shimon, what stood out to you? obviously, hearing the governor of texas say that he was misled and that he's livid, i suppose, with law enforcement officials about what he was told earlier this week is obviously big news. but he did seem to be dodging some questions as well, again, we're heading into the evening with more questions really than answers. >> right. and he i think is saying he wants every action to be investigated by every official who was involved and suggesting that it's going to be the texas rangers. but then he's also talking about the fbi being involved in this investigation, which right now they're not. they have been just assisting authorities here. we need to get some clarification, certainly from the fbi on that. is he saying he wants the fbi to now come into this investigation? i'm not entirely sure of some of the nuance on that. that's something that could potentially be interesting. i don't think i heard him talk about the department of public safety. this is the head there, steven mccraw,

. >> let's bring in shimon right now. your exchange just now, that mistakes were made. that must be so heart breaking for the parents of those students to hear. >> reporter: i bet it is. you know, we've seen the video of the parents who were outside the school on the day of the shooting. they knew something wasn't right. by the way the police were reacting. right? they saw the officers standing outside while they themselves were hearing gunshots. wanting to go inside and rescue their kids. save their children. they were depending on the police to do that. and clearly, that did not happen in this case. it took some pushing todays of asking, but we finally have the answers. something did not add up here. something just didn't make sense. and finally, after yesterday avoiding that question, we got our answer today, and the police admitting here that it was a mistake. they should have gone in. i have talked to several law enforcement officials. former. we've had people on our air. there is no sense in this kind of decision. a tactical decision to wait when students are insi

rosa, shimon, thank you both. joining us, former philadelphia police commissioner and former washington, dc police chief ramsey. good to have your expertise in these moments. i do want to talk about -- >> thank you. >> let's start with the timeline. shimon pointed out, and jim and i talked about this throughout the morning. two of the glaring questions that we're trying to answer this morning, understanding that this is still early in the investigation is, was that response appropriate and how was this shooter able to get into the school and perhaps be barricaded in the classroom for such a long time? based on what you learned so far in the last several hours. where do you think this investigation is heading? >> well, there's still a lot of unanswered questions. and you're right. i mean, 30 minutes is a long time, and it's not consistent with the kind of active shooter training that i have been exposed to. now, i don't know if the officers have body cameras. certainly, there's radio traffic that needs to be listen

shimon prokupecz is there. what's happening? >> reporter: yeah, fred, so we came out of the area of the park where they're having the speakers speak, to show you outside, as we get ready to march, the march is supposed to set off here shortly. some of the speakers are still going. many of the people here are gathered outside here. we've been seeing a steady, steady extreme of people still coming here as they prepare to march. the police are set up here. the theme here really for most people is just to keep fighting, don't give up. the fact that this leaked draft opinion came out, they're saying that should not allow people to lose hope, that the fight has to continue, reminding people that there is an election in november. and one of the overwhelming themes, fred, that we have been hearing from the speakers here today, is how this ruling, should it stand, should roe get overturned, is that it's going to affect underserved communities, low income communities. and that's what we've been hearing so much from many of the people who

. >> cnn's shimon prokupecz is in uvalde, as he has been for days, asking these questions. so shimon, what was revealed today, it was devastating because, i mean, even the director of public safety there looked devastated and had so much regret that they made so many mistakes. >> reporter: right, and he said he wasn't the commander on scene, the incident commander being the police chief of this small police department that's assigned to the school. about four officers, a security guard, that's all that's assigned to this school resource police department. we got a bigger time line as well from the director of the department of public safety. he went into some more detail about that morning, and how the events here unfolded, as you said. this all started around 11:30 in the morning, at 11:27 a.m. they have video surveillance video at the school that shows a teacher leaving the door open. she propped an exterior door. this is the door that the government ultimately used to get in. they then say about a minute later. the suspect crashes his car, then at 11:30 they get their fi

