. >> sharon katsuda is live with a look at the impact it could have for commuters. good morning, sharon. >> reporter: good morning. you can see traffic is not too heavy right now. that is sure to change in the next couple hours. this project with the express lanes is set to ease congestion on this major corridor to san francisco. caltrans is looking for your input on express lanes in this area. the proposal is to charge drivers in the express lanes during the hours of 5:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., similar to other parts of the bay area. we saw the express lanes. other express lanes charge from several dollars to less than a dollar to use it during peak commute hours. the express lane was along highway 101 from whipple road to 380 near san francisco airport. if approved, the construction could begin in may, 2019. a public hearing will take place at redwood city at san mateo hall. live in san mateo county, sharon katsuda, "today in the bay." >> thank you so much, sharon. >>> it is 5:06. happening today, president trump scheduled to announce the u.s. will recognize jerusalem

sharon katsuda is live outside one of those scenes this morning. and, sharon, a lot of damage left behind. >> reporter: that's right, marcus. we're here on madill street. you can see the fire tore through this house, the wine does and door are boarded up here. over here, you can see the garage is also boarded up. we spoke to one of the homeowner's daughters and she said she is heartbroken, but she definitely wants the suspects caught. you can see the fire also tore through the home right next door and other structures behind this home that look a lot worse that caught on fire. now less than a mile away on a street, a neighbor shot this video last night at a commercial building which was once a crematorium. firefighters say they believe all the fires were intentionally set because they started within minutes of each other after 10:00 last night. she lived in an apartment complex right next to the build pentagon she says another fire broke out at the same building last october. you can see her video of that fire. she says neighbors need to be aware an

"today in the bay's" sharon katsuda is live outside one of the fire scenes.his really is showing us some of that damage left behind. >> reporter: that's right. a lot of damage just at this one building we are seeing behind us. take a look. you can see the damage on the rooftop there. the charred siding. one of the neighbors tells us these windows have been boarded up. she's concerned there was a fight here last october at the same building. this neighbor gave us this video from last night's fire. you can see the flames shooting high up from the building. this fire on a street happened at about 11:30 last night. she says another fire broke out at the same location and she says you can see the video here, we have a call into the contra costa county fire and the cause of that fire from last october. meantime, investigators are looking into last night's fire at several locations. firefighters got the call around 10:00 last night about structure fires on madil street and a street. the fire caused major damage inside this building on a street. all other structures

sharon katsuda is live to explain why this might happen. we have been talking about this for months now. >> reporter: that's right. good morning, kris and marcus. definitely a lot of neighbors around here affected by these decisions. now, the schools around this area are located near highway 85 and highway 101. if you would like to speak out, the public hearing takes place here at 5:30 tonight. the closures may be necessary due to lower enrollment at some schools in the south san jose and western regions. the school is on the list for possible closure include minor, anderson, baldwin, frost, glider, oak ridge and santa teresa high. you can see there on the map. the district says despite growing construction in the bay ar area, there is limited housing growth for families with children. that's affecting enrollment n. 2016, there were 30,000 students in the district. by 2023 rk, the district expect 12% drop innen rollment. they will hold a public hearing tonight at 5:30. live in san jose, i'm sharon katsuda, "today in the bay." >> a lot of pa

. >> for the holidays, "today in the bay" sharon katsuda is live with what we need to know if you're going to be heading outside. >> reporter: good morning, laura and marcus, yes, it's getting heavier out here, the traffic is. i spoke to an uber driver who said he didn't see many problems overnight as he was driving around but the concern is that there may be ice on the roadways in the higher elevation areas. you could see frost on your cars this morning, on the way to work in the east bay i saw temperatures in the low 30s, it was a bit warmer in san francisco. depending on where you're driving this morning be careful for icy conditions. if you hit an icy patch and start to slide, do not hit the brakes. instead turn into the slide and eventually hopefully you will be heading straight again. don't try to overcorrect because that could cause you to lose even more control. as more people start heading out to the mountains for the holidays, do remember to reduce your speed in icy conditions at least to 45 miles per hour. that's what the chp is reporting. reporting live in millbrae, i'm s

i'm sharon katsuda, "today in the bay." >>> tracking the dropping temperatures with our nbc bay area app, make sure you download it for free to monitor the changes in your neighborhood. >>> breaking news out of australia overnight. nearly 20 feet are hurt after a car deliberately crashed into a crowd on melbourne street -- the driver did. police say there is no evidence to suggest this is a terror attack, however. the driver has been arrested. he was alone in that car. police say he is a 32-year-old australian citizen with a history of drug use and mental health issues. >>> right now 5:05 and live look at washington this morning. today congress may take steps to prevent a government shutdown. lawmakers were just dealing with the issue earlier this month. at that time congress voted on a temporary spending bill. it runs out tomorrow. we expect the house to vote later today on another short-term bill putting off tough decisions until mid-january. that means issues like disaster relief, daca and domestic surveillance will have to wait. and without a health insurance for kids in danger.
