sharon crowley, fox 5 news. much for that. let's continue to talk about this. joining me now is rasha simmons, chief of breast surgery at new york presbyterian and wilde cornell medicine. we were talking about this last week. what is your reaction to this new screening guideline? >> right. well, now what they're saying is to start mammograms at 45, which is older than the recommendations before, and then at age 55 or so, either stop them or every other year. my concern is that there are a lot of young women in their 40s who will be denied the diagnosis, early diagnosis, and a cure if we don't do mammograms early enough. likewise, in the older population, women today live good, healthy lives, into their 80s and 90s. to stop mammograms in your 50s and take away 30 or 40 healthy years of life, i don't understand. it doesn't make sense. ernie: you told me this was in the making. are you surprised? financial. it is expensive to do a lot of cancer. if you're that one woman, it makes a difference for you. we saved your life. ernie: what do you recommend? women who are

sharon crowley has the tragic details. >> gunshots right now, even the classroom on the southeast side. >> reporter: chilling words as law enforcement response to oregon's community college campus and come face-to-face with a mass murderer. >> the first 911 calls came at 10:38 this morning. all law enforcement in the area responded immediately to the campus. the active shooter was engage by law enforcement and later confirmed to be deceased. >> i look out the window and a couple girls running, sprinting away from the building and i heard screaming. >> reporter: surviving students of the 20 mad gunman walked into her classroom, shot her teacher and demand everyone get on the floor. then started asking people to stand up, state their religion and opened fire again. the college president says they immediately went into lock down. >> i feel awful. to witness the families that were waiting for the students, to see all of the hugs and trauma that has gone on, more people were hurt than just the ones that were shot. >> reporter: this community is 180 miles south of portland. the governor of o

sharon crowley is in the newsroom with the latest. what a tragic day. >> reporter: hard to believe we're reporting on this again. 13 people are dead after a gunman opened fire on the campus of umpqua community college in roseburg in southwestern oregon. 20 others were injured. oregon state police say the 20-year-old gunman was shot and killed by authorities. here's new information. a surviving student says the gunman entered the classroom, told people to get on the ground and then started asking people to stand up and state their religion. after that, he opened fire. police have not said what his motive was. the community is about 180 miles south of portland. the college has 3,000 students. when that gunfire started, s.w.a.t. teams and atf teams rushed to the campus. hospitals were put on alert. there was a news conference within the hour. >> our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families. we are holding the community of douglas county in our hearts today. >> the first 911 calls came in in the roseburg area at 10:30.
