shawn chitnis live at the alameda ferry. shawn, what are you seeing there? >> reporter: well, good morning. and it is quite the sight here and also mention that coming flu oakland to get to the location, you could absolutely smell something even inside your car. so lets me step away here and you can get a better sense of what we're talking about. we can see the flames from where we are and the thick smoke that is coming out from that collection of scrap metal there as well as the attempt by the crews that are still on site trying to put that out. now take a look at what we were dealing with yesterday. and what people were noticing last night in oakland. when they say that that distinct smell hit them right away even when indoors and again it's heavy equipment right now as well as last night. that was helping firefighters to get ahold of this huge fire coming from a mountain of scrap metal at snitter steel and this is near the port of oakland. first reports early wednesday afternoon and even people in the evening at jack london square in oakland noticed the s

in 10 minutes shawn chitnis reports . >> reporter: as we take a look at satellite imagery , we are seeingthe storm system bring out the last of its moisture as it moves to the east. that was the leftovers we saw earlier from tropical storm hillary. but now we have high pressure building in and that will dry us up and it will warm us up into the afternoon today. today is one of the hottest days of this week . we are sitting in the 70s along the coast with sunshine around the corner into the afternoon hours. and we will be heating up into the santa clara valley into the 90s today. this will be a warm set up, as we extend into the east bay with upper 90s from antioch into brentwood. we are warming into the 80s today in san francisco. if you thought yesterday was sunny and warm, you are in for a treat today. take it slow this afternoon in the east bay. enjoy the ac you spend so much money on. here is what were looking at for the next 6-10 days. climate prediction center shows normal temperatures. we cool down a little this weekend. but the temperatures are average for the month of august. >>>

our shawn chitnis is out there with a look at how everybody is settling in. >> reporter: move-in day continues at cal state east bay, an exciting time for students and families as they get ready to go into the dorms . here, they are in the process of doing that right now. another day of students looking to find their roommates and get settled in. we know hundred were able to do that on the first day, and many more will join them as this process continues into the weekend. we had a chance to talk to some students who have already moved in, they said they are excited to be part of the campus community and they really wanted the opportunity to live on campus and have roommates and dorms filled with other students like them. we also talked to housing staff who say they have around 1000 students who will join the campus community this year , and spaces are still available for other students who want to have that on-campus housing experience. it is part of a trend showing that more people want to be part of residential life here, but the numbers are still not where they were before the pan

shawn chitnis is live at the alameda ferry. a lot of people are waking up to poor air quality. how is it looking now. >> amanda, that concern for the air quality is coming from the pictures we saw of serious smoke coming from the side of that fire. we are glad to show you now that the fire is looking the best we have seen it all morning. no flames visible at this time. none of that thick dark smoke high in the sky. a little bit of smoldering from what we can tell at this location. this comes more than 12 hours after firefighters started to attack this fire last night. the latest that we are getting from the fire department is that they made some progress and that the debris pile that started the fire has gotten smaller. that was part of the tiling that created so -- challenge yesterday. heavy equipment was needed to move around the debris to get to the starting point. that took time but they were able to get progress done this morning. people in oakland noticed a disstink smell right away. this morning as we caught cut manager here, they described what it was like to smell the

our shawn chitnis caught up with some of the volunteers . >> reporter: a dozen people with the red cross based here in the bay area have already left for hawaii and now more on the way. they will get to maui but know that they need to be flexible and adapt to the changing needs of the situation. both will assist government leaders who are on the ground covering the response of these wildfires. one aspect that is a unique challenge for these veterans at the red cross is the separation of the island but they are prepared for this assignment. >> the red cross is there on somebody's worst day of their life. >> we are trying to take care of those who have lost everything. we've got to stabilize that situation for them and get them in a place that is safe. >> i got married there, in maui. i just had so many family memories . i just want to help them heal. >> michelle tells us she has had a place on maui for 25 years. she does not know its condition after the fire. her friends and lahaina are okay but their homes were destroyed. she is troubled by what many of the locals are facing there. she i

