ben sherwood the author of the "new york times" best-selling book "survivors club", and he's my guest., hello, ben, you have done a lot of studying, in the area, what is it when it comes to faith, a survivor of a earthquake, or a plane crash, what helps them to pull through. >> in my interviews with survivors all over the world, bill, is that faith is the most powerful and universal of the survival tools. faith is sort of that force multiplier, as the military calls it. it makes weak people strong, and, it gives people incredible power to persevere. you know, when these miners were first found, 52 days ago, the things they asked for immediately, they wanted toothpaste, and they wanted bibles. and those were immediately sent down to them because they quickly set up sort of a makeshift church under ground where they could pray every day. bill: and hold on to that for strength and you talked to the u.s. navy's top survival expert, about this, too. what has he found, that he shares with you? >> the guy who wrote the navy book, on surviving every imaginable crisis says, and this ills is a

ben sherwood explores that in the new book "the survivor's club" joining us from san francisco.re looking at the live pictures and the capsule is now down there, and the miner number 27, franklin lobos is going in there, and he will be brought to the top. the last time it took about ten minutes for this module, this capsule to be brought to the top. we will see how long this takes. but talk to us a little bit about what these miners, once they are safe and sound what they can expect. >> well, i think they the main thing that is what is surprising in the literature of who does well in survival situations and afterwards is that most people do surprisingly well. you would expect that they would be traumatized and they would be have all kinds of depression and anxiety and other symptom, but when you look at the survival stories across the decades, it turns out that most people in traumatic situations like these guys have gone through do well. now this case, it is unusual case, because they have spent 17 days in total isolation out of touch with the rest of the world, but then 52 day

and i immediately was thinking of sherwood. i think both of them should be celebrated in a place like this. but, you know, from very early childhood, i learned, and i talk about it in my recent book, i learned that, you know, we live in the realm of the real. and in that realm, there's very little that we can control. we don't control what country we're born in. we don't control even what name we're given, what language we first speak. but there is that other realm which is the realm of the imagination which you do two things. one, you have control. because you talk about reality, and you read about reality from the perspective other than the one that is, quote unquote, imposed on you. but at the same time i learned my father used to bring me -- make me visit the world first to this imaginary maps. imaginary maps, imaginary guides which were books. i first discovered about iran through my father telling me stories by our great epic poet who, by the way, the year 2010 is his 1,000-year birthday. and what he did, iran was invaded
