shimon prokupecz here with the latest. we heard from the mayor your interview there with him.information. he said that the police it appears encountered the shooter and pulled him over. and then he shot one of the police. there was a chase ensued. somewhere along the chase as the suspect was running there were more people shot. and that's perhaps when he was firing at these vehicles and where people were shot and injured. 21 people injured. a lot of people in the panic as you would imagine running, trying to flee the scene of gunshots. they get injured. two officers injured. one is now in surgery. but the good news they are expected to survive. they are non-life threatening injuries. but a lot of panic out there for folks out today driving on the road. and then the people in and around the entertainment center there. >> this ending at an entertainment center, the mayor described a theater complex where officials engaged with this suspect and ultimately the suspect this active shooter they called him is dead. right now we don't kn >>> other victims after that. the victim then w

shimon, new details tonight about the gunman in dayton are coming out about his twitter feed. what do you know? >> yeah, this is interesting, don. we've been going through his twitter feed and should assume that law enforcement has as well. he doesn't write much on his twitter feed. there are some selfies of himself, but he did spend a lot of time reviewing other tweets, retweeting folks, liking tweets, specifically, more of the left wing and anti-law enforcement, anti-police-type tweets. some of the tweets that he retweeted, it was about support for bernie sanders and elizabeth warren. there's a tweet at he retweeted where it says millennials have a message for the joe biden generation, hurry up and die. he did on the day of the el paso shooting, he did like several tweets about that shooting. he also liked posts and tweets expressing hate toward i.c.e. agents so you're seeing someone that's just not really clear here in terms of what could have possibly still motivated him in the shooting, the dayton shooting and certainly something for law enforcement that hay are consideri

cnn's shimon prokupecz joins me live. shimon, there are new details about the suspect and about this online posting. >> reporter: yes, significant here because the police have now said they are investigating this manifesto, this posting that he made on we're going to report some details concerning what was contained in that manifesto. the police saying they are investigating this as a possible hate crime because of some of these postings. essentially it was a four-page document that he -- that officials below and are investigating that he wrote. and what it essentially says is that he feared an influential hispanic population in texas would make the state a democratic stronghold. he wrote that the republican party is also terrible because the republican party is pro corporations, which can lead to more immigration. then it goes on to say that his thoughts, his feelings about immigration, about hispanics predate president trump and that he held these beliefs for years. now, he's only 21 years old, now facing the death pena

i heard shimon say they were bike force officers. many of them are on bicycles frequently. right now you have everybody there. the fbi is probably responding. i know atf is there. my son is an atf agent in the philadelphia field office and he's on the scene spoifl to him. he's fine. so there will be overwhelming response. you can almost have too many people there. they have to cheer it out. so we can keep people back away from the scene. they get ambulances in and out. right now there is someone taking care of that as well. so you have a lot of moving parts and the two hospitals where people are gathering. >> so give us some perspective on how extraordinary this is in philadelphia. you were the police commissioner there. give us some perspective on the nature of this attack. >> it is extraordinary. six cops shot. in my definition of mass shooting, that would probably fit right in there. i was picks police commissioner for eight years. five shot to death. they have in auto related crashes bombeding to scenes. it's terrible. this department has gone through an awful lot. than

cnn shimon prokupecz has been reporting on this really from the very beginning. joins us now with all the details. so, shimon, what exactly did the i.g. determine comey did wrong here? >> reporter: violated policy. that is, you don't circumvent the process, you don't go around the department of justice. you don't go around the fbi, and then on your own, unilaterally decide, okay, i'm going to release information because i want to see something done in this investigation. and that is that -- we know that comey wanted a special counsel appointed in this case, and so he has said so himself, that he put this out there, he leaked some of this information out there through his lawyer to try and get a special counsel appointed. and the two key things here, as you said, john, was that for comey, look, he did violate policy. i think he is fully aware that he did that. the thing, though, most important for him is that the inspector general here found he did not leak classified information. he didn't give any information to the media that is classified. so he did get someth

