let's go to shimon prokupecz, tell us about the situation there in new york. >> that's the thing. that's the critical thing. they need equipment or supplies. all the protective gear that you can think of that nurses and doctors would need in situations like this. he's asking for help in getting some of that. the other aspect is ventilators. we keep on hearing the governor stressed that they need more ventilators. behind me here in new york city they're going to be building hospitals. fema is going to come in here and they're going to build thousands of beds and four sections here basically, four different types of federal hospitals, they're going to have all sorts of equipment, they're going to have ventilators, they're also bringing staff and the governor says that's what's so important in all of this. the equipment and staff and all of these critical systitems thae needed. the governor is going to tour the facility. this facility and this convention center takes up about 6 blocks here on manhattan west side, the large strong base which will allow fema all the room they need to b

our shimon prokupecz is in new york. shim shimon, now is an extraordinary news conference to go with unloading and dripping disdain and mocking tone at the federal government. >> reporter: he certainly was. you have to listen to this for an hour describing how the state is in need of dire help, ventilators he keeps on talking about. at one point he said release 20,000 ventilators and send them to the state. it is very clear based on what he seen and the projections. he's saying the apex is going to be higher and it is going to come much sooner. we are talking about 14 days perhaps, it is 14 to 21 days. he's mostly saying 14 days when we can start seeing the effect of this. he's tacalling for hospital bed. one of the staggering numbers of all this is today is up more than 700 people as a result of this disease around new york state are now intensive care units. that's going to run out at some point. those ventilators he's goi keep talking about, those are going to run out in the state. more needs to be released. he's also

shimon, thank you very much. shimon prokupecz in new york. colorado is under a statewide stay-at-home order to control the coronavirus outbreak. that order coming from the state's governor, as colorado now has more than 2,000 cases of the virus. governor jared polis is joining us right now. governor, thanks so much for taking a few moments and being with us. you just issued a stay-at-home order a few days ago. so can you imagine loosening those restrictions in some areas as the president seems to be considering? >> well, you know, wolf, when you say 2,000 cases or so in colorado, that's a number diagnosed, but like so many other areas, because of the lack of testing, we very likely have 5,000 to 10,000 active cases. there are many people who are symptomatic, being asked to stay at home, instead of going out for a test, unless you need medical attention, and nine in ten people who attract covid don't need additional care. you just need to stay at home and stay isolated. so we have many, many, many people doing that and they're not included in

stunning, shimon. thank you so much for a look inside what's a field hospital inside a convention center. thank you. president trump publicly pushes to reopen parts of the country, claiming some states are at a low risk, microsoft co-founder and philanthropist bill gates is warning against that, saying social distancing must be the country's top goal nationwide until the number of cases goes down. so here's what he told cnn's anderson cooper and dr. sanjay gupta last night. >> so we're entering into a tough period that if we do it right, we'll only have to do it once for six to ten weeks, but it has to be the whole country. we have to raise the level of testing and the prioritization of that testing quite dramatically to make sure we go through one shutdown, so that we take the medical problem really stop it before there's a large number of deaths. we do then get an economic problem which is why you want to minimize the amount of time and having states go to different things and thinking you can do it

shimon prokupecz joins me now. and shimon, how are the hospitals handling all of these cases? >> reporter: it's been a tough few days, certainly for the hospitals and it keeps getting tougher. i've been talking to people inside of hospitals and every day you just hear different kinds of stories, heroic stories from the doctors and the nurses that are really trying to work on patients and keep patients alive. what the city is doing to try and relieve some of the pressure on the hospitals, on these doctors, on these nurses and really the entire staff at these hospitals is by building out field hospitals. what you see behind me. the ship comfort is here to try to relieve the pressure. what they're doing at some point and this could be in the next few days, they're ready to start taking patients. but the city has to go through a process of picking out which patients they can bring to these hospitals. out to the field hospitals. so it is going to have to be patients who don't have coronavirus. there are other issues to make sure they clear before they bring it. this isn't going to