i'm joined by shimon prokupecz here in uvalde. just want to start with that really tough fact to digest which is that these family members are giving dna samples to help match with the murdered children. >> that means that these injuries are pretty gruesome. these little bodies shot, indications that perhaps they are having a hard time identifying them so they need dna from these families and just how difficult that must be for these family members. many of them who went home after spending hours at the center here trying to get word of their kids, their grandkids, parents, grandparents who came in from as far as san antonio to try to find out what's going on with their grandkids and having to give this dna sample, waiting for word on their loved ones. that just gives you some indication of just how gruesome it must have been inside this school. john, you know, i just got here a short time ago like you and i walked up and down the street and i'm struck by how flat this structure is and how it's just one floor and how easy it is fo

joining me now though is cnn's shimon prokupecz.re getting new information just in to cnn about some ominous foreboding messages on instagram from the shooter. >> and this, according to the instagram posts and people we've talked to, this post was hours before the shooting and it was to a woman who he didn't know. randomly chose someone, very bizarre and tagged her in the photo. remember that instagram post had the photos of the two weapons that he had. and he wrote to her and said, i got a little secret. out of the blue, she says this happened. cnn was able to speak to her. she said, just happened out of the blue. she doesn't know him. this is completely random. she then says she's exchanging messages with him and she writes to him, what your guns got to do with me? and he basically said be grateful i tagged you. i'm about to, he doesn't explain himself, and then he writes, i got a little secret. some indications of something going on. some, perhaps, form of planning of something to happen, but what, we don't know. certainly, law e

shimon, i want to bring you in. you have been on the ground since the start reporting this story out. what more are we learning about what border patrol agents entered the classroom where the gu gunman was? >> we were told he was in a closet, almost waiting for the border patrol agents to burst through the door and that he started firing at those agents from this closet. we are told he kicked open the closet door ask began shooting at the agents once they got inside the classroom, breaking through that door after some-hour delay in getting through that door, and so the gunman, it appears, was are ready for them to come in and start fierding at pem, pam. >> and andrew, you know, so often in these mass shootings, you go back and look at if there was a digital trail. and so often, there is. on in case, several social media users tell cnn the gunman made threats to rape girls and shoot up schools. given threats like that and his buying more than a thousand rounds of ammunition, how big were these missed-red flags? >> we

>> how long will you be there at the supreme court, shimon? >> reporter: so this is supposed to go until at least 4:00. at least that's the information that we have. certainly when we get to the supreme court, i'm assuming there will be some counter protesters. we've seen them along the marching line here, just on the corners, just a few of them, aall across the avenue here, constitution, that they've been gathered there, using megaphones to speak, but obviously the folks here in this march are focused on one thing, they're not getting into any kind of altercations with those people, just passing them by. but the big event here now after we left the rally on the steps of the washington monument is now at the supreme court. which is where we're heading. you can see, sadly we can't give you an overhead shot here, but there are thousands of people here, jim. you can see holding various signs, young people, older people, people who protested the vietnam war are out here. so it continues. and as the day has gone on, the rally started around noon or

, when there's fundamental distrust or lack of creditability in the process, shimon porkupecz, thank you so much. perspective now from cnn law enforcement analyst and deputy director andrew mccabe, andrew, it's very tough to hear today and some questions you must have the timeline authorities gave today and let me say, every time i speak to you, it's a different timeline we have. a different either kernel of truth or a nugget of disbelief we are all experiencing so i want to know what does it tell you that as many as, and i can't even believe this number, as many as 19 officers stayed in the hallway while kids were calling 911 from inside the classroom who were actually begging for help. what is your reaction when you hear that. >> well laura, it's maybe the most tragically monumentally bad law enforcement decision i have ever witnessed and i saw some pretty bad ones over the years. i'll tell you, and people are very rightly thinking about accountability and wanting to know more from this incident comm commander we heard about and haven't been able to speak to. but i have to tell you

