trace: studio with sheppard smith starts right now. sheparde new details of the shooting at the gym in pennsylvania the gunman walked into an aerobics class, turned off the lights, pulled out four guns, fired three of them, more than 50 bullets. in the end, three people were dead and nine others hurt. and then he killed himself. police say the gunman is this man, george sodini. they say he had all four guns and a suicide note with him at the time of the shooting.

shepard: you were friends for 56 years. i know some of the troubling times of his later life had to be at the time when william kennedy smithon trial in palm beach. his poll numbers dropped to around 30%, and it looked like he might lose the election. he was able to pull back from that and do so somehow with a smile on his face. how did he make it through that? >> we made it through a lot of tough times. both of his older brothers were assassinated. he himself was in a plane crash for the pilot and co-pilot were killed, an automobile crash that looked as though not only his passenger died but it looked like it might end his political career. but he said he had faith, he was strong of spirit, as all the kennedys were, and he could see the lighter side of life and had a wonderful laugh at all times. shepard: the kennedy family does not like to talk about themselves as royalty and rejects the idea of a political dynasty for some reason, but there are a number of political dynasties in this country. you could make an argument for bush, atoms, you have to make an argument for the kennedys. is it your sense that this is the end o