shimon, you're at the epicenter. we're seeing cases rise across the country, but new york is right now ground sdplezero. >> reporter: it is ground zero, and we're seeing that all across the city, whether it's queens, manhattan. you're seeing this all over the city, and keep in mind, john, we're not even at the apex. the governor has been talking about this apex. he says we could be two weeks away from that, and we're already seeing hospitals that are inundated, they don't have room for a lot of patients. as of the last count from the mayor's office last night, there were 840 people in icus all across this city. and that is where the emergency rooms, that is where the hospitals need the most help. it is those ventilators, of course. we're hearing stories, a lot of nurses and doctors take to social media because that is the only way, in some cases, for them to get their stories out, describing conditions inside this hospital. one doctor, her name is meredith, who took to twitter said yesterday was the worst day she has

shimon prokupecz is in north korea city where they're setting up a makeshift hospital. many hospitals are already overwhelmed, how are the facilities handling this influx? >> reporter: they are overwhelmed. in some cases, that is why you said the governor has ordered the directive really for the hospitals to increase their capacity by 50%. here at the jacob javit center we've heard about it. this is one of the sites where they'll set up a hospital. a thousand beds. we've seen them roll equipment in here today. you could see there are ventilators, the trucks are that you just see, they're the ones unloading the items, we have ventilators here. there are beds. all sorts of equipment. we're seeing some of the ppe equipment. that is here as well. the hope is to set this up. it is going to take several days, jake for the fema and the army corp of engineers to set this up. but this is going to be able to handle a thousand patients and this is just one of the places that the governor is hoping will be able to take this influx of patients that they expect because of this virus.

shimon, you're outside in manhattan. tell us how this process is likely to unfold and how quickly. >> reporter: how quickly is a great question, john, because right now we don't know. what i've been told is that there are officials inside, they're doing a walk-through, getting a sense of everything inside and how they're going to construct these hospitals. what they're going to do is there are going to be four separate sections of these hospitals, federal hospitals. they're going to be divided into four sections with 250 beds each, making 1,000 beds. what the governor has said, by having fema come in and do this, they bring the staff, they bring the equipment, and, of course, the ventilators. the critical equipment that we keep hearing the governor talk about, saying that we are going to need those ventilators. so with this, with the construction of these hospitals behind me here at the javits center, you're going to have that additional critical equipment. the other thing we heard at the governor's press conference, and

shimon prokupecz is live in new york city. shimon, the governor introducing economic measures to help residents. >> reporter: yeah, he is, jake. this is a big concern for many people who live in the state. i hear it from friends, family. everyone is worried about how they're going to pay for their homes. a lot of people getting laid off. a lot of people losing jobs. and as you said, 75% of the workforce here, in new york state, all across the state, being ordered to stay home. and with that the governor had said, he's going to offer some economic relief. a 90-day mortgage relief comes with some caveats. you have to have good credit. or other things. but for the most part, he's going to be offering 90-day mortgage relief. we're going to waive some mortgage payments. understanding that there's a lot of financial hardship all across this state. the governor also says he's going to be waiving late fees. and also a big concern, obviously, for people who can't make these mortgage payments. is foreclosure. and if they're going to go

shimon prokupecz is outside the javits center. now a thousand beds expected to be ready soon. are those beds getting occupied already, and how quickly do they expect the center to fill up? >> reporter: that's a great question, jim. right now we've seen no sign of any of the resources, no signs of fema here, no signs of the army corps of engineers, the folks that the president said yesterday would be arriving here within 48 hours. so far we have not seen any sign of them. of course, the governor yesterday pleading for this, telling the president that he would like another thousand beds behind me here inside this convention center which stretches some six blocks on the west side of manhattan. inside there will be four sections that are going to be basic hospitals, four federal hospitals is how they're described, and they'll be divided into four sections with 250 beds in each section. the other thing, by doing this, fema, by did he sesignating thi hospital behind me, they'll bring their own staff, they'll bring their own equipment, a lot of the critical equipment and critical car

