joining me is al sharpton. the host of politics nation on msnbc.cuss this issue. give us a sense of what was discussed and if progress was made. >> what we discussed was how we carve out around the filibuster or reform the filibuster. do you lower the number from the necessary votes to 53? what we are trying to do is get a way to get this done. i think what we have seen now with the president speaking out and the priorities now of given in the senate, we are better than where we were, but we are nowhere where we need to be. we are need to be in a position where we have a clear 50 votes in the democratic caucus saying they will change the rules if necessary. on the filibuster to pass the john lewis bill. this is the future of democracy. how can we as states are as i speak changing state election laws displacing some of the local election boards that count the votes? how can we sit here and talk about next year when they are not waiting to next year to change state votes? >> any sense of joe manchin playing ball? >> i think he has been in the convers

>> well, first, we agree with reverend sharpton. we want to get this done. this is existential. voting rights done is something people across the country should be able to rely congress to do, protect their basic ability to go to the polls and vote for whoever they want to vote for. it is really crazy this isn't something that is already protected. the change here, which reverend sharpton is certainly familiar with, to get legislation passed, you need 60 votes. if you don't get 60 votes, you have to change the rules in the senate. there is not support for that in this point in time. getting voting rights done is essential. if the republicans continue to obstruct, we're going to have to look at what is necessary to get that done. we'd love to do that as quickly as possible. the president would love to sign a voting rights bill into law. >> jen, lastly, we know the president had a close contact with somebody in recent days who had tested positive for the coronavirus. is there any sense there that the protocols around the white house could change with this surging new variant? >> w
