joining me now, cnn senior crime and justice correspondent, shimon prokupecz.enior law enforcement analyst andrew mccabe. national security analyst juliette cayenne. and also, our senior terrorism and the crime and justice analyst, john miller. thank you all so much for being with us. john, let me start just with you, first of all. again, one hour ago, we did hear from msu police. they told us at that point there had been five injured. since that news conference, we have learned three fatalities. they have also released these photos that we now see of the suspect. what are you expecting, or what are you hoping to learn at this next news conference? >> well, i believe what we are now learning is that at approximately 11:56, 11:54 pm, a michigan state police unit on patrol spotted a suspect, fitting this description, walking on lake lansing road. they asked for the description to be repeated. it was a male with black pants, blue jean jacket, red shoes, wearing a backpack. they approached the mail. the male took out a weapon and according to police, conducted one,

okay, shimon, what is the latest reporting? to go back to the photo that we showed of the suspect. obviously that, is the key thing. to try to find this guy in the shoes in jean-jacques it and the baseball cap. what i think is interesting here is that it appears he's walking into this building here. so, we don't know what building this is. we don't know if this is berkey hall or union, the other building where this second incident occurred. the questions are going to be raised about how he got inside of that building. obviously that's something that i wanted to flag. it appears he is walking in. i don't know where he goes from. here we don't have the luxury of asking the police right now. they say that his last known location was leaving that mou union hall. obviously, from what i'm hearing from friends who attended the school, the way this area, as he could be anywhere. we are talking about a very large area, a wooded area. there's a large community. obviously, the whereabouts of this gunman right now taken a lot of time. ther

. >> joining me now from the new york -- shimon prokupecz.on, cnn law enforcement andrew mccabe. and last and national security analyst shawn turner, and cnn's juliette kayyem. thank you all for being with us. let's start with, you shimon. bring us up to speed. what did we know about how this all played out? >> john, about five hours or so, around, as you said, 20 after eight, there was a first call of shots fired and what we've learned from police is that they went from that one location at one of the areas, berkey, that building that the gunmen then went to a second building a union hall where he shot and killed one victim, two others were killed at berkey. so, that is three dead. and then, five are in the hospital. some are with life-threatening injuries. and then, after the incident, police, a short time after that released a photo of who they believed was a con man. and then, sometime after that is when they encountered him, the police officers encountered him and the gunman shot himself according to police so now the whole thing is unde

so first to you, shimon, why is that happening? >> reporter: you heard tyre's step-dad talk about when police came to the house, when they first were told about what happened to tyre and how it was all surrounded by lies, deceit and trying to cover up. that is something that is very clearly the d.a. saying that they're investigating. looking at the initial reports that the police filed that has now surfaced online, there is a huge discrepancy between what actually happened and what we see on the video. as a result of that, as a result of what the family was initially told, the d.a. is now investigating the documents that were filed to see essentially if police were trying to cover up what happened here. and, you know, kamala harris talked about this and others certainly talked about this, about how these officers were not in the pursuit of public safety. i think those were strong words there. and then the other thing, you know, listening to reverend al sharpton talk about how these officers, these black officers beat their brother

at the same time, as shimon said, we have these calls of shots fired.hey are going to keep coming in. so far, police have responded to all of those. none of those have panned out as a new shooting. that can be cause for people who heard the original shots. they said they heard shots, there. hiding that gets transmitted differently. you have got a unified command. so, that means that you have the campus. police who have the lansing pd. we have the state pd. >> who is in charge? >> it would be whoever is designated as the owner of the incident. most likely the campus police. possibly the state police. it is a call that they make on the scene as to who is going to be running the operation. >> i mean i asked is because uvalde of. course as you know too well, are the campusuipping analysts? are they immediately handing it over to the police in the state? >> it is again, they're going to get together decide who is going to make this calls. i think a lot of lessons were learned by uvalde. at the same, time they've staging areas for the ambulances. they've unif

. >> and shimon prokupiez has been there all morning. what exactly happened in court today? >> right. so this is the officers, the five former officers, and it was their initial appearance before the judge here in memphis, and behind me in court here, and they were out on bond, and they walked in. it is essentially a scheduling matter. they waived the reading of the charges against them. then they set some schedules, but the day is about the community and obviously the nichols family to have their opportunity to see these officers, to face these officers really as this case will now continue for months, as this investigation continues. keep in mind, some seven additional officers are under disciplinary review, and other officers could face charges and the district attorney saying they are continuing the investigation, and potentially others could face charges. what else we learned that is significant today is that the d.a. as part of the review and the cases that these five officers were involved in, and they are part of the scorpion unit, and some controversy out there with

shimon prokupecz, appreciate the live reporting. let's get expertise from two law enforcement experts. former deputy director of the fbi, andrew mccray, and juliette ka kayyem. there's a lot we don't know, but here, anthony mcrae, in 2019, arrested, charged with a felony for carrying a concealed weapon. he pleaded to a misdemeanor and once his probation was up, his probation ended in may 2021. so he had a gun charge on his record. may 2021, probation ends, then you hear his sister calling him isolated. his father calling him evil angry after his mother died. why is the system still unable to connect this piece of information with this piece of information and say this man should not have a gun? >> sure, so it comes down to those regulations that are enshrined in the brady act of 1993. that sets the parameters for how background checks are done for gun purposes. michigan is one of most states that relies on the fbi to conduct those background checks. in this case, on the facts that we know from the reporting about this man, the arres

cnn crime and justice correspondent shimon prokupecz is here with us with the latest on the investigation, including details on more new police recordings that will be released. let's start with you there in memphis. war you seeing there? >> victor, tough day. obviously, this is the community's first chance really to come out and try to put their arms around this family. there have been news conferences, but never before have people had the chance to come out and surround this family in love. all of this with an ice storm that's hit the city and made it pretty hard to pass around this town. that's why the funeral had to be t delayed today. but when you think about this, the outside of people protesting last week, this really gave everyone a chance to sort of show up and feel the common pain that so many people talk about. we've had folks fly as far away as l.a. to be here today, to city here in this grief, and talk about how raw the emotions are where they feel like police did wrong by a young man, who was just 29 years old. i look at the picture from inside that funeral, and you can see

shimon. >> yeah, so part of what law enforcement has been doing is trying to figure out what was going on in this gunman's life. so they have talked to the father. they have talked to friends, they have talked to the sister. we here at cnn have talked to his father as well. and certainly, the dad is painting a picture of someone who was very troubled. and he points to the fact that his mother died just about two years ago, and that since then, the gunman has not been the same. but this doesn't really give any more clarity as to the motive here. let me tell you what the dad has been telling reporters and certainly law enforcement. he describes that his son at some point became isolated and evil and angry. and that he was getting more bitter. angry and bitter and that he let himself go, and sort of indications of that was his son stopped cutting his hair, stopped taking care of himself. he even said that his teeth started falling out. so he lived with the dad, but certainly, the dad is painting a picture of someone who was very troubled. other indications of whether or not the dad may ha