i want to go to shimon prokupecz w who's in new york. tell us where you are now and what the governor has to say. >> reporter: thank you governor for joining us. i want to get to situations at the hospital. i have been talking to a neuro doctor, her name is vickie lane describing tough questions. they are seeing and they have a lot of patients. one of this things that's going on, some of the patients who need oxygen and other kind of medica medical caribe but not the most critical. other hospitals to relief some of the backlog so they can focus more of the serious folks that need care. >> you will see more and more of this. hospitals are reaching capacity. the first step as for hospitals surging the capacity level is that system has to redistribute patients among the system. we are talking to the new york city hospital system. if you have a hospital that's up near capacity, redistribute to other hospitals. if the projections are right, the numbers continue to grow. you will see every hospital get the capacity. that's when the facility li

shimon, how are these two departments now, fire and police, dealing with all of this? >> they're going forward. right? they have calls to respond to. they have help that they need to give to people. the police department continues to respond to reports of crime, despite the streets being everyoempty and people are at home. there's still crime and the fire department is seeing a record number of calls for help for ambulances people reporting they're sick. some 6,000 calls each day this past week is a record number for them. of course, as you said. 730 police officers, uniformed members of the nypd, there are all civilian members. in total 826 people inside the nypd who have contracted this virus. the governor today, the new york governor, governor cuomo, speaking about this, thanking the heroes on the front line and here's what he said. >> everyone is afraid pup think these police officers are not afraid to leave their house? do you think these nurses are not afraid to go into the hospital? they're afraid. but something is more important than their fear. which is -- the

cnn's shimon prokupecz is live in new york city, specifically the javits center which is being converted into a hospital. today the governor cuomo said there are more than 44,000 confirmed coronavirus cases and more than 500 deaths, just in new york state. that is up from 37,385 deaths yesterday and cuomo saying even though the cases are going up, he believes the overall rate is slowing down. explain that for us. >> reporter: right. and that rate is the hospitalization rate. they are seeing slivers of good news here. and i think whatever good news we can give folks right now, i think that is important. what is happening is they feel because of the social distancing and what they've done in this state and around this city, it's decreasing the number of people that are going to the hospital. so what he's saying, the governor is, at one point the hospitalization rate, the amount of times people were going to hospital was doubling every two and a half days. what they're finding now is that it is doubling every four days. it doesn't mean that people aren't going to continue to go to the hospi

shimon prokupecz in new york, thank you.rsey now where there are more than 1600 confirmed cases. those numbers jump so quickly every day. athena jones is at one of two state testing sites. she joins us from the pm art center in new jersey. how busy is it where you are there? >> reporter: you can see there is still a line at one of those tents of cars that is coming through. this is a site that opened on monday, and i'm told from the folks here the first few days, it was reaching capacity after about 15, 30 minutes. so far we still see cars coming in, which means they still have tests. they've been cutting it off at 250 tests each day, and so that is why they go through these tests pretty quickly. you can come here without an appointment. you just have to be a new jersey resident who is showing symptoms. if you meet those two requirements, you will not be turned away. everyone else will be and everyone will be turned away once they reach capacity. i should mention this is one of the two sites, this site and also the bergen co

shimon, you know, how is this new york police department coping with this stunning crisis? >> yeah.certainly are dealing with it in many different ways. it's been a tough few weeks there, here, for the nypd. talking about 730 police officers who have tested positive. and it's all ranks. detectives, it's police office, it's some on even the senior level of the nypd. a lot of these officers live in the community. whether it's within the five boroughs of new york city, or whether it's outside. out on long island or parts of westchester, they go home, and in some cases this is where some of this is being transmitted and how they're contracting the virus. so it's hurting the police department, because they need their officers. there's still crime. even though the city's dealing with this virus, many people are not on the street. there are still pockets of violence and still crime they immediate to respond to. one of the things i'm told the nypd is looking at and they sent this notice out to their members is that maybe keeping some of the officers who have underlying conditions, allowing

