. >> joining me now said before reporter shelby talcott. shelby, good morning to you. let's start here with vice president harris last night in las vegas, and she now supports eliminating federal taxes on tips for service and hospitality workers. former president trump posted on social media, combo has no imagination whatsoever as shown by the fact that she played copycat with no taxes on tips what's the significance here that this was? first a policy that trump endorsed and now we're seeing it from vice president harris well, i think it absolutely is notable, particularly because as you just noted it caught the attention of donald trump and donald trump has sort of been frustrated about this shift in running against kamala harris compared to joe biden, but it's also important because it sort of shows the shift in the shifting landscape in this presidential election, we have seen the vice president change some of her viewpoints from back in 2020 and sort of adopt new policies in an attack and to get some of those more nontraditional democratic voters over onto her side

. >> when third-party candidates are included, joining us now to discuss shelby talcott, politics reporter for semaphore and stephen neukam, congressional reporter for axios. good morning to both of you. thanks for starting your friday with us shelby, this wide ranging press conference seemed to be an attempt from trump to get back onto television screens this past week has been dominated by his opponent, kamala harris, his opponents, vice presidential pick and tim walz, even his own vice president, presidential pick, j.d. vance has been in the headlines more than he has. the wall street journal editorial board wrote yesterday about his shall we say, approach. and they write this quote, mr. trump seems to think he's still leading in the polls against a feeble incumbent that over-confidence is what led them to choose mr. vance who hasn't reassured voters who are on the fence. the former president doesn't seem to realize he's now in a close race that requires discipline and a consistent message to prevail. did we see discipline and a consistent message from him yesterday? >> i mean, certainl

we are joined by shelby talcott the politics reporter with semafor, welcome.t prompted the news conference. it was called early thursday morning after former president trump had been largely absent from the campaign trail. guest: twofold. one of the reason is that donald trump likes to be in the news and this has been a new cycle dominated by the vice president so this offered him an opportunity to be front and center in front of the cameras and some of the aides tweeted images of each different network holding the press conference live. the other reason is that the campaign has tried very hard these past few weeks to pressure kamala harris into being more proactive and speaking with the media. she they argue that she has not taken many questions or done any interviews since she became the nominee and so that was part of that was to say we are out here talking to the press and we are doing media interviews, why isn't she? host: what stood out the most out of the news conference? guest: the non-answer on abortion situation happening in florida and how he plans

florida cnn's isaac dovere jasmine wright from notice and semafor's shelby talcott. jazz. i wanna start with you it feels like there has been voters to the trump campaign's point. voters are coming home on some level in hispanic voters in particular were place where biden was having real issues. harris historically has done much better than how real is the momentum right now outside of just democrats saying, okay, we're, we're into this. >> yeah. well, i think if you look at those 12,000, 14,000 person rallies, you would feel that it is real, at least in this moment, a real sense of optimism has overtaken a democratic party that a month ago kinda felt like a funeral i'm real energy to get people to sign up as volunteers, energy to put people's own hard earned money into the campaign. that is what we're seeing these organic organizing calls, these really high fundraising totals i think the question that all of us have is how long it can be sustained, particularly as we know, we are less than 90 days to november and we're starting to see maybe not in the public, the honeymoo

joining us now, politics reporter for "semaphore," shelby talcott, who spoke about the state of the race set the scene for this conversation. what did you learn about the candidate? >> thanks for having me. this was sort of at the end of a very long day of travel. jd vance obviously trailing the vice president, heading to michigan and wisconsin for what were effectively press conferences. he argued throughout the day that the vice president needs to take more questions from the press. he also talked a lot about immigration, crime, the economy, and those sort of are the big things that the trump campaign is trying to focus on when it comes to going after the harris/walz ticket. he also spoke to me about the new running mate. he argued that, you know, this narrative that tim walz is this midwestern guy is not going to hit with voters who are more concerned about -- who are less concerned about style over substance. and that, you know, the overall pro-family vibes that we have heard so much from democrats on walz is also not going to fly. >> shelby, jonathan martin here. now are you? >> goo