cnn's shimon prokupecz has more on this and joins us now. shimon, what more are you learning about the suspect's plans? >> reporter: right, so we've learned that police have discovered new information that they believe indicates that he was here back in march, at least three visits to the tops supermarket. of course, all of this coming, police say, from the words of the alleged shooter. these are online postings that they are combing through, that they continue to find. i'm told that there are several social media accounts, so it could mean that we have not seen everything, and they are still working through some of the social media accounts. certainly troubling to investigators is the idea that he was radicalized and his radicalization started months ago, perhaps even as long as a year ago or even more. in particular, radicalized by the 2019 christchurch shooting, of course, in new zealand. what they are finding is that there's a lot of similarities between that mass shooting and this mass shooting, and so they are saying that they believe

cnn's shimon prokupecz is live in the nation's capitol. polo sandoval is in new york and naddio romero is live in atlanta. so let's check in with shimon prokupecz. what are you seeing? >> reporter: yeah, so thousands out here now, fredricka. as they listen to some of the speakers. that are taking the stage here, local politician and other folks from planned parenthood. speaking to the crowd and getting them fired up. and then look apr this crowd here as you see signs everywhere here for many of the people who have come here from all across the country. places like seattle, and other parts of west coast and people who drove here from baltimore, and from new york city. all wanting to be here to fight, they say, as they begin what they say a new phase in this fight. they are saying that they are fighting for abortion access, the concern being that many people who can't afford, who are living in poverty, this will effect them the most. and so many of them out here today fighting, voicing their opinion after the leaked draft opinion. as you cou

think about it, many of these kids were 9, 10, their parents, shimon, as you know, likely not planningdidn't think about writing an obituary. parents are supposed to outlive their children so they are preparing to do that now and the bodies that haven't been released, john, will be released later today. >> and we are learning so much more about the victims themselves. as you say, i mean, these families they were planning summer vacations. they never thought they would be planning funerals right now. >> no, today was supposed to be the last day of school. it was supposed to be the start of the summer break and many of these students and their families were looking forward to this summer because, think of about t for the last two years things haven't been normal, we were in the middle of a pandemic so they were planning to see their friends at camp and some children were just looking forward to advancing to the next grade. i'm sure you remember when you were a third grader, preparing to go to fourth grade, because your friends had been in fourth grade and they told you so much about that

cnn's shimon is there. shimon, do you have any -- any clue on what detail they could be providing in this next press conference? >> reporter: no, there isn't, kate. if it's anything like yesterday where they came to the podium and refused to take questions, it's just going to be a problem for them. they can't come here and just decide they'll fake five questions. which is essentially what they did yesterday. different today. we'll be hearing from the director of the department of public safety. this is the largest law enforcement agency in the state of texas. they are by all accounts running this operation here. so they have a lot of information. so hopefully we will get more information on exactly what happened here and critical is the 12-minute gap in the beginning when this happens at 11:28 when this all first unravels and then, of course, it's that hour, that one hour where from 11:44 a.m. to 12:44 a.m. the gunman is inside this classroom, what are the police doing? that was the key question yesterday t

>> and one other piece of this disturbing puzzle, shimon, our cnn detailed some of the texts, moments before this massacre. the shooter was texting essentially telling somebody, a woman he met online what he was about to do. >> reporter: yeah. they apparently met online. she lives in germany. he starts texting her around 11:30 local time. he sends her a message saying he's in some kind of a fight with his grandmother, he's going to shoot her. then he says he shoots her. around 15 minute bfrs the shooting at the school, he says i'm going to go shoot up an elementary school right now, and then sadly, we know what happens. so that was -- those are some of the first indications that this involved some planning. certainly investigators are trying to figure out more on that. but also interestingly, john, they have not really been able to find a big social media presence to sort of try and figure out what he was consuming, what he was doing. did something trigger him? was there something online? was he studying something that radicalized him? there's none of that. all they're left with is tr