shimon, thank you very much. as the coronavirus related death toll in new york now surpasses 1,200, new york's governor says almost 10,000 people are currently hospitalized across the state. cnn's miguel marquez went inside a new york city hospital for an exclusive how one facility is trying to handle this crisis. miguel is joining us now live. what are you learning? >> reporter: sobering is what i can tell you. on a good day this is a hospital that has plenty coming through the front door to keep them busy. coronavirus is pushing this hospital right to the edge. every corridor, every corner, every ward, every inch of brookdale hospital medical center in brooklyn now inundated with those suffering from covid-19. what are you look at on a daily basis? how difficult is this? >> well, this is war zone, it's a medical war zone. every day i come in what i see on a daily basis is pain, despair, suffering and health care disparities. >> brookdale it said at least 100 confirmed cases with more than 80 awaiting confirmati

shimon prokupecz says about 150 cars were processed. does that mean 150 people were tested yesterday? >> it depends on the occupancy of the car. so if a car had one person, two people, three people, four people. it actually worked well. the drive-thru does a number of things. keeps people out of the emergency room. everyone is so anxious now they walk into an emergency room, that's the last thing you want to do. you walk into an emergency room, if you are positive you infect other people and staff. if you're not positive, you wind up exposing yourself to people in the emergency room who may be positive. so first, stay home, use tele-medicine. second, the drive-thrus allow you to stay in your vehicle. you come into a drive through and people come to you, they take the test. we thought it would be about 15 minutes per car, it's actually less. so we're going to increase the volume. but you don't expose yourself, you don't expose others. and it's the fastest, safest way to get these tests done. the testing has been such a major problem, as

cnn's shimon prokupecz is live in new york's jacob javits convention center converted into a makeshift hospital. and the numbers governor cuomo cited are just protections. new yorkers still need to heed caution. >> reporter: certainly, jake. people -- everyone across the world, the nation, needs to heed caution and be careful still. and there is the piece of good news, the efforts in this city, this state, all across the nation is working. and they're basing that off of models and predictions that health officials, state officials have been looking at. and what they're finding is that the rate of hospitalization has somewhat decreased. meaning that when they looked over the past few days, some of it has decreased and here is what they said about it. that on sunday that as of sunday there was the rate of hospitalization was doubling every two days. and then on monday the rate of hospitalization was doubling at every 3.4 days and then tuesday the hospitalization rate was doubling every 4.7 days. it is doing for them exactly what the governor has asked. he wanted to slow down the rate of

shimone joins us now from new york. so talk to me about the plan for the comfort while it's docked in new york because it's not going to be taking coronavirus patients. >> that's right, anderson. and that's the key thing here. that is not something that this ship is going to take. and, really, you talk about comfort. it's really about relief. relief for many of the doctors and the nurses and the medical teams that are dealing with the coronavirus all across the city. and so what they are going to do here, there's a thousand beds. there are operating rooms. there are labs. it's a hospital. and what -- what they're going to do is they're going to take patients who meet the criteria. they're going to transfer them out of hospitals across the city and bring them here so they can get the care that they need. and this way, it relieves a lot of the city hospitals from having to focus on these patients. and they could, specifically, focus on patients and more -- most importantly in all of these, it's the critically ill patients

. >> shimon prokupecz in new york city. >>> joining me now is elizabeth cohen.h the governor's announcement that they're going to try to put two people on one ventilator in an experimental procedure. how is this going to work? >> jake, this tells us how bad this is gotten that they are feeling like they need to do this. so a ventilator breathes pushing air into a patient and you could rearrange the tubing so that the ventilator can breathe for two patients. s in not ideal. because ventilators are fit to the patient. there are different settings and you want to put it on the best setting for that patient. now you have to put it on the best setting for either of those patients and so you'll try to group patients together who have similar needs. but, jake, we've talked about the heroism and the incredible smarts of these health care workers. that right now they're sharing advice. here is how to do this. use this setting, use this tubing. do this, do that ander that already preparing for how to do this. >> new york state is starting a trial for an experimental drug
