wages increase at a higher rate than their own salaries. an

so, shaq, you mentioned both this 40%, 46% cumulative pay raise. the reduction to 32 hours of work, restoration of traditional pension benefits instead of 401(k) or traditional defined compensation plans, these are all key components of the uaw's position. the counter offers that have been made, as shaq points out, just happening in the last 48 hours or so. general motors out just yesterday putting forth a proposal in line with key parts of the offer already made by ford as well. g m's frame work involves just a 20% bump in pay over the next four years. 20% seems like a lot, but it is not 40% to 46%. they twauk about this quicker path towards getting towards upper tiers of wages. they have also offered unspecified cost of living adjustments. and this is a big one. they promised not to shut down any u.s. manufacturing plants or warehouse facilities. they have offered up to five weeks of paid vacation, alongside two weeks of parental leave. the uaw is taking that firmer line on those points, not just the 40% pay bump. we mentioned the 32 hour workwee

joining me now is shaq brewster.upreme court upheld a lower court's decision to throw out this map. why did republicans come back with a map that was almost exactly the same? >> that seems like the question that you heard this federal panel of judges ask themselves and put pretty plainly in this ruling. this was a scathing ruling. you heard terms like deeply troubled. they said they were disturbed. the court is now essentially telling the state of alabama that you didn't do your job when we told you to draw maps that have the correct population so we're going to do it for you. they're appointing a special master, an expert, to draw their own maps that the court will impose on the state of alabama. let's back up a little bit because what happened here is after the 2020 census, you saw is state legislature draw maps that took away one of the two black majority districts in the state. in a way that the court ruled was unconstitutional. state has about a 27% black population. well, the court struck those down. it went up

nbc's shaq brewster is following the latest in the case. shaq, thanks for joining us on this. off, what is the latest in the judge's ruling? what he did say. >> reporter: the big thing is the sentencing will be in december. and that's the key moment to watch for. but this was a key decision from this judge because he was determining if the maximum sentence possible, that life without parole, was possible for this 15-year-old, he is now 17, but someone who was 15 years old when he committed these murders. now, he pleaded guilty to these murders. that process is done. the trial is done. but in terms of that sentence, the judgment, 25 point, his maturity and age when he committed the murders, but his family background, how serious that murder was, two of the students were shot execution style, so he went through all of the details of that and made the decision that he was able to stand trial and that he would be able to get that life without parole when the sentencing happens in december. >> in 10 seconds, where are the parents in all of this? >> reporter: the parents are in jail

shaq, auto workers are on strike against three companies. general motors, ford, and stellantis. some of the key union demands include a 40% hourly pay increase, reduced weekly hours in pension reform. do you think that we are going to expect to see a resolution soon as these negotiations continue? >> good morning. you see the energy, i'm sure you hear the energy behind me, but it of course does not appear as if any deal is eminent at this point. what we do know is that the uaw offered what they call a comprehensive counterfeit puzzle to the big three automakers because we are experiencing the strike. that means essentially that they did not accept that proposal. and so we do know that negotiations will begin again today. we can expect to see both sides engaging and exchanging some of those offers back and forth. and you know, you mentioned some of those demands. the big sticky one that you keep hearing the automakers go back onto the increase in wages. the 40% increases that the uaw is asking for. i want to dig into that a little bit, because it's also the wages, but also what t
