the new reporting from shimon prokupecz, who has been on the story from the start. >> reporter: people that's correct. >> reporter: it has been three and a half months since the uvalde massacre since the police department left children and teachers alone with the gunman. anger has only grown. the agency had 91 officers who responded. none has lost their job or faced any consequences. dps officials never fully answered any of the lingering questions about its officers actions that day, not to furious parents, to an angry town mayor, or to any reporters until now. >> first of all, there's no cover-up. and the bottom line is as soon as we can, we'll release everything. >> but it needs to be done, sir. the families are starving for information. >> it will be done when the district attorney says so. >> reporter: this week, two officers were suspended with pay. the department said three others will also be investigated. cnn tracked down dps director steven mccraw after obtaining minutes from an internal meeting held in august. these minutes seem to paint a very different picture than the ple

shimon prokupecz spoke with families about their first day back. >> reporter: hugs, high fives and therapy dogs greeting the kids in uvalde, the kids with anxious smiles. are you doing all right? how are you holding up? >> i'm good. >> reporter: you're smiling. are you happy? happy to go back to school? >> uh-huh. >> reporter: nervous? >> yeah, i'm nervous because i'm not used to this school. >> reporter: this is a new school. a.j. was in room 112 at robb watching a movie to celebrate the end of the school year when a gunman entered his classroom. killing 19 of his classmates and two of his teachers. he dove under backpacks trying to hide but was shot tlur his upper leg. his limp has all but disappeared. trying to get back to normal a life? >> yeah. >> reporter: and deciding what to wear for the first day at his new school, a.j. chose a shirt with a photo of the friends and teachers that he lost. his wounds may slowly heal, but the emotional toll will be harder to overcome. >> scared more for my kids. all the teachers and students that are coming back. that is all i'm worried about. >> rep

>> cnn's shimon prokupecz on the scene for us. shimon, thank you very much.uss what's going on with the uvalde county commissioner, ronald garza. commissioner, thank you so much for joining us. how did it feel today in uvalde seeing these children return to school for the first time since the shooting? >> wolf, good to be on your show. there was anticipation and anxiety. i know some parents were expressing uncertainty. but i know for a fact that for the last month our dedicated teachers and school administrators have been preparing for this day. and as far as i know, everything went well today. >> that's good to hear. are the schools in uvalde, commissioner, actually ready to care for these young kids who lived through that massacre? many of them of course still traumatized as you just heard. now they have to go to an entirely new school. robb elementary school has been shut down. what do you think? >> well, i think the school district did what they had to do. the support services are there, wolf. you know, robb elementary is no l longer there for the student

. >> cnn's shimon prokupecz is live. for now, shimon, parents and kids will take that walk or drive to school for the first time. >> reporter: and as you guys point out, certainly a different kind of anxiety and anticipation for the first day of school here in at uvalde. school delayed here for several weeks as the school district work to implement new security measures. you can see this fence behind me. this was not here from the massacre at robb elementary. it's something new that the school put in place to give a feeling of safety to the parents. as you say, parents will be walking their kids through the doors at the school in anticipation, sort of this concern over safety. and the concern over the fact, whether or not their kids will feel safe. whether or not they'll be in an environment where they can learn. and this was something that was on top of mind here, by many of the school officials. >> kick is up. >> reporter: the sights and sounds of back to school have begun in uvalde. >> he's got the block with the quart

. >> shimon prokupecz is back in uvalde, where he's been covering this since the tragedy. , it is impossible for any of us to put ourselves in the shoes of these parents, students, teachers. i wonder what you're hearing from them this morning as we see these images. >> reporter: so, we're outside here, this is flores elementary. this is where many of the students who were at school on may 24th when the shooting took place, this is where they're coming. this is fifth grade. they were in fourth grade at the time. and so fifth graders are now coming to this school. and we got to see some of them as they were coming here this morning. and it is remarkable to see the kids smiling, the resilience, the resiliency here and the resilience of these kids is so empowering and so incredible to see. some of them are just so happy to be back at school. i got a chance to see a.j. this morning, one of the kids i've been following, he actually was shot in the leg. he was smiling this morning. he got a new haircut. and i asked him how happy are you to be back? and he said i'm so happy to be b

. >> joining us now is cnn crime and justice correspondent shimon prokupecz, who is live in uvalde and has been covering this story since the shooting. shimon, tell us, what is the mood like on the ground. how are the students and parents feeling? >> reporter: there has been a lot of anxiety certainly, brianna, leading up to this day as we heard from that parent in the last hour, saying that he certainly had anxiety about bringing his kids to school. and one of those schools that he talked about is where we are at now, flores elementary school here. because you're not seeing that security fencing that the school board told us they would be putting up at some of the schools. this school does not have that security fencing. and so that has certainly troubled some of the parents. the kids who are at robb elementary, the victims of that horrible day who survived that shooting, some of them are going to be coming to this school. we already have seen parents arriving here, going to -- driving to the curb here and they have been greeted by school staff and then they're walked inside the schoo

cnn's shimon prokupecz has more. >> reporter: john and brianna, the texas department of public safety not revealing why these officers are now under formal investigation with the inspector general, these five injuries and these two officers who have now been suspended with pay. the agency is now releasing or giving up any information as to why they have taken this step, but we know that 91 department of public safety officers were on scene on may 24th, some of them inside robb elementary, many of them outside, you know, much of the blame for what police didn't do that day has been placed on the now fired school police chief pete arredondo. many here criticize the head of the department of public safety for coming out and placing all that blame on one individual and now it seems that there has been some indications here that something has turned up in the internal investigation that the department of public safety has been conducting which has now forced them to have this formal investigation and then suspending these two officers with pay. john, brianna? >> shimon, thank you for that