shimon, what can you tell us? officials are saying eight have been killed. it's going to be a really rough night for folks in buffalo. that number could rise. so last count, that's what officials were receiving about eight were killed. we're also learning that the police and law enforcement have written in documents, manifesto, that could be linked to the alleged shooter. so that is something they're reviewing. documents that were posted online. and the fbi is certainly going to assist the local authority there. federal officials who are all helping at the moment. the suspect we're told is in custody so that changes things for investigators because now they have to potentially prosecute this person. so things are slowly coming out. but the big news here now is that at least eight have been killed. people shopping for the day, the weekend and tragically killed. and so now the local authority there, federal authorities here, trying to sort out exactly what was the motivation here. the attorney general we're told by

shimon, moments ago, we saw the governor of texas, abbott, claims he was misled. they can't get their stories straight and now they're pointing fingers, are we starting to piece together what happened and what went wrong? >> reporter: i don't know if we know what went wrong. someone was providing that information of senior leaders and law enforcement whether people are lying or making themselves out to be heroes. they were trying to cover responsibility. that's something going through investigation and hopefully will figure it out. the thing with the governor, he was briefed by the head of dps, director of public safety here in texas. he took to the podium today to reveal all of these information. that was someone reporting directly to the governor and re re re re resu resu resumablely. everyone calling for some type of an independent investigation, hopefully, that'll develop information that can shed lights. there is still so many remaining questions. >> no question about that. authorities now say it was the wrong decisions for officers to wait outside the classr

shimone, thank you very much for all of your reporting.et's bring in now andrew mccabe, our senior law analyst and former fbi deputy director. great to have you here. what are your thoughts? >> reporter: wow. so many questions. i was just kind of sitting here going over some of those comments in the press conference and there are really just i think we have, there is, we realize there is less that we know now as a result of that press conference. one of the things that jumped out at me, allison, is the regional director from the department of public safety indicated when he was describing the subject's entry at 11:40 to the school to the west side door and he begins to describe that we know based on quoting video outside and inside the school that he fired multiple numerous rounds in the school. so it's hard to say that any of this actually answers any questions. because things keep changing so quickly here. but he indicated that there is video from inside the school. i know that was a question that victor had for the former principal and

i want to bring in shimon prokupecz. clearly, there was a potentially deadly disconnect between 911 dispatch and officers on the ground or i don't know what to think of this. what explanation is there for this? >> well, we don't have really an explanation for this. other police departments communicate regularly, sadly, in these types of situations, an active shooting situation, where 911 dispatchers are able to communicate with police officers on the ground when they see something, when they hear something, when they're getting calls from people inside. so we're not getting that kind of explanation. despite the director here taking, you know, a fair number of questions, those kind of details we still don't have. they are important. specifically like that one piece of detail as to why the head of the school police here decided that this was going to be a barricaded situation with people's lives, children, teachers inside this classroom whose lives were in danger, but decided he wasn't going to treat this as an active shoo

let's bring in shimon prokupecz who is also on the scene in texas along with us along with senior law enforcement analyst, charles ramsey, former philadelphia police commissioner and former d.c. police chief. shimon, this is yet another revision of the timeline and the details we have been given from the authorities. this is an incredibly important new detail of how the gunman actually got into the school, right? >> right. it is. and wolf, i'm not sure we really have a full accounting or a full understanding still, even with this new information of how the gunman got inside the school. what they're saying now is they have reviewed additional video, new information which now says, which now shows that the teacher actually closed the door, but that the door didn't lock. why it didn't lock, we don't know. and certainly, we don't know how it is that this new information came to authorities. we do know that the lawyer, a lawyer for this teacher came forward with this new information, and then that's what ultimately led the dps to confirm this. now, yes, wolf, this has been the problem with

cnn's shimon joins me now with much more on the investigation. what more do we know? or maybe i should ask, what don't we know this morning? >> there are still critical questions, questions that need to be asked, answers that we need as to the response here. and each day, we learn that there is new information which indicates that the police were delayed here. this gunman was allowed to remain in the school for up to an hour. i am seeing reports, it could be more than that. he was firing his weapon with these children inside this classroom. police took some time to get these tactical teams here and to storm the classroom, to get inside the classroom. there is also the lieutenant he spoke to this morning. there was a locking mechanism on the door that may have prevented police from getting inside that classroom faster. there are a lot of questions. the timeline, when did the first officers respond, when do the tactical teams going? who was in charge? it was making decisions while there were gunshots being fired inside this school? who was making the decisions about whe

