this morning, sherrie johnson is here to break this down and what does this mean? we have new laws in place. we are live in rogers forge, right here, setting the scene, traffic isn't all that bad behind me, off of york road. it's calm. lit pick up during rush hour. this report says for the first three months of 2012, there has been a significant increase in traffic deaths. this is compared to statistics from last year. over 7000 people died in car crashes for the first quarter of this year. that's a 13.5% increase compared to the same period in 2011 when there were over 6000 fatalities. authorities say it's too soon to speculate on what the problem is, or the potential implications. transportation safety officials point out the crash fatality rate for the first first is lower than rates for the other three quarters because of winter weather. the winter of 2012 was unseasonably warm and people the end to drive more when the weather is better. the increase in fatalities follows a downward trend for the past several years. >>> a clee's call for more than a dozen moms

. >> reporter: it's heart -- sherrie johnson has more on the heart breaking story. >> reporter: they were found dead in creek on sunday. folks gathered on the shore and watched as emergency crews recovered the bodies from a nearby creek. an 8-year-old boy and two 12- year-old boys were last seen around 5 p.m. on saturday playing basketball at a nearby church. one mother realized her son was missing when she came home from work at 11 p.m. on saturday. that's when she called police. authorities say the boys appeared to have accidentally drowned. one mother says she doesn't know why her stepson would go into the creek since he was terrified of water. >> i can't believe that because he's afraid of water. it's a tragedy. and they need to do something. they need to do something so this doesn't happen again so no other child has to drown or fall in a quicksand. it doesn't make any sense at all. >> reporter: the offices of the chief medical examiner of baltimore will conduct autopsies many but authorities say they don't believe foul play was factor. sherrie johnson, aby2 news. >>> today we -

and abc2 news sherrie johnson has the latest. you've been you can -- talking to people who were there when the fire started. >> reporter: they are telling me they believe that it started from a kitchen fire. but fire investigators are trying to figure out the exact cause. that's what neighbors that live here say and they say it's all very scary. they just heard smoke detectors going off loud noises and then they all started to run trying to get out of the building as fast as they could. take a look behind me here. this is a building here. we are in randallstown at rockdale gardens apartment off liberty road. fire crews just left the scene a few moments ago. they actually have been out here overnight cleaning up hot spots and removing debris. that call came out about 2:00 this morning here at the apartment complex on yener lane. when crews arrived, they found heavy smoke and the apartment engulfed in flame. it started on the third floor and spread across the roof. fire damaged 12 units and several families have to look for another

sherrie johnson is here with all new information for us. what have you learned? >> i spoke to howard county police and the suspect is on the loose. i talked to the newsing supervisor, the victims have been updated. they found a car belonging to a man at a nail salon. police say 35 year old sam approached the nail and hair care spa on richard valley road. he saw juan waiting for his girlfriend and they started fighting. he went inside the spa and shot his former girlfriend and fled the scene. she had an active protective order. he has been charged with two counts of first degree attempted mud, second degree attempted mud, first degree cond degree assault and reckless endangerment and multiple gun charges. police are offering a $2500 reward for information leading to an arrest. she cher, abc2 news. -- sherrie johnson, abc2 news. >>> idea of putting a casino at the national harbor isn't dead yet. martin o'malley will meet with leaders including the pg&e county executive to talk about the possibility and it could allow table dpaims at the state's -- games at the stat
