[laughter] professor varon: let me just follow up with that, lincoln and the press, how much did the handling of the press, how big that loom in his leadership? mr. holzer: it is a huge advantage for him that he was so adept at getting republican editors -- and he chiefly dealt with republican editors, and he understood that democratic journals would attack him, north and certainly south, certainly in the north throughout the war. but he reached out to them, he befriended them, rewarded them with patronage jobs along the way. this is not a new thing, but lincoln certainly followed in the tradition. establish from the early days of the century on of making newspapermen diplomats postmasters, port officers, indian agents -- whatever jobs were available to supplement their income and winning their continued loyalty that way. he also gave them what we today would call them scoops. helped them reach their audiences overnight and did not shut down newspapers that were obliging -- remember t

sherman becomes widely denounced. grant is set to replace sherman. instead grant gives sherman the news that he has to take back the offer and demand unconditional surrender. that centrality, not peace but surrender. people thinking about what the implications would be. to understand how we came to this position is necessary to look back and say, what was sherman thinking? he wasn't admirably clear thinker and it gives us a window into alternatives that were available including the alternative not taken of the war ending at appomattox. sherman operated on premises that would have been recognizable but not persuasive. the first that there was a sharp difference between wartime in peacetime widely accepted. the difference was determined by armies in the field and that would not be accepted by the cabinet or the policy of the army. the second was that the united states not only could not but should not conduct a successful occupation in the rural states of the former confederacy. that would be rejected by a government that decided to run an active occup

. >>> let's go to a breaking story, a fast-moving fire broke out on sherman street in one home and spread two to others. there are no reports of injuries. >>> we've got this breaking news, a person is in custody after a high speed pursuit that injured two pennsylvania state troopers, katherine scott is live outside of the police barracks in skippack she picks up the story. >> reporter: the man taken into custody was identified as daniel vazquez 35 years old. the vehicle he was driving was towed here to the pennsylvania state police barracks in skippack after the high-speed chase on 422. let's go to the video of the car the suspect was driving. police say it was stolen. it was all banged up, the tires were shredded. the initial incident that led to the chase is unclear state police were called into assist reading for a stolen car. troopers laid out stop sticks that slowed the car down, but it kept going additional troops positioned their vehicles in front of the suspect's vehicle to stop him that's when the suspect rammed the troopers vehicles. 422 was closed from oaks to limerick lynn fie

the suspect 24-year-old sherman byrd was rushed to the hospital where he later died. police started chasing him after a woman was robbed at gun point. >> a 55-year-old woman was robbed of her cell phone and currency walking on meadow police say byrd took off on a bicycle after robbing the woman and they chased him to the alley where he collided with a police car and they found the gun at the scene. >> byrds family and friends converged on crozer medical center last night and because they caused such chaos the hospital ordered a lockdown and his father and sister came racing up and tried to get into the hospital and then they were stopped and they began assaulting an upland police officer and they are both facing criminal assault charges, police have turned the case over to the district attorney he expects it will be fair and impartial. >> we get the results of that and share the results that is as fair as we can guarantee the process to be at this point. >> reporter: byrd grew up here in chester but was living with his mother in north carolina. he was here visiting hi