he spoke with cnn's shimon prokupecz. shimon joins us live from buffalo. it is an incredibly moving story, shimon. >> reporter: it is. what a remarkable man, jerome bridges, he works at the store, describing to us and really just great detail, and frightening moments of when he heard the gunshots and what he did to try and save the people inside the store. >> he was getting closer and closer to the back, to the point where he was actually shooting at the displays that are, like the milk display. i wanted to make sure i kept the customers and my other three co-workers very safe. even if i would have died, it would have been me dying protecting them. >> reporter: you were ready to take a bullet for them? >> yes. yes, i was. >> reporter: and as to that suspect, he is expected to be in court here in the next 90 minutes. we may hear new evidence, this is a felony hearing where prosecutes may present new information, new evidence. that's expected to begin at about 9:30. we don't know who will be in court for the suspect, if his parents will be showing up here. t

let's begin with our cnn crime and justice reporter shimone on the scene. .e are getting new details about how this played out? >> we are. authorities are saying they now believe the shooting all took place in one classroom within an ad joining classroom. but all of the victims who were shot and injured all occurring in one classroom after the gunman barricaded himself in this classroom. authorities, law enforcement that was on scene was unable to penetrate the door to try and stop him. they had to wait for reenforcement and so that took some time and, john, we are also learning of new information, instagram posts that authorities are reviewing, law enforcement is reviewing. where as you showed the gunman posted photos of the guns that he bought. he then tagged someone randomly, a woman who he tagged, she doesn't know him. he doesn't know her. saying that, quote, this apparently happened hours before the shooting, job. she writes. he wrote to her. i got a little secret. she then responds, what's your gun got to do with me? then he says, be grateful i tagged y

we did not get answers to that. >> also, we are learning not shimon, boris. we are learning what's happening outside the school. there were parents begging with police officers to go in with law enforcement or give them their gear so they could go in themselves. >> it was a moment of panic when the news spread across town there was a shooting at robb elementary school. parents rushed over here trying to help their children. when they got here, it was in that space that lull that we heard law enforcement officers referred to that shimon was describing when the shooter was barricaded inside and a kraud of law enforcement officers outside. there was one parent, victor luna who told cnn that he asked police, give me a gun, give me a vest. i'll go in there myself. the officers refused. he later told our colleague that police were doing their job but he doesn't believe they were doing it fast enough. his son was inside, was able to get out alive. it took a long time and that agitated him as well. >> there's this corner and if you can go around another way and go to

shimon prokupecz is live in uvalde, texas. so, you do have some of these new details, shimon. what are we learning and what is still a question at this point? >> reporter: so significant information that we learned this morning from the lieutenant for dps lieutenant who spoke to john berman on "new day" this morning, key thing here is we are learning that the door, the door in which the gunman entered, that door was unlocked. we have been asking how this gunman entered the school, the lieutenant this morning saying that door was unlocked, allowing him inside the school. the lieutenant also revealing that the gunman entered the school essentially he's using words describing it as unimpeded. he was able to get inside the school despite the confrontation that he had with that resource officer. all indications is that there was no gunfire outside of the school. meaning that the gunman and that officer did not exchange gunfire. the lieutenant also describing more of what was going on in those tense moments. >> right now we do not have an accurate or concrete timeline to provide to,

let's get to cnn's shimon prokupecz. you have been there on the scene trying to get answers for days and this afternoon we got them and they're devastating. >> reporter: they are truly devastating. and you just feel for these families, to hear the police, the leading agency here, the department of -- i can't even say their name, the dps people, public safety, to hear him say that a wrong decision was made, you can't even imagine what these families are going through. and you're right, alison, we finally got a more detailed timeline of what happened. so let's just take a look at that and just go straight from the beginning of that day since we now finally have this timeline, something we've been asking for. that morning on 11:27 a.m., video shows that there was a schoolteacher, doors open, she left the door -- the schoolteacher left the door open and then at 11:28 there's a car crash. the car goes in the ditch. and then at 11:30, we have our first 911 call about the crash and then the suspect is seen exiting the car. sign

