nbc's shaquille brewster is on the ground in charleston with the latest. >> nowhere near what floridamany citizens and from local officials here. they are saying that they are breathing a sigh of relief. they feel like they dodged a bullet. that's not to say that they did not experience any damage. this is just some of the damage that we have been seeing as we go around the city. this is one of what the city says is 55 downed trees across the city of charleston, and when you look at what charleston had to face, yes, the eye at this norm was about 60 miles north of charleston, but that still means that they are about 70 mile per hour wind gusts that the experience. that still means that they have historic amounts of rain. they had the rainiest day since any time in any 24-hour period since 1938, so the impacts that they faced were significant, but they pale in comparison to what we are seeing in florida, and because at that, the recovery has also been accelerated. the city reporting most of the roads that were flooded that were closed, have since been cleared. this is one of the roads

i'm joined now by shaquille brewster in wisconsin. what messages are the candidates sepding to voters as they start heading to the polls today? >> reporter: on this first day of early in-person voting, they're asking voters to hey, come out and vote for me. you're seeing that on both sides here. you mentioned we saw lieutenant governor barnes going to cast his ballot at 9:00 a.m., at the moment polls opened. he was one of the first people to do that in milwaukee. we see the governor running for re-election, barn storming the state asking his voters to vote early and we're also hearing that message from senator ron johnson. ron johnson, i just left an event where he said this year, we're asking republicans to come out and vote early and that's, despite the fact you mentioned in 2020, he's cast doubt on the election administration and how things were run here in wisconsin. this year just about a week ago, he set up a website encouraging his supporters and voters if they see any voting violations, to report it on his website to be review

shaquille brewster is in milwaukee for us.on voters already voted by mail, i understand. what are you hearing from folks as they head to the polls now? >> well, they're taking this seriously. the intensity in wisconsin is picking up. from the moment the polls opened at 9:00 a.m., we saw the lieutenant governor, the democrat in this race, go and cast his ballot at an early voting location in milwaukee. and then here in wakasha, we have the incumbent senator here, encouraging people to cast their ballot and vote early in this battleground state. this is one of those races that democrats believed coming in that this was a key pickup opportunity for them. this is a race where if you look at polling, ron johnson is not the most popular senator. he did look vulnerable. but you see the polling now and it is neck in neck. you have a lot of outside fun, a lot of outside focus in the big name surrogates you mentioned. pete buttigieg. before then on wednesday, you will see elizabeth warren and glenn youngkin. with the 50/50 senate, every

. >> and joining us now from madison, wisconsin, msnbc correspondent shaquille brewster, he was in the he joins us now. thank you for taking time to talk to us. wisconsin, it is one of the preeminent battlegrounds, every election it term, presidential, top, if you want, about the dynamics that are defining this governor's race. i'm curious, being on the ground out there, are they different at all than the dynamics in the senate race, where we saw some of the clips from that heated debate last night? >> if you want to compare tonight's debate to what we saw last night, or what we saw tonight, to dramatically different themes. there was a much more contentious debate last night. this, tonight, the debate, tonight, we saw a much more polite contrast drawing between the two candidates. that's not to say there were no differences in this debate. we sought to michaels come out pretty sharp. he was on message. we saw him attempt to moderate some of those positions that he has been getting attacked for on the airwaves, on abortion, for example. we know that previously. he has said, and stands
