i'm sharon epperson in tonight for sue herera. >> welcome. i'm tyler mathison. the two-day federal reserve meeting began today, a day that saw broad-based stock market gains and a rise in oil prices. that as you might expect helped lift the energy sector. by the close the dow jones industrials were up 156 points to 17,524. the nasdaq added 43. and the s&p 500 was up 21. bob pisani as more on today's gains ahead of tomorrow's big meeting. >>> stocks hadck positive day, though they came off their highs towards the close. a big help was the two biggest problem sector, oil and high-yield bonds, both behaved themselves today. it also helps we're entering a traditionally seasonably strong period of the year and this is the time tax selling usually abates. there's a problem though -- the fed. most traders accept that the fed really wants to start raising rates. that's not so much a problem. the issue is how fast will they raise the rates. most expect the fed to say they'll raise rates very, very sloefl. the concern is the fed's chair, janet yellen, inadvertently or not

thanks, sharon epperson. keeping an eye on stocks, turning higher. if they hold, it would break the losing streak. the s&p 500 up .03%. he just put out his 2016 outlook today. this is a change from you. you have been pretty optimistic and pretty positive among wall street economists. are you changing your mind? >> for me, the tide has turned. i see growth next year of about 2.2% on a year over year basis. it is down 50 basis points from where i have been. growth staying around 2% hopefully. it is at least 2. there are risks with the up side and the down side. i have been accentuating the risks. >> they are doing the fed's job, essentially tightening policy and hurting our economy. >> the fed is going to be hiking rates into a profit recession. >> is that the pabasis of your more negative outlook. >> they showed the best year for growth was 2010 at just 2.7%. after those revisions, it is clear the best we could do is 2 something. with all the q.e., with recession and manufacturing, you have to be more cautious. that's what my view now reflects. >> dav

but sharon epperson is covering it all for us from the news desk. >> tyler, president obama has been briefed on the situation. this is what we know. the los angeles unified school district closed all schools after it received an e-mail threat to students safety. the district superintendent says the threat was against students not just a single school and a school spokeswoman says the threat was sent via e-mail to a district board member from an internet address in frankfurt, germany. keeping in mind, it is not that difficult to fake an internet address or create a fake one, but l.a. officials say the san bernardino shooting on december 2nd influenced their decision to close all schools in the l.a. school district. it is the nation's second largest school district with more than 640,000 students and 900 schools. new york city actually received the same threat but determined it was a hoax and mayor bill diblasio said he was absolutely convinced there is no danger to school children in new york. meanwhile, l.a. mayor eric garcetti said it is premature to make judgements. we're awaiting