this morning shawn chitnis shows us the aftermath as crews monitor hotspots . >> reporter: we know the seven apartments were damaged, according to the red cross. this was a large response from the san francisco fire department and this morning there crews you are monitoring the situation, as they have boarded up one of the businesses that was impacted by this fire. more than 100 san francisco firefighters were needed to stop this three alarm fire spreading over multiple buildings. here is a look at the scene last night at the intersection of eighth avenue and irving. when crews first arrived around 8:30 in the evening, they said heavy fire was coming from the second floor of a three-story apartment complex. according to the red cross, there are 24 units in the building. no one was hurt. >> this is a great example to be prepared. you never know when a fire will occur. make sure you have working smoke alarms in your home . make sure you have an escape plan. >> reporter: crews contain the fire in about two hours . the red cross was not able to tell us how many people they may have helped

our shawn chitnis has more from the alameda county terminal where many commuters are waking up to ane watched crews try to put out this fire all morning and their response has lasted several hours. it started early in the evening on wednesday and now, finally, it appears the fire is almost completely out. earlier in the morning, we saw flames burning bright as well as thick, dark smoke heading up into the air. the oakland fire department says they were finally able to make progress upon reducing the size of the debris pile where the source of the fire likely started. last night, firefighters needed help with heavy equipment to move around the scrap metal to try to find where the fire started. the response also included multiple fire boats from nearby cities. this morning at the ferry terminal, one family shared with us what it was like to be on a boat yesterday as the fire was just starting. >> we were on the ferry coming back. we were not aware of the fire until an announcement was made that everyone was outside had moved interior seating. by the time we made the one stop in oakland

shawn chitnis was there as the students returned to school at robert simple in benicia. >> reporter: we got to spend the morning with students and staff and the principal wanted to showcase all the great things happening in the start of the school year in large part because of the measure respond program. that funding will allow them to add more teachers and they have plenty of school events already planned. students here go up until the fifth grade and they have 440 students. they were able to add three portables from the middle school for that funding. we got to hear from a parent who has had her student go here since he was three years old. and now he is a fifth grader in his final year at simple elementary. >> today is so bittersweet. because it is our last first day of school. and again, he was this big, now he is an inch taller than i am. and i know. >> i want to showcase we have a dedicated staff and team here. how we look on the outside and the inside and keeping our laser focus on doing right by kids. >> reporter: check out how they made the first day of school extra special

shawn chitnis live at the alameda ferry where many commuters are waking up to the plumes and also the smell, shawn. what do you see? >> reporter: well, as commuters coming by to catch one of the first ferries here, they are certainly taken aback by what they see over my shoulder. some of them did smell it and others have not but as we continue to monitor the conditions here, i will say that it seems as if the flames have gotten smaller. harder to tell though because the smoke is still so thick. and driving through oakland to get to this location, i could certainly smell the smoke inside my car. and that is really the key indication that agency officials want people to think about as they go about their day today. if you can smell the smoke, they say that is enough reason for to you stay indoors and close your doors and windows while we are trying to get through this. we also want to show you a little bit of the scene last night. that's when people were first noticing this in oakland and again, people smelling it right away. even indoors and part of the response that continues today is

shawn chitnis has the details. >> reporter: there is great work happening across oakland to address the issue of a food desert. you can see the amazing boxes that they put together that can either be picked up or delivered. this is one other way that they are getting the food that people need in a food desert as well as helping farmers get products out across this part of the bay area. another way is just as the grocery store close, we are now seeing the impact of a farmers market that once again allows people to get high quality ingredients in walking distance from their homes. >> it is always fun to watch at 10:00 a.m. you see everyone going to the market and it is a great time. >> reporter: between 500 to 700 people come out every sunday . the market match program makes this an affordable option for residents. for vendors, most of whom are people of color, they get a chance to gain more business closer to home. >> i think a lot of positive changes are happening here. >> reporter: now, the market will try to build on that. it is a 60,000 square foot facility opening in the spring of 2

has launched a weekly farmers market where families can stock up on fresh fruits and vegetables shawn chitnis has all the details. >> reporter: there is great work happening across oakland to address the issue of a food desert. we are at mandela produce distribution and you can see these amazing boxes they put together. they can be picked up or delivered. this is one of the way they are getting the food that people need. in a food desert as well as helping farmers get their products out across this part of the bay area. in another way, just as the grocery store closed in this part of oakland, we are seeing the impact of a farmers market that allows people to get high quality ingredients in a walking distance from their home. >> it is fun to watch at 10:00 a.m. you see everyone crawling to the market. and it is a great time. >> reporter: between 500 to 700 people come out each sunday to the west oakland farmers market. the states market match program helps make it an affordable option for some residents . and for vendors, most to our people of color, they get a chance to gain more business clo

