our shawn chitnis is out there with a look at how everybody is settling in. >> reporter: move-in day continues at cal state east bay, an exciting time for students and families as they get ready to go into the dorms . here, they are in the process of doing that right now. another day of students looking to find their roommates and get settled in. we know hundred were able to do that on the first day, and many more will join them as this process continues into the weekend. we had a chance to talk to some students who have already moved in, they said they are excited to be part of the campus community and they really wanted the opportunity to live on campus and have roommates and dorms filled with other students like them. we also talked to housing staff who say they have around 1000 students who will join the campus community this year , and spaces are still available for other students who want to have that on-campus housing experience. it is part of a trend showing that more people want to be part of residential life here, but the numbers are still not where they were before the pan

shawn chitnis is live at the alameda ferry. a lot of people are waking up to poor air quality. how is it looking now. >> amanda, that concern for the air quality is coming from the pictures we saw of serious smoke coming from the side of that fire. we are glad to show you now that the fire is looking the best we have seen it all morning. no flames visible at this time. none of that thick dark smoke high in the sky. a little bit of smoldering from what we can tell at this location. this comes more than 12 hours after firefighters started to attack this fire last night. the latest that we are getting from the fire department is that they made some progress and that the debris pile that started the fire has gotten smaller. that was part of the tiling that created so -- challenge yesterday. heavy equipment was needed to move around the debris to get to the starting point. that took time but they were able to get progress done this morning. people in oakland noticed a disstink smell right away. this morning as we caught cut manager here, they described what it was like to smell the

this morning shawn chitnis shows us the aftermath as crews monitor hotspots . >> reporter: we know the seven apartments were damaged, according to the red cross. this was a large response from the san francisco fire department and this morning there crews you are monitoring the situation, as they have boarded up one of the businesses that was impacted by this fire. more than 100 san francisco firefighters were needed to stop this three alarm fire spreading over multiple buildings. here is a look at the scene last night at the intersection of eighth avenue and irving. when crews first arrived around 8:30 in the evening, they said heavy fire was coming from the second floor of a three-story apartment complex. according to the red cross, there are 24 units in the building. no one was hurt. >> this is a great example to be prepared. you never know when a fire will occur. make sure you have working smoke alarms in your home . make sure you have an escape plan. >> reporter: crews contain the fire in about two hours . the red cross was not able to tell us how many people they may have helped

shawn chitnis is live in the sunset for us this morning where that fire broke out. and shawn, is that scene still active this morning? i think i see some flashing lights. >> reporter: good morning, and firefighters are certainly still on scene here keeping an eye out on what happened overnight. i'm going to step away so you can get a sense of -- early this morning crews boarding up one of the businesses that was -- [ inaudible ] this was a three alarm fire that spread over multiple buildings and again, needed several firefighters, more than 100, to come out and respond. now here's a look at what the scene was like last night. this is at the intersection of 8th avenue and i have beening when crews arrived around 8:30 last night they said there was a heavy fire scene out of the second floor of the three story apartment complex building. and the damage did spread to a hardware store nearby. now this morning, we're still working to learn just how many people were impacted by this. but we do know no one was hurt. it's still unclear though how many people may have been dis
