we start with sharon katsuda talking to investigators on 880. sharon?er: well, here's the very latest. we just talked to the chp sergeant and he tells us it's going to take about three more hours to open highway 880 southbound here. you can still see several chp units behind me and there's actually the car you can see that far away. we can zoom in a little there. you can see the car with the doors open on the highway still and that's what's going to take some time to collect evidence and take the car off the highway. over to my left here you can see that there are cars being diverted down lewalling boulevard here. it's a traffic nightmare and getting into the morning work commute. and so, the chp officers at this time say they're still looking far suspect. some video we shot earlier today of the chp investigators taking a look at the evidence and the bullet casings. officers say the driver of the car that's still on the highway right now was shot at by a passenger in another car. the chp investigative unit on the way and still searching for the suspect.

[ speaking spanish ] >> reporter: this woman describes her husband hugo as the best man she knows, the best husband and the best father. >> i am a good guy. >> reporter: this was hugo mejia three months ago in the correctional center in elk grove just after he was detained. mejia and his co-worker rodrigo nunes were both arrested at travis air force base in may. the two were going through military security on their way to a construction job at david grant medical center. mejia said he didn't know the hospital was on the base. he gave security his legal california driver's license number and car registration but left his social security number blank because he doesn't have one. he and nunes are undocumented. nun

kpix5's sharon chin reports police say a different crime, an armed robbery at st. mary's cathedral square, led the investigators right to them. >> reporter: police made the arrests in the st. mary's robbery first, then made the connection to the killing here attwin peaks. officers arrested 19-year-old lamonte mims of patterson, a convicted felon. they booked 20-year-old fantasy decuir of san francisco. >> both these individuals are responsible for the murder of mr. french. >> reporter: the pair is accused of shooting 71-year-old edward french, a commercial locations scout, at the twin peaks lookout last month. police called 911, but french died in the hospital with a gunshot in his upper body. his camera was stolen. then almost two weeks later officers say a 53-year-old man and a 33-year-old woman had their wallet and cameras stolen at gunpoint at st. mary's cathedral square. police say they did not suffer life threatening injuries. investigators arrested mims and decuir for the armed robbery, then made a connection to the twin peaks shooting. >> cameras were taken
