when you go past lake shasta on your way up towards mount shasta city, you go through these -- these areas. and you can see how vertical the hillsides are. this stuff is right off the freeway. you have seen the pictures. so terrain is a big, big part of this problem, tons of wood and brush to burn. but the terrain is brutal and there are not a lot of access roads. look at the smoke plume. there it is. it's extending outward. the fire grew great le overnight as you would expect it would. firefighters got a break today in the weather. look at the numbers, very un-redding-like or shasta- like. 80 degrees, 20% humidity. 86 degrees, almost 20%. and 91 degrees down at a site we call antlers, 91 degrees. the story is it's summer. the weather is cooperating as much as it can. but we are talking about topography, some of the most remote, some of the roughest vertical terrain anywhere in the state of california. and they're there. so when i come back, we'll talk about the forecast. it includes a bit of a heat-up as we head into tomorrow, which would be not super helpful for firefighting effort
