shawn chitnis is live at the montgomery b.a.r.t.tation in san francisco again, with another perspective and more on the reasons why experts say it is crucial to see b.a.r.t. remain part of the bay area. shawn, great to see you at another b.a.r.t. station. good morning to you. >> reporter: hey nicole, good morning. right, we have been all over the bay area and so today we are here in the city. we know these stations are important like the one here because of course so many people are commuting into the city daily. but also they can serve as hubs for people to get around san francisco. when we're talking about major events and so that's why even with ridership down and the financial challenges that are there, talking to more riders as well as transit experts, they say it is essential that b.a.r.t. survives and they believe it will. an early start to the day at a b.a.r.t. station along the yellow line in the east bay is just part of the routine for some supercommuters in the bay area. >> this is the convenient way for me to go to work.

storm systems and long lines a reality for a lot of travelers shawn chitnis is buckling in this morning be a bumpy ride in the sky or on the ground on one of the busiest travel days of the year? good morning shawn. >> reporter: smooth takeoff for now and been here for a little more than 30 minutes and not too much of line here by tsa. as well as in the check in lines for terminal 3. that's where we're located. but we did see those cars starting to back up just to get into the airport. so we know it's going to be a busy day both tsa and sfo wanting to prepare people for that. and this is coming at a time as we are seeing some trends that indicate that we are getting back to what was the situation before the pandemic with the number of airlines that are here. and the number of passengers that are here. so specifically, sfo tells us that by the end of november, they will have 43 airlines operating out of san francisco and that's in part because of some of those international carriers coming back. and then in terms of the number of passengers, we're looking at 6.3 million travelers between

let's get to shawn chitnis live at the bay bridge toll plaza. shawn, we are hearing some of the lanes just reopened? >> reporter: that's right anne. you can see a few cars able to make it through as they work their way here on the westbound lanes toward san francisco. not a lot of people in line and in position to come this way because we were told this may take quite some time to reopen. and of course so many people glad to see this is now an option for them to get to san francisco but really just to emphasize how serious this was, we are learning from ucsf there were multiple patients, staff, organ transplants delayed because of this closure. they were essentially stuck on that bridge. take a look at what the scene was like. at least 50 people have been arrested and this was quite the scene as it had taken over the bridge right around rush hour. we saw it at 8:00 a.m. at least 15 cars were towed. chp got word of the the issue. took four hours for them to clear. and the situation at the center of that stretch of the bridge between treasure islan

shawn chitnis has reaction from vendors. >> reporter: vendors working together to fight this band say they would like it to happen after the holiday season. but city leaders say it is a chaotic situation in that part of the mission and they have concerns about safety in the area. vendors who are opposed to this band would force them to give up their established place they have in the mission. san francisco supervisor hillary ronen wants them to move to an indoor marketplace that has 50 spots in hopes to secure another location for them with an additional 50 spots the mission vendors association says the sites have limited space and what her business for vendors during a crucial time. the holiday shopping season. while the supervisor told kpix her job is to balance the needs of businesses, residents and city workers with vendors operating legally, the mission vendors association disagrees with her approach. >> there was a lot of suffering on the street and a lot of people battling addiction. there is a lot of items that may or may not be stolen. at the same time, as has been made clear

so shawn chitnis is live at the alameda county community food bank for us this morning with a guest toabout the urgency and the need to help this holiday season. >> reporter: hey gianna, happy giving tuesday. yes, we want to talk about the impressive work that's happening here week after week. joined now by reggie young the executive director so let's start off by first getting people to i appreciate just how serious the need is right now. >> so right about now, about one in four people in alameda county are struggling with some form soft food insecurity. a huge issue right now. >> reporter: and then of course we know that during the pandemic, there was an increase in funding because there was an increase in need. but some of that funding has started to go away. >> that's absolutely right. so during the pandemic, a lot of people were giving funding because they knew it was a big issue. right now the issue is still as high as it was at the height of the pandemic but a lot of the interest in giving right now has gone down. so it's really critical for us to ensure that people know that th

our shawn chitnis has more on the growth of smart. >> reporter: our week long look at b.a.r.t. brings us to the north bay to talk about one part of the bay area that doesn't have access to that transit agency but does have a much younger service that started in 2017, smart. and in that six years they have seen some success even more recently as they add more stations and now see ridership above prepandemic levels in 2019. oakland resident case finds himself on smart whenever he wants to spend time with family in the north bay. >> it's very reliable. it's very smooth and you can easily fall asleep. >> reporter: starting at the larkspur station, this has become a regular outing, even bringing along another relative visiting the bay area on this day. >> i have a cousin that lives up in windsor, and we ride bikes together and see the wine country. >> reporter: when comparing boardings from august of 2019 to august of this year, smart ridership is up 10%. a combination of summer programs as well as fall commuters helped with the recovery. building on the growing interest smart has s

