in this case shifrin has more from gaza. >> reporter: israeli ground offense remains extremely high in this neighborhood, which is that way. we're still seeing shelling by tanks, by artillery. that's the same neighborhood that israel was shelling so hard yesterday, the same up north, northeast gaza behind my left shoulder. a lot of rockets are fired on there. israel focused a lot of bombardment there. just recently in the last hours or so just to my right, that's the mediterranean western gaza. a lot of israeli strikes there as well. the fighting is intensifying as is the humanitarian crisis. the u.n. says it needs more than $60 million urgently by tomorrow for things like bed, medicine, shelter because there is an exodus here, almost 100,000 gazians have fled nir homes fearful of the israeli bombardment, but many say they have nowhere to go. in northern gaza this morning thousands of families filled this road looking for cover. this is only one mile from israel, and in the middle of the bombardment. this family received a phone call and leaflets dropped from israeli helicopters warnin

nick shifrin reporting from gaza. thank you. for more i'm joined from jerusalem by israeli defense forces spokesman lieutenant colonel peter lerner. great to have you with us. reports out of gaza are that the aleast five people were killed and 60 wounded at the al aqsa hospital in gaza when israeli shells hit nearby. we have pictures of heavy damage from the shelling, and our reporter, nick shifrin, in gaza just told us that the idf has said that anti-tank missiles were stored in the immediate vis isn't of that hospital and that that's what you were targeting. what can you tell us? >> nick's got it right. actually, this situation where hamas, this terrorist organization, places its munitions and offensive capabilities, its rockets in the vis isn't of civilian areas, in the vicinity of internationally recognized secure and safe -- supposed safe sites is a thing that they do. indeed, we are targeting anti-tank missiles that were in a close vicinity in a storage place in the close vicinity of the hospital. it's unfortunate, but thi

nick shifrin joins us live now. it's been a busy and devastating day in gaza. fair to say it's one of the worst days since the conflict started? >> reporter: yeah, absolutely, tony. we have seen a huge bombardment from israel really relentless in the last 24 hours. we were out on this spot all last night watching the flares fly, hearing the drones fly over gaza city, hearing the air strikes from f-16s as well as the strikes from my right. that's the mediterranean sea. you may hear them right now. those are the big booms of israeli gunboats firing into gaza. i have to play one piece of video for you. this is actually just about an hour and a half ago in the spot where i am. let's take a look at what happened about 150 feet behind me. >> reporter: apparently we don't have the video, but it was a strike by a -- by one of those gun ships that hit that field right behind me. you can't see it. it was very close and very loud, tony. it's just one example of what all the people of gaza are going through tonight. the israeli military says they hit hundreds of targets in

nick shifrin from gaza. some perspective now. israel has uncovered 31 hamas smuggling tunnels and has launched more than 3,000 air and naval strikes on target in gaza. the gaza health ministry says israel strikes have killed nearly 800 palestinians, most of them civilians. more than 1500 people have been injured. the united nations says more than 41,000 have been displaced. on israel 35 have died since the fighting began and more than 170 israelis have been injured. most of israel's dead and wounded are soldiers. the israeli army says hamas has fired nearly 2300 rockets into israel since the fighting began. israel's iron dome defense system has intercepted more than 400 rockets heading towards populated area. the crisis is leading to violent confrontations between left and right wing protesters in israel. activists are increasingly seen as traitors. as we report from jerusalem now, they say it is becoming more dangerous to speak out. >> reporter: she's an israeli student activist no changer to pro-palestinian anti-war protests. i

nick shifrin is live in gaza right now. nick, give us a sense what things are like on the ground. >> reporter: morgan, as you can see from the live photos, people are coming out for the first time in more than a week when we had the last brief humanitarian cease-fire. people are stocking up on things they haven't been able to buy. food, groceries, basic necessities, and in some cases buying gifts for the holiday that ends the holy month of ramadan in the next couple of days. go just a couple of blocks from there and go to the areas that israeli shelling has really targeted, and you see these scenes of destruction and chaos and in some cases apocalyptic. you walk through neighborhoods, and you can smell it. it really smells of blood has stained the streets. you walk through them and come across utter destruction. many, many families walking to their homes for the first time realized their homes were destroyed. we were at one this morning in which the father was picking through the rubble trying to find cash, trying to find j

nick shifrin is live with the latest. bring us up to speed on the current situation on the ground. >> reporter: tony, in the end today there were some 80 air strikes, more than 40 rockets fired from gaza. the diplomacy is intense, and z as james just said it failed and at that has meant a real vacuum here so that the violence can continue, the fighting can continue, and both sides can actually continue to really throw everything they have at each other. for israel's point of view, they continue to go after two things as we talked about so often. the tunnels that go from gaza into israel and the rocket and the rocket launchers. specifically two neighbors, one in the north about three miles that way and one in the east two miles that way. tony, we have heard and seen tank shelling, artillery shelling air strikes all day in the neighborhoods. right now i hear a drone above me, and as i said, those rockets being fired by palestinian fighters into israel definitely continues all day. >> nick, i'm going to run this by you. i do

nick shifrin reports. >> reporter: this morning the anger is still smoldering. in a few hours this community wilbury a 17-year-old it says was killed to avenge the murders of three israeli teenagers. the tension hangs in the air here. outside nothing has been cleaned up, and inside a mother surrounded by her family says there's a hole inside of her. i feel, she says, like my heart's been ripped out. the family lives here in east jerusalem. this is their house right there. they say that mohammed was taken right next to their house right in front of these shops, and when the news spread of his death, this neighborhood exploded. this is a garbage dumpster that his neighbors use, the palestinian protesters used to fight israeli police yesterday. the two sides fought for more than 12 hours. today's violence has two fronts. in southern israel on the gaza border, palestinian rockets are beginning to find their targets. last night and this morning, two rockets slammed into this neighborhood, apartments hit directly but no injuries. three kilometers away is gaza. every n