that is where shawn chitnis saw the bounce back getting a lift to this family business. >> reporter: they are dealing with issues that are facing the entire city but the businesses who have committed to this neighborhood are starting to enjoy an increase of sales because of a variety of factors. >> we want to make sure that we stay around and keep serving them, that is important to us. >> reporter: they have been in the neighborhood for decades, it was recently named a legacy business in japan town after they prepare to celebrate 50 years in 2024. he is keeping on the tradition started by his grandparents and says he is producing more baked goods including their very popular coffee crunch cake to keep up with the demand. it is older than the shop itself. >> you came back from the restaurant in the early 1900s, your grandmother started a business off of that. >> reporter: they are getting orders ahead of time. after they reopened from the pandemic, a couple of changes only increased orders. >> we saw an uptick in business, which was really nice. very motivating just to know that peopl

so our shawn chitnis is now live from san jose international airport.shawn. >> reporter: hey gianna, good morning. and of course the red cross is going to have a large response for a disaster like this. we know that they have people on the ground there and they have a national response there as well. but part of that response includes volunteers from right here in the bay area. some already on their way and more can'ted to leave later this morning. now what we have been told by the red cross base on the team that's already there, is that you know, they have seen the same pictures that we have and that's what's motivating them to answer this call and get there. some who level this week explained they understand the assignment and they know that once they arrive they have to be willing to do whatever is necessary. some of the volunteers who have been selected or agreed to go on the trip say they have actually been to maui before. so again we're told that there will be another team from the red cross that's set to leave around 9:00 this morning. we're also

shawn chitnis has the latest. >> reporter: people live near the park and come here often sa it is disturbing to learn that the body of a woman was found near the entrance of golden gat park on sunday night. san francisco police are investigating this case as a homicide. they say officers arrived at the intersection of 22nd and delton around 7:30 pm it isn't far from one of the main entrances for outside land which was wrapping up its third night at the park. officers arrived on scene and a witness told them they found the woman who was unresponsive and so the witness called ripley's police officers brought a canopy to th area. you can hear performers o stage while they are on scene. the music was scheduled to past 9:00 sunday. residence we talke to say the discovery calls for more security around the park especially during events like outside lands. it's also why they don't come after dark. >> i avoid that time because i have been here for 20 years an i have seen so many things. a lot of homeless people in the park. >> reporter: the organizers of outside lands put out a short statement not c

shawn chitnis is live at the scene and this is shocking. what do we know ? >> reporter: amanda, police have their work as a try to figure out what happened as people are coming in and out of the park. perhaps they can learn more from those who were here or around the area last night. we have a few details of what exactly happened so far. police say they arrived here around 7:30 last night and they had officers dispatched from the richmond station because once they got on scene they were told by a witness that there was a woman and the witness found her unresponsive and they decided to call 911. this is near the intersection of fulton and 22nd. that is a decent distance away from the entrance where everyone was heading into outside lands earlier in the day but not far from where everything was happening. we can see officers were bringing a canopy and closing out the area. outside lands was just wrapping up at that time on its third and final night at golden date park. you could even hear performers onstage, while officers were working to preserve the scene. t

shawn chitnis is live in the sunset for us this morning where that fire broke out. and shawn, is that scene still active this morning? i think i see some flashing lights. >> reporter: good morning, and firefighters are certainly still on scene here keeping an eye out on what happened overnight. i'm going to step away so you can get a sense of -- early this morning crews boarding up one of the businesses that was -- [ inaudible ] this was a three alarm fire that spread over multiple buildings and again, needed several firefighters, more than 100, to come out and respond. now here's a look at what the scene was like last night. this is at the intersection of 8th avenue and i have beening when crews arrived around 8:30 last night they said there was a heavy fire scene out of the second floor of the three story apartment complex building. and the damage did spread to a hardware store nearby. now this morning, we're still working to learn just how many people were impacted by this. but we do know no one was hurt. it's still unclear though how many people may have been dis