this morning shawn chitnis was outside the public utilities commission building in san francisco with more. >> reporter: the vote happening at cpuc has been delayed two more weeks . the company saying that this rate hike will help with fire prevention measures, specifically burying power lines. but a new group that is rallied at this location has emerged this week saying they want to see more transparency. they are called, fair california, and they are made up of housing advocates, business leaders, labor unions, and environmental groups. they argue that pg&e has been able to push through rate increases without being transparent about how the money is being spent. the cpuc is considering three proposals that range from a 9% to a 26% hike. with the money the company has a goal of eventually burying 10,000 miles of power lines across the state to reduce the risk of wildfires, but as of today only about 300 miles are complete. fair california said the lack of transparency on spending is hurting ratepayers like small businesses. >> the bill goes up for the consumer and they will come in l

shawn chitnis in the castro district with more on the event called gaypec. lgbtq+ party for apec attendees. >> reporter: local leaders say there are some important issues to discuss when it comes to equality for the lgbtq+ community in the asia-pacific region. that is because there is a range of policies queer people among apec countries. they want to have a celebration of the aapi and lgbtq+ identities and their intersection outing by celebrating the history of this neighborhood and also hopefully inspiring more acceptance abroad. the castro has become a destination for visitors decade after decade since becoming an iconic neighborhood in san francisco. not only for its historic role in lgbtq+ rights but the sense of community it continues to offer today. bay area leaders decided it was the perfect place to host a party during the apec summit. >> we are excited to host gaypec. recognizing the intersection alleghney between that of the asian-pacific islander community as well as our strong lgbtq+ community. >> reporter: the south bay assembly member wants to

and we want to talk to shawn chitnis . he is on powell and market street.ntinue today. >> reporter: that is right. we have been watching this particular group for about two hours. they start on powell and market but we are now just south of mission and fifth. working our way south. you see this group of protesters who have made a formation by blocking with their arms. look at what is happening on the other side. if you went down on fifth, you see another line of police and they have helmets and batons and they have kept their distance and protesters have kept a good amount of space in between. it gives you a sense of where things are and what you have to keep in mind. they have been talking about issues and let's listen to what one of them said earlier in the morning. >> [ shouting ] >> reporter: there have been a variety of demonstrations and people have signs to convey different messages but what is significant about where we are if you continue going down this way or if you were to work your way the other direction , east on mission, that is how you get

shawn chitnis is near the moscone center this morning, where one of the security zones closes off to the soma neighborhood. >> reporter: we are at this intersection of howard in third in front of the moscone center where you can see these large barricades that are taking over most size of intersection, as they get ready for the events surrounding apec to ramp up in the next couple of days. the event began officially on saturday and so businesses were expecting to see clouds in the area over the weekend. we are talking to a restaurant and they tell us they had mostly empty tables and chairs. and it felt quite slow. they made the decision to extend their hours because they anticipated that there would be plenty of crowds around apec. now they have gone ahead and canceled all product deliveries for the week because of the closures. they also expect that delivery drivers for doordash and other services will struggle to pick up orders and their employees may have trouble getting to the restaurant itself. city leaders say this is a chance for san francisco to shine under the global spotlig

our shawn chitnis explains it's one way the community can help them keep up with this growing demand.> reporter: it's around the clock operation here at the sf marin food bank and for this part of the day, people can go through aisles like this to get some of the food items they need from members of their community and part of this section is i freezer they want filled with turkeys for the holiday season. they're wrapping up a three-day food drive where they're trying to collect 1,300 frozen turkeys. this is happening at a time where the need is so high food insecurity remains an issue around the bay area and that's why this drive is really just part of a season long effort to make sure that people have the food that they need during the holidays. staff tell us that while that need is just as high as they've seen during the pandemic, the resources that they use to help feed people continue to go down. >> the need in our community is still really high. we're still serving about 50,000 households, which is almost peak pandemic. we've seen declining support from the government, from the

shawn chitnis is live at the alameda county community food bank this morning. and you will have a guest to talk about the urgency that is needed this holiday season. hi shawn. >> reporter: hey gianna, good morning. happy giving tuesday. it is going to be a great day for us to help support our community around the bay area. let's say hello to someone who is joining us here at the alameda county community food bank. that is michael, we want to learn more about what happens here so we're inside the warehouse, michael. tell us what happens here. >> yeah, happy giving tuesday, so we are standing at alameda county community food banks ear warehouse, this is the hub of hunger relief efforts here in alameda county. behind us we have enough food that we're providing 1 million meals a week. one in four residents is experiencing some level of hunger and hunger just remains to be a very profound issue here. >> reporter: right, so give us an appreciation of what it takes to get a million meals out there, what the team is doing at a warehouse like this to get that out. >> yea

