shaquille brewster in missouri, dr. jha, and ron, cnbc senior analyst and commentator.d morning to all of you guys. so, shaq, let's start with this booster shot. what's pfizer saying? >> reporter: yeah. well, pfizer is saying it plans to submit for federal authorization for a booster shot of its vaccine, citing some research saying that if taken within a third shot, if the third shot is taken within six to 12 months after becoming fully vaccinated, that can provide additional immunity, especially against that delta variant, which continues to grow and spread across the country. but overnight, the cdc and fda releasing a joint statement touting the effectiveness of the existing vaccines that are already on the market. i'll read a little bit from their statement. they say, americans who have been fully vaccinated do not need a booster shot at this time. they say we are proceed for all booster doses if and when the science demonstrates that they are needed. you see their primary focus is on vaccinating the unvaccinated, especially in areas like missouri where the delta var

shaquille brewster is in new york city where the mask mandate is in order. thank you to both of my guests for being with me. in the last 30 minutes or so the st. louis mayor spoke about the new mask restrictions. that region made up 20% of the state's new infections least week. what are you hearing? >> yeah, that press conference wrapping up in the last few minutes. they are explaining this decision to reimpose the mask mandate. you heard them explain is as the delta variant throwing them a curve ball saying the numbers are simply too high to ignore. you also heard them frame this mask mandate as a stopgap measure to help get to the point, to bridge the gap, to the point in which the vaccination numbers are ticking up a big. not enough they say until they're at a level to really help stop the spread. they also said there was politics at play in terms of the opposition that we're already seeing to this mask mandate. opposition from the state attorney general that will file a lawsuit as soon as today. you heard the mayor had strong words against the attorney g

let's turn to shaquille brewster and dr. peter hotez. you heard tom's report, rising numbers? japan, but still comparative low, but pair that with a low vaccination rate and this delta variant. does this move make sense to you? >> it makes no sense to have the olympics right now, for a number of reasons. first of all, the percentage in japan that's been vaccinated is extremely low, 15% fully vaccinated, far less than half the rate of the united states. for instance, the delta variant is ascending, so places the japanese people at risk. remember, as good a job as we've done in the united states and parts of canada and western europe and the nordic countries, that's about it. we have athletes coming in from all over the world. so this is going to create this crucible of covid-19. i don't see how this goes well it would have been better to canceled, or at least -- the problem is japan needed help. the world did not offer the help. if the world wanted olympics, all hands on deck, they would have ensured that -- nobody really kay to the aid of japan. that's part of the problem. >>
