"the five" is being preempted because we believe there has been a terror attack in new york city. it began at 3:00 eastern daylight time, about two hours ago. we believe it began somewhere around houston street and west street, the northern entrance of the soho neighborhood. a chilly afternoon in new york city but the sun is shining bright. a man is believed to have entered next to the west side highway which is a multiple lane in both directions, major thoroughfare, takes people into the city and out to new jersey. three lanes in each direction, sometimes four lanes. next to that is a popular, well-known, long-established bike path. it's not a path. it's a concrete street but only for bikes. it is separated by a median between the west side highway and the bike path. there is a median in the middle with trees, sometimes just a curb but always a separation. to the right is the highway, to the left is the bike path. we are looking north. a truck got into that bike path and began mowing

." >> shepard: it's noon on the west coast. 3:00 at the white house. we're to put aside politics and partisanship as our nation and leaders come together for an american hero. a vietnam medic hailed for his heroics. let's get to it. >> good monday afternoon to you and yours. a live look at the east room of the white house where that ceremony to honor an american hero is expected to start at any moment. president trump about to award the nation's highest military honor to a former combat medic who repeatedly risked his life to save his fellow soldiers during the vietnam wear. retired captain gary rose spent two decades in the u.s. army. it was his bravery in september of 1970 during a mission that earned him the most recognition. at the time he was sergeant rose. his unit was deep in enemy territory in laos. he repeatedly ran into the line of fire to provide medical treatment to dozens of troops. he used his own body to shield americans from harm. on the final day of the mission, sergeant rose was in a helicopter that crashed. instead of focusing on his

shepard -- that's the video lasts about 30 seconds, shepard. this is described as the perpetrator by the person who took this video. we are told that he appeared to be a heavy set man person who took the video said the gunman had two weapons with him, one appeared to be larger than the other. police are now saying that they were not actually firearms, one of them may have a paint gun or both of them and/or a beebee g gun. this individual was apparently shot by police according to reports. he was not killed. he is now in custody. another witness that we talked to just a few moments ago said he observed an individual two blocks from here on the bike way driving a vehicle, a rented what appeared to be home depot pickup truck. and he said, from what he can tell, it appeared the driver of that car intentionally tried to hit either pedestrians or bikers on the west side bike way here. this is along the west side of manhattan along the hudson riv river. the person i spoke to shepard said there was no doubt this appeared an intentional act. >> you can