. >> let's bring in cnn's shimon prokupecz following the breaking news for us. i know you're speaking to your sources and you have a lot of sources in el paso and elsewhere and federal authorities are involved and the fbi, the dea, atf and local authorities. what are you hearing? >> the fbi is there, the atf and now at this point right now the locals are managing all of this and the local police and the el paso police and there is a chance the fbi is there that they can come in and take the lead on this investigation and so that would significantly ramp up the entire investigation and certainly it would ramp up, there could be some cause for the fbi -- >> what would the cause be for the fbi to take over responsibility? >> any kind of terrorism with links to overseas terrorism, right? not necessarily domestic terrorism, but the other thing here is any kind of hate crime. was this some kind of hate crime and then the fbi would certainly, in consultation with the department of justice, they would come in and take the lead on something like this. right now we've see

>> well, first of all, let me say that i agree with shimon.mpressed with how quickly dayton got information out. it does reduce a lot of speculation. you know, it's not uncommon for something like this to have an individual who doesn't have a criminal background with felonies that would have prevented them from being able to legally purchase a gun. universal background checks are something that are needed, but it doesn't mean it's fool-proof that it's going to absolutely stop everything because it's not. but the fact he could have a weapon like that. the fact he could have these high capacity magazines, i mean, we don't know what his motive was. he killed his sister. whether it has a domestic component to it or not, we just don't know the answer to any of that. but he was armed in a way where he wasn't there to kill one person. he was there to do as much damage as he possibly could. thank god, because that's an entertainment district. they had an extra detail of police officers down there. a lot of cities do. especially at the time bars clothe

shimon prokupecz is following the details. i know you are working your sources. what is the latest? >> reporter: to give you an idea of what is going on here, it is a very active situation, so law enforcement is still trying to figure out exactly what they are dealing with. they do have one person in custody. and as you've said, they are dealing with what they believe will be a high number of injuries. there are multiple deaths. but they are still trying to sort out exactly what happened here. they are also dealing with multiple scenes, multiple locations. it is a mall, so thousands of people inside this mall. there is a location which is a walmart, also dealing with that scene. and they are still trying to secure the scene so that they know exactly everything that they are dealing with. and also just really trying to make sure that there are no other threats. and that seems to be the concern. and as police have said, we have not-46 sense we've been on air reporting this, we have not heard any gunfire, any new gunfire. so that seems at leastoff for now because police believe that th

shimon, what are authorities saying this hour?reporter: well, certainly they're mystified, i can tell you that much. authorities in new york who have been investigating him for quite some time now just don't understand how something like this could happen and that's why we're seeing this response from the attorney general and the department of justice launching this investigation because something like this in a facility like the one he was housed in lower manhattan at the mcc district simply should not have happened, and what we know, as you said, an a wa, was that was on suicide watch after the 23rd incident and we don't know what happened there because the bureau of prisons hasn't released that information. it was after that he was placed on suicide watch and a week or so after that, at the end of the month and prison officials and psychologists who had been assessing him on a daily basis and they were interviewing him and talking to him on a daily basis and then after that for whatever reason, they decided to take him off suic

. >> joey jackson and shimon perez. shimon, first to you. before we get into what de blasio could or could not have done, will this officer be fired? >> i think it's highly expected he will get fired. most folks that i've been talking to don't see how the police commissioner wouldn't recommend it. anything can happen. the union, the lawyers for the police officer obviously are going to fight like hell to make sure he doesn't get fired. they've already done that. they're going to make their final appeal to the police commissioner eventually and then he's going to have to make the decision. it's interesting the nypd judge, she had a specific part of the video where the officer puts his arm around garner but then he collapsed into like a choke hold and that's where he violated the procedures and protocols of the nypd. it's not so much in the beginning -- >> it was that moment for her. >> it was that moment that brought her to her thinking. >> all along the new york mayor said, no, i'm precluded to acting by the department of justice. he reitera

joining us is cnn crime & justice correspondent shimon prokupecz.> coming from the police, the press conference, and what our good cnn team put together, we saw this start at 4:17 eastern time. police trying to pull over this individual in a honda, something happens during that situation. the car stops and police are shot. the officer was shot by the driver. then of course the rampage that we now have learned about where five people are dead, 21 are injured, 14 hospitalized. we've learned the shooter goes on this ram page, eventually he is stopped. according to information that i was looking at, it may have been an hour, hour and a half, after this all started, that police were finally able to intercept him. there was a shootout and police say he was killed by them. obviously at the scene they say the synergy, it's a movie complex and entertainment center in odessa, where they located him. he was driving a stolen mail truck. they say he hijacked it. so a postal employee that was driving it, unclear how they were forced out of that vehicle, but that