shi m shimon is live for us. you have the video that goes into the timeline of the questions of the police response. and also this from the dispatch. >> we have a child online. he is in the room full of victims. >> the key here is piecing it together to try to understand really the thing we cannot understand, why the police waited so long to storm that classroom. >> reporter: right. and that's the thing. and that piece of video that abc news cob obtained is significant, because it tells us the 9-1-1 dispatchers that were receiving the calls from the kids trapped in this classroom with the gunman, they were relaying that information to the officers on the ground which indicates that the officers knew that there were people alive in that classroom, that they were still facing a threat from the gunman, so again, it begs the question of why didn't the police having that information from the 9-1-1 dispatchers, why did they not go in sooner? we've also been learning and talking to officials here and law enforcement off

shimon, one big unanswered question is about is that incident commander who you've mentioned. we've not heard from him since wednesday i think in a printed statement. have you all been trying to reach the police who were inside that school? >> absolutely. we still have crews out there and reporters and producers who are trying to reach out to them. for us, this is all obviously a team effort. and it's so important, brian. you and i were talking that subject matter experts, reporters who are subject matter experts, this is where i certainly have found it very helpful in asking the right questions and certainly our team here, my colleague evan perez and people who i can bounce things off of -- >> you have reporters who have done this before and know what to ask. >> and can zero in on specific, nuanced crucial information. because it is critical in a story like this to get to the bottom of exactly what happened. and some of that nuance is important. and having the good people to support you, my producer and i matt friedman, this was a very grueling days. but we just kept going at

cnn crime and justice correspondent shimon prokupecz is in uvalde.e're getting this new perspective from an off-duty border patrol agent who was in the school after the gunman locked himself in that classroom. what did that agent say? >> reporter: yeah, he went to the school because both his daughter and his wife -- his wife is a teacher, and his daughter is a student, and essentially, went there to rescue them. he spoke this morning, talked about what he saw and also talked about the moment as he walked near that door where the gunman was. take a listen. >> i was there at the door, fixing to go in, but once again, i didn't have any of my gear. it wouldn't have been a smart move for me. all those guys, they had their gear and stuff. so like i said, i pulled back. pulled back. my wife had texted me, called me that she was okay at the funeral home. all the kids were already out of that building so i went on to find my daughter and her. >> there's a lot of scrutiny now about the police response. what's your take on all of that? >> to me, i believe every

andrew, you heard shimon's reporting. you've heard the law enforcement analysis. i'm wondering what you make of what we now know, and there's a lot we still don't know. >> yeah. so first of all, anderson, i want to be just very clear about this. no former law enforcement person, myself included, wants to sit here 24 hours later and start criticizing what local police did or didn't do responding to a crisis event, right? this is like very uncomfortable. and we don't know what happened. we don't know the absolute tick-tock of who showed up, when, and where they went, and what they saw, and what they planned to do, and how they may have been pinned down, what resources they had, what resources they didn't. we will find all of that out later. but i can tell you that the idea that law enforcement officers would hold a position in a school for 30 minutes or more while shooting was taking place, while a barricaded gunman was shooting victims inside of a classroom, that is not consistent with the way that active shooter training is delivered in thousands of police agencie

shimon, what are investigators learning from these online posts? the president said, in talking about this poison, what they have found is that the hundreds of pages of documents and posts made by the alleged shooter, that he was consuming this poison that the president talked about. months and months and perhaps as long as a year, maybe even longer than a year, studying masshootings, studying white supremacists, and then he wrote about a lot of it. what they recently found was a social media post where he came here in march, police say, and where he drew maps of the supermarket, where he noted different exits were, and the people that were inside the supermarket. in the post on march 9th -- he encountered who was questioning him about what he was doing inside the supermarket. he also then the next day was back here and wrote on march 10th that he was going to have to kill the security guard. i hope he doesn't kill me or even hurt me instantly. of course, we know that the alleged shooter wore body armor, that the security guard tried to stop him. t