. >> shawn chitnis shows us the work that goes into the campaign. >> scouts should open big numbers toreat cause, food for bay area families. they took over the food bank to learn about the important work that comes out of their annual campaign, scouting for food. >> i love how big it is and how many people it can accommodate. >> among the scouts taking a tour of the food bank, 15-year-old dylan chadwick. he gets to see where the nutritious meals go in this warehouse . >> we are putting out flyers and collecting food and sending it to places like this. you really see how it functions in the grand scheme of things. >> the flyers were here on that sunday, weeks before the scouts were sent out all across the bay area. over the weekend, scouts were on their feet, distributing as many as they could, home after home, including in this san francisco area, to help raise awareness. >> as a boy scout, i think it is important because one of the things we live by is we have to help out our community. >> the latest step in an effort that ends with families having food ready for pick up on saturday.

the district reach a tentative agreement last month but, shawn chitnis shows you what the latest deal is as voting begins. >> a lot has happened in just under a month when we were in early october . we were dealing with a vote authorization for a strike but then, a little over a week after that, we learned that both sides had made a deal so that they can move forward in the process and begin with members of the teachers union starting to vote today. the united educators of san francisco represents 6400 teachers, nurses, social workers and other staff numbers in the district. some of the key terms of this deal include a $9000 salary raise for certified educators in their first year and a 5% increase in their second year. other educators will get $30 per hour or an 8% increase with their first year and a 5% increase in their second year. substitute teachers will get a pay raise and the union says they will see improvements in working conditions and or protections for their members as part of the deal. it is a two year term that will be retroactive starting july 1 of this year and contin

shawn chitnis on our morning edition was like yesterday out at fifth and mission and you had ryan yamamoto at the moscone center and even out it would side because the president of china xi jinping was visiting with president biden. so many are using the apec for him to have their voices heard and this is another instance. you can see the upper deck is empty. >> this is looking from a camera we have situated on top of salesforce. we moved it to give you this perspective. no cars can travel on the upper deck of the bay bridge. it is a ghost town. you rarely whatever see something like this at 9:26 on a thursday morning for the commute into san francisco. the cars on the bottom, the lower deck of the bay bridge and it looks like traffic is moving very, very slowly. we have seen intermittent lane closures and eastbound direction for people coming out of san francisco and getting onto the lower deck headed to the east bay. if you are headed through their, that backup is substantial. 101 is affected northbound just getting on to eastbound 80 and they have some on and off ramps closed and that w

shawn chitnis shows us how little help can make a huge difference. >> reporter: families came throughenjoy a proper things giving meal, san mateo house, helping client at a time when demand is up and donations are going down. >> it takes a team of 200 volunteers, along with the staff at samaritan house to make this food distribution a success, this week. >> chicken or turkey? >> reporter: people receive turkeys, chickens, as well as essential food items for the things giving meal. the organization serves 26,000 people in san mateo county. right now, they are seeing a 30% increase in demand for their food program, compared to what they have seen in previous years. >> knowing that , you know, i will be able to nourish my family for the next week or two weeks, sometimes, depending on how we go through it, there's always vegetables, there's always meat and dairy, it is a thankful moment from the get go. >> reporter: they are serving more people now than during the peak of the pandemic , but they are having to stretch their dollars because of the drop in donations. >> we need our community

shawn chitnis is live to see how all of us can help this month. good morning. >> reporter: reed, good morning. they are certainly keeping busy here. they have been working all night. we want to hear more about that so we are joined with sf marin food bank. good morning. tell us about what's happening and why it is so busy even at this early hour. >> we are a 24 hour operation. you see our new warehouse. they're getting ready to receive truck loads of produce, turkeys, chicken, all kinds of important food. in a few hours once the floor is full they'll be sorting it and putting it on the racks. on the other side of the warehouse where you were, they are loading trucks to go to the community. we serve 250 neighborhood food pantries around san francisco and marin. >> including that expansion and improvement is this great freezer. we know we are aiming for 1300. >> over there you see our new freezer. we have doubled our freezer capacity which is great for the turkeys. it allows us to store more fresh food, more chicken, more produce. >> we want to emph

shawn chitnis is live and joining us with more on what riders shared with him about their experience. good morning, shawn. >> reporter: good morning. at the pleasant hill station along the yellow line and recently we had the chance to spend the morning around rush hour and talk to different commuters, some who use bart every day and others who use it because it is the most convenient option that morning. we found one woman who is a recent bart using, recently starting to use bart and shared her experience, so far, so good. alecia is a relatively new bart rider who says it is a better way for her to get to work. >> i take the bart every morning five days a week into the city. i always take this train. it's actually the best train stop in the area. >> reporter: the walnut creek resident rides yellow line to san francisco after driving herself to work felt like a waste of time. >> i didn't want to sit in two hours of traffic every day. >> reporter: she hasn't had issues for the past year when she made the switch. >> it's safe. it's pretty quiet for the most part, no crime so far. >> repo