i want to go straight to new york and cnn crime and justice reporter shimon prokupecz. break this down for us, shimon. >> reporter: brianna, this is a decision that was weak weeks in the waiting and comes amid a lot of implications for policing and for mayor de blasio who is running for president after he took the national stage during a cnn debate and said that the family would finally get justice after the department of justice decided against bringing charges against the officer that was involved on this. and of course the mayor here wanting this officer to be fired. now today a visibly emotional police commissioner at times talking, explaining his decision. said it was a hard decision to make. said he was confident in his decision. in his decision was based on the fact that the officer acted reckless. but of course understanding the implications that this has on the men and women of the nypd, the police commissioner said this was not an easy decision to make. and here is what he said. >> trials commissioner ruled that officer's use of a prohibitsing chokehold was re

let me get over right now to shimon. he's got the very latest on this.himon, what are you hearing? >> this is big news here certainly for the garner family. this is something that they've been waiting to hear for really five years when you think about it. and word now, we're told by officials is that the nypd judge who oversaw the internal hearing for the police officer, daniel pantaleo after a six-day trial, has recommended that he be terminated, that the police commissioner fire daniel pantaleo, and that is really the next step here. what will the police commissioner do? will he fire the officer after these recommendations from the nypd department? the judge is a deputy commissioner, and she oversaw the six-day trial. heard testimony, saw evidence, and now has recommended that the officer be terminated, be fired from the police department. it is up to the police commissioner now and that is very important for folks to understand, what the ultimate outcome is. and from what i'm told is that the nypd commissioner is expected to follow her recommendations

and cnn's crime and justice reporter shimon prokupecz. have you learned more about why he was taken off suicide watch. >> we have no word as to why that happened. that's obviously the biggest question right now. what happened from the time that he was found with injuries on july 23rd to just a week, it appears, he would be on suicide watch, where the psychologist and the officials at this manhattan jail -- federal facility, monitoring him, assessing him on a daily basis. something changed. all of a sudden the officials decided to take him off -- off the suicide watch and now put him back into the unit in before. a unit segregated from the general population because of the notoriety he gets from the case, the nature of the charges, the significance of the charges, the jail went out of their way to try and protect him. so the question now is what happened, and how is it he was able to do this overnight, early into the morning when officials found him unconscious inside the jail cell? we still don't know the entire circumstance of how it unf

prokupecz. >> shimon, you're working your sources for us. what else can you tell us? >> police are saying this happened after 10:00 a.m. at el paso time, early, the shooter and it's believed he walked in from the walmart and there are witnesses who say they saw the shooter leave and there was a walmart that one person described as maybe 200 yards from this mall. he left that walmart. there was a shooting inside the walmart and then he walked across into the mall where there was more gun fire according to the police, and as you said, wolf, police are saying they're sticking to the words of multiple dead. they're not saying exactly how many people have been killed. we know as you said, more than 20 people have been injured. the shooter, they believe, is only one person right now responsible for this. they have questioned other people. there were initial reports that there may be other shooters, but police right now believe that there was only one shooter and that person, they believe they have him in custody. they also say that they have witne

shimon prokupecz joins us outside the court house in new york.us what you're hearing or what you've heard from inside the courtroom. >> reporter: yeah, really powerful moments really, phil, inside this courtroom behind me. several of the victims have come forward, they have spoken to the judge. they're angry. they're angry at how this case has essentially ended in that jeffrey epstein, because of irregularities at the jail, because of people not doing their job, was able to take his own life and essentially avoid prosecution. one of the victims called him a coward. many of them crying when to the. one of the victims telling the judge i feel very angry and sad. justice has never been served in this case. then she called jeffrey epstein a coward. then another victim really a powerful moment here crying as she described how jeffrey epstein raped her on her private island while she said to him no, stop. and then she described how she ran from the property to her villa and while she was running, she hurt her feet. she came to her villa and she was blo

