"politics nation" with al sharpton starts right now. >> thanks, chris. and thanks to you for tuning in. i'm live from atlanta. tonight's lead, republicans need a reality check on guns. they need to see the human face on tragedy. they need to see the horrible toll this violence and their policies are taking on our children. that's what the president was doing today. this afternoon, president obama took his fight for gun safety to his hometown of chicago. a city that's been torn apart by gun violence. in the crowd was mother of hadiya pendleton, the 15-year-old honor student who was shot and killed just a week after attending the inauguration. >> fortunately, what happened to hadiya is not unique. too many of our children are being taken away from us. two months ago, america mourned 26 innocent first graders and their educators in newtown. the overwhether he will ming majority of americans are asking for some common sense proposals to make it harder for criminals to get their hands on a gun. these proposals deserve a vote in congress. they deserve a vote.

joining me is al sharpton. it's good to have you. you had a late night last night.et's talk about the estimated number 200,000 voters in florida that got turned away because of the long lines. the hours of waiting, what do you think? what do you make of a bipartisan committee put together by the president's team, mitt romney's people to look at this issue? >> i think it's a good move. i would, of course, the devil would be in the details as we see what the commission, who else will be on it, what teeth it would have. but it's absolutely necessary. when the president highlighted the 102-year-old lady, i was in florida chapter with the bishop. it was part of those that kept driving people out. he had a thing called operation lemonade. we would have had more than 200,000 people turned away if you hadn't had the efforts of those activists in florida. i know firsthand what he's doing as president with this commission is needed. but we're kboing to need some tangible, con crete things from this commission that can be enacted, which is why by making it bipartisan is a wise

>> that's absolutely right, reverend sharpton. over four decades, four times the supreme court upheld section v against constitutional challenges. it's recognized as a crowning achievement and has gone a distance in recognizing racial discrimination in those places is a different character. it's more intense, more persistent. section v is a strong medicine, a strong remedy to a strong type of discrimination that's persisted over time. the supreme court recognized the gains we have seen have been part and partial of section v. what the court recognized today in oral argument, there's been progress, but discrimination. there was a moment in the oral argument when justice briar asked, i think we, the court, have consensus around two points, one, we have traveled a tremendous distance in seeking to eradicate the voting. justice briar posted the question to the lawyer. who can address it? is it you? the lawyer for alabama put his hands up, no, it's not me. the congress in 2006 met that question. congress conducted 21 hearings over ten
