let's begin with crime and justice correspondent shimon prokupecz. good morning. we're glad you're here. it's a really significant day. this is a really significant hearing to get the american people those answers they deserve, questions about security failures, all of this. we are learning that one of the officials that is going to testify today is steven sund, the former chief of the u.s. capitol police, and it is expected that he will shift a large part of the blame to some of those that he is testifying with saying across the board intelligence failed. what can you tell us? >> yeah, and what the former chief there, steven sund is referring to, he has spoken out already. he's done interviews with "the washington post," "60 minutes" and laid some of the blame on the sergeant at arms that we're going to hear from, particularly two individuals, one by the name of paul irving and michael sanger. both now former senate sergeant at arms and the house sergeant at arms. and what sund has said publicly is that he went to them and said that he wanted the national guard i

. >> cnn crime and justice correspondent shimon prokupecz is standing by and tracking this. at's the most important thing we're learning? >> reporter: i think the most important thing and what is completely different from what we heard in that senate hearing from the former chief and the two sergeant-at-arms is the acting chief has actually taken a look inside, inward, to see what mistakes the capitol police made that day. a lot of blame has been put on this intelligence. we're going to learn a lot more about that intelligence in the coming weeks. she is taking a very different position, looking at the police actions on that day, specifically when she talked about how the commanders who were supposed to be in charge of what was going on and the police response were on the ground in the middle of the riot fighting off the rioters because so many of the offers were so overwhelmed and it just led to more chaos, there was no command, there was no infrastructure. she said that they did not follow emergency protocol, and that to me seems to be one of the key things from this here t

. >> i want to bring in shimon prokupecz who are our senior crime justice correspondent. that video, shimon, it is so distressing looking at the point of view of the police officers. you can feel your blood pressure rise just watching it. what more are you learning about this specific incident? >> reporter: yeah, it's certainly sickening. when you think about also the fact that this man, 54-year-old thomas webster, he's from here in new york city, the fact that he was a former police officer, protected city hall here in new york city where the mayor obviously works and other government officials and also a former marine, it just makes you wonder how much hate and how much buildup of this rage did these individuals have who came out for this, really, pro-trump riot in the end? that really depicts it. there are thousands of hours of this kind of video that authorities have been sorting through, trying to identify some of these individuals. and in this video, as you see, he was beating this officer with this metal pole, this flat pole that contained a marine corps flag on it

. >> cnn crime and justice correspondent shimon prokupecz is covering this story for us. ions today, shimon, dealt with communication failures that happened on january 6. what happened? >> reporter: yeah, the communication failures. very different kind of hearing today where we had current officials within the capitol police testifying as opposed to the other day where you had all these formers who were kind of pointing fingers at each other and then also pointing fingers at the intelligence. what the acting chief did here today, probably one of the most important things, she admit there were taifailures on the d of the insurrection in protecting the capitol. as you said, brianna, one of those things was communication. she said that emergency protocols were not followed on that day, that the incident command protocols that were in place for such an activity as we saw on the insurrection were not followed, that commanders that were on the ground and were supposed to provide leadership to officers did not do that because they themselves were in the middle of this riot and tr

our crime and justice correspondent shimon prokupecz joins us now with details.t do we know about this investigation? >> certainly, anderson, look, this is going to be really tough on the capitol police who are already reeling from everything that has happened to them and they are being scrutinized in every way. and their internal investigation has now found that at least 35 of their officers, their conduct from that day is questionable. and as a result the police there, the leaders of the police department have decided to suspend six of those officers with pay. they say that right now a total of 35 officers are under investigation for not keeping with the department rules of conduct on the day of their insurrection. of course we have seen video. one officer was seen taking a selfie with one of the rioters. that officer we've reported has been suspended. but again, a lot of people have been questioning some of the activity by those officers in the sense that they have given a lot of the rioters a friendly environment. a lot of those actions are being investigated

sources tell me and my colleague shimon prokupecz the district attorney's office, which is conducting a sweeping criminal investigation into the former president and his company, the trump organization, received these documents on monday just hours after the supreme court blocked the former president's last-ditch effort to block the da's office from obtaining his tax returns. the reason these documents are so critical is that it's not just the tax returns. it's also all the documents that went into the tax returns which gives you some answers potentially about the decision making. that would answer prosecutors' questions about whether there was intent to commit a crime or whether many of these decisions, whether it was on a tax deduction or, you know, valuations for some of these assets was done with sound reasoned advice. this is critical to the investigation. we're told these documents total in the millions of pages. it's not something the da's office is going to get through pretty quickly. this investigation is going to continue on for several weeks if not months. unless they were