shimon prokupecz is with me here. josh, let me start with you, and what you're learning about the suspected shooter there. he is in custody. is he talking to investigators? >> yeah. we're waiting to hear, swrajaker a readout on that interview. when a subject is either engaged by law enforcement, killed or turns the weapon on themselves, this is an instance where the subject was taken into custody without incident. we're told yesterday that law enforcement officers were attempting to do that interview. we haven't received a readout as far as what he's telling officers. if he's proud of what he did here, again, this investigation is continuing, regarding this possible manifesto, that might be tied to him. he may very well admit to officers what he did. we're just waiting for those details from our sources, jake. >> shimon, i want to ask you about the shooting in date yton. we seem to have a clear idea, at least if you believe that this screed written, that it was his, hate crime, motivated by bigotry and hatred of latin

let's start there, shimon, since you're resident expert here at cnn on all things fbi.do you think the reason is that the fbi isn't going after comey in a -- charging him? >> it was ultimately up to the department of justice. the inspector general here made their finds, made their referral to the department of justice. ultimately when the department of justice looked at everything, they said there's not enough here to bring any kind of charges against the former fbi director. i think one of the key things here is that, yes, he violated policy, the fbi's policy on releasing sensitive information, internal information, that's very clear. but it's not so clear on the classified aspects of it. in fact it appears from the inspector general's report that he didn't release any classified information to the media, and those memos were classified after the fact. so what happened is after comey writes these memos, these memos get out there, the fbi then takes a look at these memos and said there's a couple of words here, a couple of things that should be classified on the lowest

shim shimon prokupecz. we are told the suspect the 21-year-old white male is being interviewed by authorities. >> i think that's important and significant piece of detail we are getting from the attorney general. it would seem by the words that the suspect here is cooperating with investigators. they're going to be able to learn quite a lot of information if he is in fact answering questions about motive, about when he decided to do this. how did he arrive to the scene? we know there was a car. he -- it would appear he surrendered without incident. that is going to be significant because in a lot of the types of shooting, wolf, as you know, the shooters don't vendor they are taking their own life or taken taken down by police. they have a lot of other information. there are the online writings that they believe is linked to him and can speak to motive. they are poring through that. perhaps they are sitting with him going through what he wrote there going through his thinking. they seem to have been making p

shimon prokupecz is with us in new york. shimon, the attorney general voicing his outrage but what more do we know about what went wrong and what happens next in this case? >> reporter: well, we know a lot that apparently based on our reporting went wrong in this facility while jeffrey epstein was there. it's very clear that based on what we now know that the guards were not doing what they were supposed to be doing. so let's look at that. first of all, according to our reporting, the guards were supposed to check on jeffrey epstein every 30 minutes. it appears that that did not take place in this case. the other thing that we've learned is that jeffrey epstein, because of his previous suicide attempt, he was not supposed to be in the jail cell alone. he was supposed to be there with another inmate. and for whatever reason, the jail had him alone in this cell. so these are two big irregularities, i suppose, concerning the attorney general and concerning what he said this morning. we don't know what else perhaps the attorney

our crime and justice reporter shimon prokupecz is also working his sources. what are you learning?reporter: it is an active situation. and you could see there are dozens of police officers on scene. the philadelphia police department is holding back units. they're actually asking for more s.w.a.t. units to come in and at one point the situation was so dangerous that they were using heavily-armed kind of armored vehicles to push police cars out of the way so they could get in front of the building and have the right amount of cover. officers from our understanding are also inside of the building, inside of the house where this apparently happened. so some officers may be trapped even inside and at one point the police there thought there could be as many as two shooters. that is not entirely clear. but this does seem to stem some from kind of narcotics and unclear if police are in the building doing a buy and bust type of situation or a search warrant they were executing and then fired upon. but it does appear to be right now that a lot of the officers were ambushed, that this shoot

