city subways a decade ago and a bit of a surprise from the courtroom, i want to go straight to shimon prokupeczith more on this development. shimon? >> reporter: and the surprise here is that the government has said we're told from court that the judge just sentenced the man who plotted this, behind this blot, almost a decade ago, to blow up the new york city subway at the time, then attorney general called it one of the most serious threats that this country had faced, well, today after being gone for ten years we have not seen him for the last ten years or so, he's been cooperating with the government, providing them highly valuable information, they say. and as a result of that cooperation the judge today sentencing him to time served. that is he won't have to serve any additional jail time, any additional prison time since he's been cooperating with the government, has been in their custody since his arrest for the last ten years. what is really interesting in this investigation is that it is very rare for the government to get this kind of cooperation from a terrorist essentially and they

i want to bring in cnn's shimon prokupecz. and shimon, what does the voice mail from the president's lawyer say? >> that's right, jake. this voice mail transcript of what we have just gotten from the court was just released moments ago. and as you said, you'll recall that this was a voice message that was sent to michael flynn's attorney. that attorney and michael flynn turned it over to the special counsel's office, because there was some concern that perhaps people inside the trump administration, perhaps even his own lawyer, the president's own lawyer, john dowd, was somehow trying to influence michael flynn's cooperation. and let me go ahead and just read this. it's a pretty lengthy voice mail. i'm going to go ahead and just read it to you. it starts out with a call from john dowd to ron kellner, who was michael flynn's lawyer at the time. he says, hey, rob, this is john again. maybe i'm sympathetic. i understand your situation, but let me see if i can't state it in starker terms. if you have, and it wouldn't surprise me if

joining us now just outside the courthouse, cnn crime and justice reporter, shimon prokupecz.ceed? >> reporter: these are very serious charges. one of them really the worst an attorney could face, it's allegations that he stole money, money that was meant for his clients that he went ahead stole it, and it's how he went about doing it. prosecutors say he forged an e-mail, a letter that he sent to the literary agent that was supposed to pay stormy daniels for her book, he forged a letter saying that the money was to go to him directly and then made up all sorts of excuses as to why stormy daniels wasn't going to get that money. in total, it was about $300,000 that prosecutors say he stole from stormy daniels and then the other case, which he's going to appear for later this afternoon, involves nike, where they say that he tried to extort them for $25 million. both these cases moving pretty rapidly. we're going to see him here today appear twice, the first is for the arraignment on the stormy daniels case. that is set to get underway in about an hour. as to that case, of course,

shimon prokupecz, you've been covering this investigation, like me, since the beginning here. we don't know what the statement and how far it's going to be. laura jarrett reporting that it's going to be substantial. we should expect, as a substantial statement now in the investigation into russian interference in the presidential election, how significant a moment is this for the investigation? >> it's a significant moment for the investigation, really, a significant moment for this country. here we are, we're going to finally hear from this man who has been at the center of this investigation, who we have not heard from, has never spoken. all of a sudden now, today, we get word that he's going to speak and given all the buildup, you know, we've been waiting to see if we're going to hear from him in congress, it's clear he does not want to do that. this allows him to control the situation, this lengthy statement. he's going to do it his way and say what he needs to say. a couple of key things, i think, that people need to look for here is whether or not he is united with the d

i want to bring in shimon prokupecz, juliette kayyem and harry litman. thank you all for joining us. shimon, you have covered every twist and turn of this investigation for the last two years. i don't envy you, much closer than i have had to. how stunning is this news, the news of this letter from robert mueller? >> it's pretty stunning when you think about the fact that we have not really heard from robert mueller throughout this entire investigation, throughout in entire process. the only time we have heard from his team is through court records. and what we're seeing here is obvious disagreement from the mueller team, from robert mueller himself in this letter to the attorney general, and it's all about context. it's all about nuance. it's all about how they handled the beginning stages of releasing this report in that four-page letter that was ultimately released where he made the -- the attorney general made some statements that now mueller and his team have disagreed with. and it set the tone. it set the tone in terms of how this went from that day

shimon prokupecz is covering the story. shimon as i said it's fluid. things are changing what is the latest you know. >> officials say there is this is the most devastating day in the history of virginia beach. that tells you everything right there. you can only imagine what the scene must be like inside in building. as you said police just moments ago in a news conference saying that he entered -- the shooter entered building number 2 and just started firing. and it was police, police responded. there were 911 calls. they responded. intercepted him. and that's perhaps how he died in a shootout with police. a police officer was also shot. the police chief there saying he was only saved by his bullet proof vest. so certainly you can just imagine what it must have been like for the police when they got to that scene, hearing the gunshots, trying to find the shooter. they get him and he is now dead. the other thing that we're learning as you said -- the fbi, the atf, other local officials, officials investigators on the sand as they try to go through what

i want to bring in our crime and justice reporter, shimon prokupecz, and our justice reporter, laura jarrett. shimon, i take it we now have the full transcript. >> the full transcript, which is what we've been waiting for. a judge here in d.c. ordering the department of justice to release the entire voice mail message, a transcript of it. this was a message from john dowd, the then personal attorney for the president, to michael flynn's attorney, basically telling him, you know, how the president viewed michael flynn at the time. he wanted information about whether or not michael flynn was cooperating. he suspected that michael flynn was cooperating, and so he -- what happens here is he basically, john dowd, tells flynn's lawyer, hey, the president still views michael flynn in a favorable way. the concern here for the attorney general for michael flynn was that somehow this was being done to affect michael flynn's decision to cooperate. and he said as much to the special counsel's team when they interviewed him. john dowd, the former personal lawyer for the president, just released a

>> cnn crime and justice reporter shimon prokupecz joining us now.notes about the call between the attorney general and special counsel despite the no? >> reporter: quite a shocking response there from the attorney general. certainly you would have thought maybe he would turn around and say let me see what i could do, let me look into it and see if i can provide those to you. especially given all of the issues that have been ongoing with the letter and the fact that he didn't reveal in a mueller had written the letter and didn't reveal until really yesterday there was this phone call. yes, can congress get their hands on it? absolutely. they could ask for it. they can subpoena it. they're still obviously this whole issue before the house, they can vote to subpoena this information. i'm sure there will be follow-up from members of congress requesting this information. ultimately i do think it is probably going to have to be handed over. they are going to have to allow members of congress to see it. and the other thing is for us in the media, we can re

. >> cnnp shimon prokupecz joins our conversation.what the attorney general just said. put it in layman's terms for us. >> it's very rare that we ever get an inside look exactly between the battles between the department of justice, the main justice here in washington, and various attorneys general across the country this. happens where local offices are saying we want to say something and main justice could come in and say you know what. we don't think you have enough here. usually this kind of plays out behind scenes and we are not privy to these kinds of discussions, and before anything like this would ever get public you would think that the offices would kind of work this out and have a good relationship and figure out what can we say publicly about this so that we are aligned, and what we're clearly seeing here is that the special counsel's office and the attorney general are not aligned. they are not on the same page, and that never -- >> on a real important issue, the important issue. >> the biggest -- the most important issue