victor, stand by because rosa flores and shimon prokupecz are joining us right now. there's a lot to unpack in everything we heard in that press conference. let's start with the mentions of mental health. rosa, let's go to you. there was very heavy on mental health and he was tiss-- and th governor was talking about all the things he put in place in 2019 legislatively. none of those have worked i think we can conclude right now standing in front of this elementary school. >> what the governor failed to mention is the constitutional carry that was passed here in the state of texas. i've asked him this question in the past. does that send a message to individuals like this shooter that it's okay to carry on some of these acts or to even purchase weapons in the case of mental health. we know that the answer should be, no, they should not be buying these weapons, and we end up with these types of atrocities. one of the things that also really stood out to me that was mentioned in this press conference, and we're trying to get more clarity alisyn is when they were going t

first, shimon prokupecz has more. what more can you tell us? what are you learning? >> reporter: wolf, certainly people are taking advantage sadly of what happened here in that they are calling in threats, trying to keep the fear alive in buffalo. a pizzeria, one man called in a threat to a pizzeria, a local brewery. that man was arrested. police yesterday saying they arrested that man and he was charged with making a terroristic threat. there was also a walmart that was facing some threats. as a result, they were forced to close. of course, police are saying these are copy cat style things people are doing to try and instill fear. wolf, you know this area well. people here are not going to live in fear. over my left there are hundreds of people gathered outside here for a prayer vigil, diverse group, kids, people from all over the area are now gathering here, despite the continued threats that people are trying to make and trying to keep the fear in the community alive. people here say they're not going to go for it. they're going to stick together and keep fighting

let's bring in crime and justice correspondent shimon. having covered these, my impression was law enforcement in the drills that they are forced to do all the time have realized you have to get into the school as fast as possible. there used to be a debate about it. now we know you got to get in there. >> right. you form a team as quickly as you can, and you get inside and neutralize the threat. that's what they're taught. we're not getting a lot of answers from law enforcement officials. it's kind of coming piece by piece. some of it murky. some of it contradictory. that's what we're waiting for. neutralize the threat and try to save the children. so hopefully at some point we'll get that timeline. what's really -- what has everyone asking so many questions really is because it -- the gunman was in there for an hour, more than an hour, while police were trying to figure out how to get inside this classroom. >> and while parents were beseeching the police officers, get in there, storm the building, let us storm the build, fathers said le

>> shimon prokupecz in uvalde, texas, for us. joining us to discuss is julian peterson, cofounder of the violence project which studies mass shootings and the best ways to potentially stop them. you talk about this idea that mass shootings are socially contagious. does that mean that you think it's possible or even likely that the uvalde shooter may have been motivated by the horrific murders by the buffalo gunman? >> yeah, i think it is likely, although we don't know yet. but our research shows that mass shootings are socially contagious. they tend to cluster, so when one happens, you see two or three more happen right afterward. and part of this might be somebody who is thinking about this, who is maybe planning it. they're kind of right on the edge. they see somebody else do it, they see the attention that perpetrator gets. they see their manifesto go viral, and that's enough to embolden them to then also carry out a mass shooting. >> you have done this very detailed research, and jow found that most mass shooters fit a specif

cnn's shimon prokupecz has more on the investigation from buffalo. >> reporter: police revealing newnformation on sunday saying that the alleged shooter received a mental health evaluation last year after an unspecified threat at a school -- at his school where he lives. they say that the state police brought him to the hospital and he received this evaluation. we don't have any other information. they say up until this point he has not been on anyone's radar. they also say that the weapons that were used in this case, the two that they found and then the one that was used in this shooting were all purchased legally. they are investigating his social media and his internet access indicating that he was research this location. they also say that he was here on friday, out here, looking around, indicating that perhaps that he was planning this for some time. also investigators say that his parents, his parents have been cooperating, but he also, according to sources, has been making statements to investigators, what they have described to me as being disturbing, and talked about the mo