shimon prokupecz is with us. we only have skeleton information. coming from the mayor's office that there are fatalities. we know that there are suspectsle suspects in custody. two shopping malls were impacted even though there was an active shooter at one of the malls, cielo vista. know, border patrol and el paso police. what are your sources telling? >> a lot of resources now heading in to the area to assist the el paso police. this is what always happens in these situations. a couple points to make. significant here that the mayor's office has already confirmed that they have some suspects in custody. i think it is important for viewers to keep in mind that there are always initial reports, the initial reports always say there are multiple shooters. there could be other people on that -- in that mall who were carrying weapons. because they can carry weapons there in that state. and so that could be cause smfgt confusion. >> and i want to interrupt you, let's listen into the officer. >> currently is searching the area so stay away. if you have l

to get the latest on that, let's go to my colleague, shimon broke possession, in washington. what did you learn? >> reporter: significant new information. as bad as this was, victor, with the nine dead, this could have been for worse. there were thousands in the area. there's bars, restaurants. thousands of people in this area at the time of the shooting. what we learned is that the shooter, he came with a lot of fire power, a long gun, possibly an assault rifle. we have heard a lot about ar-style weapons. it's possible that in this incident, though the police will not say exactly what kind of weapon was used, but it is similar it seems to what we have seen in other shootings. there were high-capacity magazines. he had ammunition, lots of ammunition. so it is believed he was prepared to take out a lot of people. he wore body armor. the police were able to get to the scene and engage the shooter in just a minute, saving perhaps lots and lots of lives. here's the mayor describing all of that just moments ago. >> time and again, i, as mayor, have been amazed by dayton first resp

let's turn to shimon prokupecz. tell me about what's unfolding right now. >> the first step in this process of daniel pantaleo never wearing a police uniform ever again, him being fired, terminated from the job, we are in the first step of this process. the nypd police commissioner has been awaiting the recommendations from this nypd judge, internal proceedings that went on for about six days. evidence was presented and the judge today recommending -- these recommendations are for the police commissioner ultimately -- that he fire daniel pantaleo. it's widely expected that the police commissioner will follow this recommendation. however, there's always a chance that daniel pantaleo's attorneys could make an argument -- they will have an opportunity to make an argument to follow up to appeal to the police commissioner that he should not fire daniel pantaleo. we think that decision w come within the next two weeks. that's still unclear. but there is some time before we get final word from the police commissioner on wh

shimon prokupecz, thank you for that. epstein apparently killed himself less than 24 hours after thousands of pages of revealing documents were unsealed in the case from an epstein accuser over epstein's former associates. the defamation suit was filed by virginia dufree who said she was under aged when epstein allegedly kept her as a sex slave for years, flying her around the world, she alleges to have sex with powerful men and among the men she claimed she was trafficked to have sex with was britain's prince andrew in 2001. a buckingham palace spokesperson denies her claim saying in response, this relates to proceedings in the united states to which the duke of york is not a party. any suggestion of impropriety with underaged minors is categorically untrue. she was instructed to have sex with former new mexico governor bill richardson, a spokeswoman calling the allegation completely false and saying, quote, to be clear in governor richardson's limited interactions with mr. epstein, he never saw him in the presence of yo

shimon is live from outside the courtroom. what is happening there now?> reporter: the victims actually have begun to speak, victor. by our last count, there probably are about 30 victims inside the courtroom. some of them will not speak, but certainly many more in the courtroom than will speak. we've already heard from one victim, courtney wild. she has been central in this case. she's been outspoken and out there talking to the miami herald back in 2018. she was also one of the victims who sued the department of justice over the first deal, the secret deal which she called a secret deal that she gave to jeffrey epstein. here's some of what she said, fighting back tears, she said that she feels very angry and sad and that she says justice has never been served in this case. and she called epstein a coward, of course jeffrey epstein killed himself inside the federal jail here where he was being held, and so now a lot of these victims, the judge giving them the opportunity, the opportunity that the judge says she did not have previously, to come into court

shimon, what are we learning about the federal government response to the spate of mass shootings. there's a new directive at the fbi. >> reporter: there is. i want to point out the fbi just pointing out a statement just moments ago from the fbi director. it says that the fbi remains concerned that u.s.-based domestic violent extremists could become inspired by these and previous high-profile attacks to engage in similar acts of violence. the fbi goes on to say that they're asking for the public's help, that if you see anything suspicious to report it. what they're doing is saying that both these incidents, the one in dayton, ohio, and obviously the one in el paso, there is now concern that there could be copy cats, that someone could be inspired by these attacks. they're urging the public, if you see something -- as we always say, if you see something, say something. the fbi putting out that statement, don. they're working with local authorities there in dayton and el paso, and they're providing all sorts of resources, one of those being that they're providing extra agents, agents