ooh input to bring in cnn's shimon prokupecz. this is a person who is identified by tipsters.do you know? >> he was identified by tipsters, video and photos that were sent in by people who were watching what was happening on that day. and that is how the fbi identified him. his name is christian sekora. he is a ucla student. apparently very known to people at the school, and that is what wh -- where some of the tips original nated from. and what the fbi says is that they have information that he is the founder of a group there called -- a student group at the college, named america first bruins. and the fbi is also saying that he's known to follow an extremist ideology and that he invites white nationals to speak at engagements on the campus. so this is someone that is known for perhaps certain ideology, extremist thinking. and this is the information that the fbi received. they also received photos and video of him sitting in the senate chair there on the floor of the senate of the day of the insurrection. they also say that there is a photo of him carrying a blue flag, and a

let's go to shimon prokupecz. >> reporter: keep in mind, wolf, more than 200 defendants now in this caseout 215 now that are in the legal system, that are in the court system. so almost on a daily basis, we're going to see this kind of activity. and, as you said, more than a dozen, about 15 cases today in court. most of them, fighting to get released. a lot of them are being held as they wait their court days. a lot of them don't even have any kind of bail at this point. judges are waiting to decide on whether or not they're going to release them. as you said, one of the people that did have a court appearance today was a woman by the name of jessica watkins. of course, she is alleged to have been one of the leaders in this conspiracy with the oath keepers. also there's a new video that came out showing some of the oath keepers. officials say they are the oath keepers lined up in formation inside the capitol. a big focus, obviously, for investigators is the conspiracy charges and the oath keepers and also keep in mind, wolf, we've not even yet seen all the video that authorities and the

metropolitan police department as well, robert contee, but let's begin with shimon prokupecz on capitol hill. a lot of big questions here. >> reporter: yeah. >> all of the people testifying will get questions about their own role in this. you're hearing there is going to be some finger pointing. >> reporter: it seems that right now based on the information that we have there could be finger pointing in different directions. but jim and poppy, we just received the opening statements from the people who are going to be testifying. and for the first time we are hearing from one of those people, paul irving, he is the house sergeant at arms, the former now, who essentially is part of the team that is in charge of securing the capitol and he's defending his actions that day as well as the others. and what he was saying in this opening statement, what he intends to say is that they have no intelligence to indicate that anyone was going to try and overtake the capitol. and in this opening statement is what he said. let me read it to you. for each of the days leading up to january 6th and indee

let's go straight to cnn crime and justice correspondent jimoan prokupecz. shimon, what are you learning about this? >> yeah, so you have the d.c. attorney general here in the district of columbia here in washington, d.c. that's been looking at some of what the president had said on the day of the insurrection, at the ellipse when he was speaking. the attorney general had said that they were going to be looking at it, but the attorney general has already been investigating the inauguration. remember they've been looking at the finances back from the donald trump inauguration where ivanka trump had to sit for a deposition. so you have the washington, d.c. attorney general and you also have the new york state attorney general which is conducting a civil investigation into the former president's finances and real estate dealings and some of his loans. you also have civil lawsuits that have been filed against the former president while he was in office. and he used the excuse because he was a sitting president he couldn't be sued, he couldn't face any kind of action as

let's go to our crime and justice correspondent, shimon prokupecz, who is over by the capitol gates fornow. shimon, this security goes way beyond the national mall. >> reporter: it does. so, wolf, we're here outside the capitol. i want to show you some of the fencing here that continues, surrounding the entire capitol. you can see the razor wire here. this is still all over the capitol, the complex surrounded with this fencing. and then you can see also, wolf, the national guard still here. you see some of the military vehicles, and then further over here to my right, national guard troops still lining the perimeter of the capitol. so for blocks, really, this entire area still closed off. this, wolf, is one of the checkpoints to get inside the capitol. we've seen lawmakers come in here with security. of course, lawmakers also have extra security. there is concern over threats lawmakers have received. the impeachment managers also have extra security. officials taking nothing for granted as we are going to continue to see this stepped-up security here at the capitol, wolf. >> i've been i
