shasta county is an agricultural county. we have a lot of great photos of agricultural scenes, and we thought it was time to do a big exhibition that celebrates the history and modern practices of agriculture in our area. right now, we are standing on wintu land. before european settlers got here, the native population lived in tune with the land where they did not cultivate crops in the way we think of growing crops. they cultivated the natural environment to their benefit. they grew willow trees back to make baskets. but their population size was right for the area. this particular spot was an amazing salmon fishery at the time. they lived off the land and lived well before white people got here in 1844. before that, people had been driving cattle and exploring through, but they had not actually settled. our wintu population and other populations were heavily influenced by that. we want to celebrate the fact that these people were here and used the land. we have a wintu copper mortar. the baskets are for carrying crops. to

i can't tell you the exact place to strike it rich in shasta county but this is the starting place. in here it talks about the locations of all the mines in chester county and the type of minerals they were mining so one of the most famous mines in our area from an environmental perspective is the iron mountain mine which was the largest superfund site in the united states. so we are a repository for the information, it is an epa cleanup site so we do have all the information about the iron man here but we have many minds that are throughout the county different companies that we are working. this next one is a bit of a landscape and if the california farmer delta war of 1897 and 1916 and this is an interesting one because during this time period we had a large lawsuit going on about the destruction of the environment and i find it interesting that so early in the 1900s they were already getting concern about the environment. i think i find it interesting that from my perspective personally, i didn't realize that time. that the locals were starting to get home concerned because were

our community would have and we have a far-reaching community, we go beyond redding and beyond shasta county. we have people who come from as far away as even southern oregon,sacramento and to the east and west in the foothills in some of the mountain communities . >> how did you get involved in what's your role? >> were going back to so many years ago that i can't believe i'm old enough to tell you the whole story but i've always for years and years i've been interested in writing. i wasn't sure what sort of writing so i took some news writing and reporting courses at our local college and went on to take photojournalism classes and then when we ran out of courses in writing in the area, i started looking for groups and i saw an ad for a critique group, joined that group run by a lovely woman was here in town for a few years, her husband was finishing a medical internship at one of our hospitals. when we realized we had avril people doing tentatively with eachother, we brought those groups together into one organization . and that was how it began in the early 80s. and it grew and developed
