first and foremost it's probably not the same shark. there's probably multiple sharks.he folks who live in western australia are very comfortable knowing this is an area great whites live in. we know great white numbers have dropped over time. but this is it a large coastal area and since 2000 there's only been seven fatalities, this is the seventh in the whole western australia in 11 years. you really need to look at risk. it's far more dangerous to drive to the beach, risk of fatality in a car accident than it is to be involved in a shark bite incident at a beach. >> wow, i guess final question. is there really any way to prevent shark attacks? >> there's certainly some things we do recommend. we recommend that it people don't swim at dusk and dawn, the peak shark feeding times. also be aware of your surroundings. if there's a lot of marine mammals or bait fish in the area, beware and get out of the water. discretion is a better part of valor. we do know the first attack that happened in western australia in september, it's right around the corner from a very large se

a dead shark. absolutely not true. on top of their intrinsic value and beauty and gracefulness, sharks play a very, very important role in the environment. in a world with increasing population and declining natural resources food security is an increasing concern. fisheries security -- fisheries provide trillions of dollars to the global economy. and without healthy shark populations on coral reeves they provide the same role as wolves do in yellow stone, for example, helping to keep the populations of the other animals in that ecosystem in check and the ecosystem as a whole healthy. so having sharks healthy in a space and on a coral reef ecosystem is critical to maintaining a healthy environment. as i said with dwindling natural resources we absolutely cannot afford it's putting dinner on people's plates and money in their pockets to continue to kill sharks the way we've been doing. >> how gruesome is it, spare us the gory details. how painful is it for the sharks themselves when they're killed f

shark attacks hit a 10-year high.spoke with an underwater photographer who has experience with sharks and shark bites, and he wants to know what may have led to this latest attack. >> reporter: 32-year-old george wayne wright was diving alone in western australia when he was faye -- fatally attacked by a shark. they saw bubbles coming from the water and called for help. a 10-foot great white surfaced and nudged the dive boat. as wainwright's friends retrieved his body. >> he floated to the surface and the shark was seen to come back into thompson's bay. >> we try to pride ourselves in collecting enough dat to be able to predict behavior of these animals. >> he's an underwater film maker who has made a career of swimming towards these dangerous sharks. he says shark attacks like this one are all too familiar. i think about this accident of mine. it was provoked. i hope the story that comes out is filled with accurate information. >> it's important to understand shark behavior before determining whether there's a shark

i used to be really scared of sharks. every time i'd swim in the ocean, i was convinced there were sharks lurking there, watching me, waiting to attack me. not too long ago on an assignment for "60 minutes," i went scuba diving with great white sharks. i went without a cage. that's me with the great white sharks there. i had about a half dozen great white sharks circling around me, and i was scared. i was fearful, rightfully so. what was so amazing about that experience, doing that totally changed my perception of sharks and i no longer have this irrational fear of them. i don't think they're warm and cuddly, but i no longer believe they're out to get me. there are two things, however, that sadly i am still afraid of in my life. bugs and heights. and i know it's ridiculous. i go to war zones. i've been shot at. i've had people attack me. bugs, especially bugs with lots of little legs, for some reason creep me out. and also heights. in just a couple of minutes, i'm going to confront my own fear of heights. i didn't want to
