she did help make old shasta the state historic parks. she helped name shasta down. and also, her paintings and some of her books are also out at the old shasta courthouse museum. so she did a lot for the community even though she didn't live here. so the next one we're going to look at is something, an event that was very important to our county was of course the gold rush. we have a lot of people flocking to shasta county. they did a lot of damage to the environment and they destroyed a lot of the native american lands. but they did find a lot of gold and minerals here. this is one of my all-time favorite books. it is a report on all the mines that are in shasta county. i use this book because a very common question that i have is can you tell me where to pan for gold so i can become rich and i can't tell you the exact place to strike it rich in shasta county but this is the starting place. this is in here, it talks about the locations of all the mines in shasta county and the types of minerals that they were mining so this is a start. >> it's the california smelte

is our biggest export, our biggest dollar producer here in shasta county. one of the things we did was a deep dive into old newspaper articles and old directories from the 19th and 20th century trying to get a handle on the various crops we were looking at. we found this farmers and ranchers listing and this is only the people who are registered. many are represented in anderson. only 25,000 people in the county at this point. commercial grade growing had the successful but in 1960, acreage reported was devoted to wine, but it was only 10 acres, so the growing had collapsed but then expands again because we compared0 acres which to other places in california is not many. this is a new rise like the rest of california, growing wine grapes. another amazing shasta county success story is b's, not just the honey, but the b's. andh b'sarted getting honey since they got here but the queen bee industry started with a man named homer parks who became interested in b's became interested in the queen bees in high school. he started specifically breeding and raising q

we generate more money than we need to operate shasta. they are looking for a big basin, something that would be able to hold a lot of water, so a natural valley is important. we are situated here at shasta where we get about 75% of the state's precipitation right to the north of us. by building the dam here we are also providing flood control to the city of redding. you want to look for an area where the water is, the natural basin. here are ways three sites that would be good sites for a dam. this was chosen for its proximity north of reading -- north of redding. this is the lobby north of the power plant. public. open to the you may drive down, come in here and use this as a central place to start visiting shasta dam. after 9/11 it was closed down. theere not able to bring public into this area. back in 2008 we were able to open back up again to the public . when we redid this room we maintain the vermont marble. the furniture you see is early 1950's lobby furniture, and we kept it just because it is kind of cool to bring you back to t

shasta county is an agricultural county. we have a lot of great photos of agricultural scenes, and we thought it was time to do a big exhibition that celebrates the history and modern practices of agriculture in our area. right now, we are standing on wintu land. before european settlers got here, the native population lived in tune with the land where they did not cultivate crops in the way we think of growing crops. they cultivated the natural environment to their benefit. they grew willow trees back to make baskets. but their population size was right for the area. this particular spot was an amazing salmon fishery at the time. they lived off the land and lived well before white people got here in 1844. before that, people had been driving cattle and exploring through, but they had not actually settled. our wintu population and other populations were heavily influenced by that. we want to celebrate the fact that these people were here and used the land. we have a wintu copper mortar. the baskets are for carrying crops. to