let's start this hour with shimon prokupecz with the latest in washington. >> so that shooting, nine dead as you said, happening just about around 1:00 a.m. police say when the gunman walked into this bar, to this club, and opened fire killing those nine people, 16 injured. and what we're told by police is that this individual was wearing a body armor. he had what they have described as a long gun. obviously a lot of panic inside this bar, a lot of people again running for their lives, hiding, trying to find a way to survive. and here is what some people, some of the witnesses, people who were inside who were out just for a fun night, here is what they had to say about what they saw. >> you guys were here for girls night. you have an interesting story. you saw a young woman that you spoke to in one of the clubs that you were in and describe the next time you saw her. >> she was laying on the concrete dead outside of the club that we was at. >> what did you guys say to each other? >> we told each other that we liked each other's youtfits and we thought each other was cute. >> and tiff

i want to talk about this now with cnn crime and justice reporter shimon prokupecz. you've gone through this report. tell us about it. >> the headlines really, it's critical of the former fbi director, the inspector general taking issue obviously with what comey did here in leaking some of this information to the media, to "the new york times," how he handled some of the memos. the key thing here, what they say, is that, yes, this did volate fbi policy and violated his employee agreement. he wasn't supposed to release this information. and then the other key thing for comey in all of this is that the inspector general found that no classified information was leaked, so that is helpful, obviously, to the former fbi director. and here's -- one of the key lines that i found in this report certainly is how they address why the former fbi director did this. here's what the inspector general says, that by not safeguarding sensitive information obtained during the course of his fbi employment and by using it to create public pressure for official action, comey set a dangero

also shimon prokupecz. shimon, let's talk about motive right now.ritings, what do we know about this shooter in el paso? >> that's what we really know, there are writings. in terms of the el paso shooter, there is the manifest, of course. and because of that, they believe, that's why officials there have said we have enough evidence to say at least at this point we're investigating this as a hate crime. and so as a result of that, they have gone through these writings. they believe that they are linked to him. obviously these writings, when you see them and read through them, there's just no other way to explain it but that it's just hate. it's full of hate. >> that's the shooter in el paso. >> in el paso. >> what about the shooter in dayton? >> dayton is interesting. they also have writings in there. when authorities went to do the sev search warrant at his home, they did find writings. what they're explaining to us is that these writings are -- he talks about violence, wanting to kill people, but there are no indications of any kind of political l

cnn crime and justice report shimon prokupecz covered the hearing for us. what did these women say?er: it was certainly very emotional and powerful at times, wolf, to have these women come in one by one, stand up in court and tell their story. a story that they feel they have not been able to tell, and now certainly we're not going to be able to tell until a judge here in new york city decided to allow these victims to come in and say what happened to them. at times, these women were emotional, crying, but as you said, there was also an overall theme here that they were angry. some of these women calling jeffrey epstein a coward, saying he took the easy way out by killing himself, not facing justice and they were just happy to have the opportunity to come to court and tell their side. another one of the victims, and one of the most powerful moments described how she ran from the home of jeffrey epstein, on that private island that he owns to a villa, a villa that she was being housed at by jeffrey epstein, and she described how she was bleeding, her feet were bleeding as she was run

shimon prokupez is the one breaking this story. talk to me about these subpoenas?gnificant move here by federal investigators. how did jeffrey epstein wind up dead inside his jail sell. everyone knows now from the medical examiner and believes this was a suicide. but what led up to this, and that is what federal investigators have tried to find out. they is a peened in a two guards in trying to get to the bottom of what happened here, one of the things that i think this reveals is that many of the guards have not been cooperating with the fbi, with federal investigators as they started this investigation. and so as a result federal investigators felt the need and it being necessary to subpoena these folks, just so they can get answers as to what led up to his death. one of the things they're looking at is what kind of irregularities have we heard. they want to get a better idea, they're looking at things like paperwork, records, indicating that prison guards were checking in as they were supposed to every 30 minutes on epstein, on jeffrey epstein, were they doing i

