so we will continue to see the oil sheen spread not various directions.uld potentially impact this hyper sensitive marine biological area, going forward in the future. so, george asked how does it get done? how does this get cleaned up? well, what they do is they deploy what is called boom behind these specialized boats. this is what it looks like this is the bottom. i'll step out so you can seat image. basically what you're be looking at is a boom that has a one-foot curtain that is dragged fwheeth the surface of the water that can help contain that oil slick. on top of that, they had have what is called a skimmer that actually sucks in the oil that these booms actually help contain. and brings it actually into the boat so it can be safely removed from the water. now, so far, out of the 2,500 barrels that were spilled, they've recovered about 238 barrels. with roughly 42 gallons per barrel, that's equivalent to around 10 is,000 gallons. so we're talking only 10% of this recovered so far. so they've got quite a ways to go. and to put this in further persp

we had oil sheen sightings, oil sheen the very thin layer of oil that drifts to the top part of the oceanpread in all directions. about as thin as -- a layer of paint on a wall. now this is the wind forekacast. generally northeastern flow. helping push the oil sheen in all directions. ocean currents, different title movements as well. helping push that in all directions. take a look at some of this area footage of the oil sheen on the coastline. and you can imagine what kind of effect this has on marine life as well. they say it has killed an undisclosed number of lobsters, kelp, bass, and marine and vertebras. specifically, six brown pelicans, two california sea lions within you see on the screen as we speak. an elephant saeal, being rehabilitated. bans on fishing and shellfish harvesting in the santa barbara county region. they have deployed about 4,500 feet of boons. 18 skimmers en route. and how much they recovered. 10% of the oil has been recovered. out of this particular oil spill. ivan, all the time we have. back to you. >> derek, that is so sad. beautiful coastline terribly pollut

so that helps clean up that oil slick or that oil sheen on the very top surface of the ocean. they've also had three skimmers which is a device that pulls in the oil and draws it into one of the boats sentra fujis and it helps contain that oil and clean it up very, very quickly. we've had about 200,000 barrels spent. at about 42 gallons per barrel, that's about 105 gallons. they've cleaned up about 10% of that so far. noaa has responded to over 100 oil incidents just in 2014 alone. so this is a common occurrence. not every single oil spill, quote/unquote, george, makes news like this. but it doesn't make any of them less important. it's just that this one has become, obviously, very visible along the coast of california and also the smells that we were talking about just a moment ago, as well. >> it is just awful to see what happened there along the coastline. and you bring up a good point, that these things do happen. >> and the effects of the wildlife is very bad. thank you so much. >>> they call themselves white helmets. this is a story you'll definitely want to see. a look

but it was a relatively small oil spill at first but it doesn't take much for that sheen of oil on the very top surface of the ocean to spread out in different directions. waves, winds, ocean currents. that's what we will discuss during particular weather bulletin. just on wednesday when the original oil spill occurred west of santa barbara, covering about 9 1/2 square miles. by thursday, which is yesterday, in terms of the west coast of the united states, mr. are multiple sightings of that oil slick on the top part of the ocean that was spotted by helicopters in various individuals right on the shore. so it is quickly spreading and covering a larger surface area. what are they doing to try and combat this oil spill? they have deployed 4.5 thousand feet of boom. there is a 1 foot curtain that drags just under the surface of the water to help contain that sheen of oil. which by the way at this stage is about as thick as a layer of paint on a wall. there is three skimmers. those are basically oil sucking machines that deposit it back on to the boat and help contain that oil as well. 15 m

now, there are concerns that this oil sheen has spread quite dramatically, wednesday, it was about 9.5les. but there are reports a sighting miles from that original spill, west of santa barbara. this is thanks to ocean currents and wave patterns. around certainly the wind say factor. northeasterly winds at 10 to 15 knots. that will continue to push this oil across the ocean surface. so they've recovered about 10% of those 2,500 barrels of spilled oil. i want to jump across the united states to another situation we're covering actively. working together with the ridge over the east, they're pulling together moisture and creating flash flooding across the oklahoma city region into parts of texas and arkansas. i want to quickly show you some of this video because you can see just how much of a nuisance this is for people there. it is, however, breaking records but also helping to alleviate a long-term drought going on in that region. so some silver lining. george, check this out. this is last year, the drought monitor across oklahoma and texas. this is what it looks like now. alleviated.

this slick of oil or sheen is about four miles wide. you're looking at a live picture from our sister station in los angeles. their chopper is flying over it. this oil spill about 20 miles from downtown santa barbara. oil ruptured from a pipeline and gushed down the bluff to that beach today. within the last few minutes we've learned it's estimated 21,000 gallons of oil that spilled. that's according to the coast guard. you can see the wide berth of that spill around the clear parts of the water. workers discovered the leaking pipeline just before noon today but it took them about four hours to seal it and contain it. we apologize, you can see the signal right there. work is now under way to clean up all the oil which stretches out at least 50 feet from the shoreline. the cleanup crews are securing the oil slick with booms right now and buoys that they use to try to contain it. a company called plains all american pipeline lp owns that pipeline that ruptured. the beach is about, as i mentioned, 20 miles from downtown santa barbara. ther