cnn crime and justice correspondent shimon prokupecz is outside the school where it took place.ou've been pressing for answers on this. there's been a lot of back and forth and incorrect information early on but what's consistent here are indications of a slow police response. what do we know? >> reporter: yeah, absolutely. jim, those are all indications and, look, a senior, former senior law enforcement officials who are experts are all saying this. they're saying the response here, the tactics here just do not seem right based on the way you handle active shooter situations and that it is you go towards the gunfire, you engage the shooter and need to eliminate that threat. so authorities are not answering that question. there is that hour that you spoke about between 11:44 and 12:44 where the gunman is inside that classroom. we're hearing stories from these children inside this room hiding, having to play dead while the police are outside trying to figure out what to do. so those are the questions we have. we are trying to figure out what were the police doing in that hour. th

. >> let me bring in cnn correspondent, shimon prokupecz, also here. we know about these past interactions with law enforcement, based one of them on the mention of murder/suicide in high school. >> reporter: yeah, it was described as a generalized threat to us, and based off of that, the school contacted the state police and the state police went to his home, and then they did what they said they were supposed to do. they took him to the hospital where he received a mental health evaluation. he was there for about a day or day and a half, according to investigators. victor, i spoke to the police commissioner here yesterday after their press conference about that, and he sort of indicated that there was really not much they can do. there was this concern over his mental state, his mental health. they took him in, they did what they were supposed to do. as to whether or not there was any follow-up, he couldn't tell us. he doesn't know what happened after that. and because of privacy laws, really, there's not much more people can tell us about this. >> w

. >> cnn crime and justice correspondent shimon prokupecz is in uvalde, texas, this morning. you spoke a short time ago with lieutenant chris olivarez from the texas department of public safety and i know he laid out a little bit more, new details in terms of the timeline here and even where the alleged shooter was inside the school. what is that new information he shared with you? >> well, first, erica, it is important to note all the victims here have been identified, that was something new that he revealed to us. he said that the families have been notified of the identity of all of the children that were killed here and the bodies were all removed. remember last night some of the families were waiting to be notified, spent all night at a center. i think that's important to note. so that the families could begin their process and the healing process perhaps as well as this community. other significant information really has to do with the investigation. we learned from the lieutenant that the shooter here barricaded himself in one classroom. it is different from what we we

joining me now with more details on this is cnn's shimon prokupecz. we do know a lot more, a lot more of the holes have been filled in as to what happened here, still there are remaining questions. >> right. we learned yesterday from the authorities here in their press conference that the gunman was inside the school up to an hour, anywhere from 40 to 60 minutes, and we still don't have enough clarity on what was going on here inside the school during that time and also the beginning, how all of this unfolded. we learned yesterday that the gunman after he crashes his car there is some what they call an engagement, they are engaged, there is an officer on scene, the school resource officer who is engaged with the gunman. what happens in those moments? yesterday authorities said there were no gunshots, there was no exchange of gunfire. so, okay, so what happens? what does that entail, the fact that they were engaged? and then he gets into the room, into the school through the back door and then obviously the shooting unfolds. the big question is why did

let's go to buffalo where shimon prokupecz is on the ground.hat are you hearing from investigators from the moments before this attack? >> reporter: right. it appears, as you said, he spent months allegedly planning, this according to officials who reviewed social media postings from as far back as march. indicating he had been been here visiting this tops supermarket, doing what they call a reconnaissance sort of mission, to say. they're concerned about the fact that he was here talking to people, looking around, planning his attack that he spent months doing. and also they discovered that he spent some time researching the weapons. a lot of the investigation that the versions have comes from the alleged shooter's own words. the documents that he posted online, along with fbi investigators are reviewing the toum documents, poring over it. sitting at home, and ultimately what led him to strike on saturday still unclear. also, we have a new photo of the weapons that he brought with him two his location. on it, investigators tell me, there are so