joining me is shimone pro copez. what is the new threat system involving?> after the three shootings we've seen in the last week, don, the fbi director has told his staff that he wants them to go out into the field and do another assessment, a new threat assessment to see if there are any threats that they're missing. see if there's anyone they need to keep an eye on, anything they need to be doing they're not doing to keep this country safe. we see the fbi do this cases involving international terrorism. regular stuff that we call just international terrorism, people are linked to extremist groups. they are now doing this in this case. the fbi director told field agents let's go out and look at other cases. perhaps there's something we are missing. we need to take a look at this. he stood up a command center and wants them looking for any threats that they're missing, don. >> shimone pro copez, thank you. we're still larrying about the victims of the shootings. we'll speak with the aunt and uncle of a young mother who died saving the life of her 2-month-ol

shimon prokupecz is our justice recorder. ed gavin is the former deputy warden for the new york city department of corrections. the a.g. said there will be accountability. where are we now in the investigation and what are the next steps? >> i think they're moving very aggressively. those were some strong words there from the attorney general. obviously everyone very concerned about what happened there. the highest profile possibly for a suspect, for someone being housed in a jail, in a facility where technically he should be safe, to have this happen is definitely something that is concerning and for investigators, everyone is really angry. when you think about the irregularities here, it's all on the guards. that's what we're being told, the guards were supposed to monitor him and check on him every 30 minutes because of where he was housed in the special unit. there's question of why was he alone in this jail cell? because he just came off of suicide watch, he should have been in a cell with someone. why was he taken off o

let's bring in shimon prokupecz. he was placed on suicide watch, any sense of what changed? >> yeah, those are the big questions now, anna, what changed. we know when he was placed on suicide watch after that july 23rd incident, what happened was that prison officials decided he needed to have psychological assessments on a daily basis. and that went on for about a week or so. those assessments went on, at the prison, psychologists were talking to him, were dealing with him, were assessing him on a daily basis. and then at some point, the psychologist at the jail decided that he was clear, he was okay to be placed back into this special housing unit of the jail there in lower manhattan, the federal jail, and they decided you know what, we're going to put him back in the special housing unit. and this is where officials this morning found him unconscious. it was around 6:30 a.m. when they were doing a sweep of the jail. they found him unreresponsive. he was removed to the medical unit and an ambulance was called and he was taken to the hospital where he died. we don't yet kno

cnn's shimon prokupecz has been following the story since the beginning.ple? >> they want records. they want to know what the prison guards there knew leading up to the death of jeffrey epstein. it's not so much the circumstances of or the manner of his death. it's more about recordkeeping. more about were the guards doing what they were supposed to do? remember the attorney general has said publicly several times there were irregularities at the jail and that is what they are investigating. guards were supposed to watch jeffrey epstein. he was supposed to be checked in every 30 minutes. there were indications some of the guards were falsifying records. claiming they had been checking on jeffrey epstein when in fact they weren't. so that's part of the investigation. the other issue we've heard time and time again from officials is that a lot of the guards and staff at the jail have either lawyered up or have not been cooperating in the investigation, so that when the fbi agents went to them and said, hey, we want to know what's going on here, a lot of them

shimon, on a separate case, but potentially also very significant just a little while ago, a lawyer representingar sigh ed sentenced to sending pipe bombs to democrats and including to the cnn bureau in new york, the headquarters in atlanta. the lawyer for him said, and i'm quoting him now, that they believe that the president's rhetoric contributed to his actions. how significant is that? >> look, when this first started happening, and the investigators started looking at this, they were very concerned. because of the rhetoric. and they were concerned about his almost fascination with the president, with trump. he had all sorts of material, if you remember when he was arrested, on his van. he was arrested -- he had a van. so had trump decals and stickers. so they have always been very concerned that perhaps this man was somehow just extremely -- listening to what the president was saying that was kind of perhaps maybe in some ways some thinks that was there something the president said that inspired this -- of course cesar sayoc asked for letters of leniency from the judge but for people from t
