oakland mayor sheng tao submitted her budget proposal in may. so for the past couple of weeks, city council has been using that document for any proposed changes. but late yesterday afternoon, the finance department submitted their amendments to the document, which now means three days before the vote, they have to work off of a new document. and i spoke with oakland city council member carol fife just before the start of the meeting. she says there is, quote, nothing normal about this budget. she says the finance department didn't miss any deadlines. this has just been a long and slow process, but it also means that there may not be enough time for city council to discuss these changes with the finance department. i'm also being told that this new budget includes financial obligations that haven't come due yet, but which have to be included in this new budget. fife says there are serious concerns that layoffs are coming. oakland city council member janani ramachandran says this new budget includes $63 million in cuts that will likely impact pub

when the fbi raided oakland mayor sheng taos home last week. that was just one of 4 locations. the other 3 included callaway solutions which provides recycling services for the city of oakland. >> also, the homes of 2 members of the family which owns and manages that company. it turns out callaway solutions has been under investigation since 2019 for suspected campaign money laundering. court documents obtained from oakland's public ethics commission alleges the laundering scheme spanned several election cycles and involves the use of multiple straw donors making contributions to several candidates controlled committees. political analysts say straw donors are often used when an individual or entity seeks to contribute more money to a candidate than legally allowed, actually find. >> friends, relatives, family members who will write individual checks in their own name. and sent it in. but to be reimbursed. court documents suggest mayor thao is just one of several oakland politicians. >> to receive these contributions from the straw donors, many of whom the ethics commission all
