i'm shimon prokupecz with cnn. thank you, sir. and so phil and poppy, this is the story here all night that they are getting phone calls, people are hearing things and dialing 911. and the officers are responding. so it is a pretty tense situation out here. certainly people on edge. we've been here for about an hour, hour and a half now. and we've not seen many people outside. we're seeing cars, people driving cars like it would be any other morning. you see this woman here walking her dogs. the police just leaving. so perhaps she feels a level of safety knowing that the police were just here. but it is certainly progressively -- i think as the day goes, it will get more tense as daylight comes, more officers will be arriving and certainly we expect that the searching here will certainly escalate as the day goes on. >> remarkable we haven't had a lot of information coming out since the last press conference several hours ago and the next press conference scheduled for 10:30. and while he couldn't comment on much, we appreciate the

things are calm. >> all right, shimon prokupecz, keep us posted. imon is literally following the manhunt as it moves through this area. let us know when you end up somewhere else. let's get right to cnn anchor and cnn chief correspondent pamela brown. pamela, i do understand you're getting new information about this suspect and a current working theory in the investigation. >> it is a working theory among law enforcement officials right now. they try to sort out why the subject robert card targeted these two locations. and a law enforcement official says at working theory that card recently broke up with a longtime girlfriend and these were the two places that the couple frequented. she was apparently supposed to be there for a tournament, there was a corn hole tournament at that bar. and that is one particular reason why he targeted the two locations because this is a place that he frequented with his ex-girlfriend. but we also know, and a family member confirmed that he had an acute mental health episode over the summer. he was hearing voices. and

. >> i want to go right now to cnn's shimon prokupecz who is at lewiston city hall. shimon, you have been following this story as you do from the very beginning. there was just a press conference, you were there with officials. what did we learn? >> so here's what we know. here's a little bit of a time line. it was around 7:45 this evening when police made the discovery of the suspect's body. they confirm it was a self-inflicted gunshot wound. he was discovered while police were searching this area in lisbon, and they found his body. and i want to note to you, laura, this is an area we were at yesterday. we were out on the streets of lisbon yesterday following the police, doing their search. and around 3:00 yesterday we saw them searching this area. today it appears they went back there, and during that search today they found the body. and that is all we really know. police would not answer any other questions. but i think the most important thing obviously to highlight here is that the fear that has been gripping so many communities across maine is now over, and tha

he spoke to shimon prokupecz earlier this morning. his main two messages are clear as he repeated it over and over, if you see something suspicious call and this is still a very active scene in lisbon. joining us is cnn justice correspondent evan prez. analyst and former deputy director of the fbi, andy mccabe. and former secret service agent jonathan lacklow. very clear from what we just heard is for the police in lisbon that this man is not caught. could not have made it more clear this is very active and they are seeking help and information from the public. what do you think of this now more than 12 hours in ? >> yeah. on the one hand it's a good sign they're continuing to try to crowd source as much intelligence as they can because they are clearly still searching for investigative leads here. on the other hand it's not a great time they still need that kind of assistance. nevertheless, they're doing the right thing. they could probably enrich the information they're getting from the public if they shared a few more details about

shimon prokupecz is also on the scene. we have two different angles on this from two different teams on the ground. shimon, talk a little bit about what we know about this suspect and what we know about this location that they are at. >> right. so this is believed to be one of the residences of the home of the suspect. and at this point, based on the way law enforcement is behaving, the way they're conducting is they don't feel that there is any kind of imminent danger, right. they don't believe that there are any hostages inside. they don't believe anyone inside, at least at this point just on the way their posture and what they're doing, they're not even 100% certain that there is even anyone inside. and they're certainly not certain that it is a suspect. but everything that we're seeing here is to a high degree just precautions, because they know if this is the suspect, they're dealing with a potentially very dangerous situation, someone who is trained, someone who perhaps will put up a fight. right now for them it's ab

>> cnn's shimon prokupecz has this update on what officials are saying about a possible motive. >> police releasing more information than they have for several days. they said they were able to do that because the suspect in this case is dead. the shooter is dead. so what they tell us is that they're leaning towards mental health issues as one of the motivations behind this shotting. they say that the shooter was hearing voices. he believed that people were talking badly about him at these locations that he targeted. they say they also found a note and in that note, they didn't describe it as a suicide note, but certainly what this shooter talked about and what he was telling family members sort of gave the impression that when this note was found, that the shooter thought he'd be dead and in that note, he talked about bank accounts. information for his bank accounts. he talked about his cell phone. the pass code for his cell phone that family members would be able to access and all of this is happening as law enforcement and the fbi and other law enforcement officials are continuing to p

cnn's senior crime and justice correspondent shimon prokupecz in maine with the latest on this. of warning signs here, shimon. >> reporter: yeah, certainly raising all kinds of questions, right, john? whether or not perhaps authorities could have ultimately stopped this from happening. it's certainly something that has law enforcement officials all across this state and really across the country concerned about this. you know, whether these signs were missed, whether more aggressive action should have been taken by the local sheriff's office where the shooter lived. so what we've learned is that when the national guard became concerned about information that they had received about the shooter, they notified the local sheriff's office in saga dau county. joe merry is the sheriff there, they called his office and he dispatched one of his sergeants to investigate. over the course of several days they did investigate, they want to his home, initially he wasn't there, but there's new information indicating that he may have been at the home and, in fact, the sergeant from the sheriff'

shimon prokupecz, andy mccabe thanks to both of you. appreciate it. great relief that the community is feeling that, at the same time still grappling with the losses of 18 very important people of their family and their communities, lost to this gunman. all right, now to our other breaking story. overseas, the escalating situation in israel's war with hamas, the idf now says it has soldiers inside of gaza. entering the enclave during the cover of night. the scope of current activities remains unclear, but it does not appear yet to be the expected major offensive deep into the hamas-controlled territory. and it comes after intense, sustained aerial attacks rocking gaza overnight. let's go straight to cnn's jeremy diamond in sturat. what are you seeing right there? >> reporter: well, what we have been hearing over and seeing over the last hour or so is continued aerial bombardment of gaza, artillery fire outgoing from very close to our position. and we also just saw moments ago a barrage of rocks fired from gaza towards cities in israel, including where

shimon prokupecz is tracking that outside the court building in lower manhattan. were down there six months ago when trump made a similar trip, if you will, to be arrested after his first criminal indictment. what are you seeing there today? >> reporter: right. and at that time this was a much more secure area, there was a lot more security, remember, it was really his first criminal court appearance and he was just -- it was just a block or so away from here, two blocks or so down this way is where he made that appearance where he went to the district attorney's office to surrender. this is now at 60 center street, this is the civil court, the civil supreme court, and viewers looking at this courthouse may find it familiar because it's very famous. many movies, "law and order" something that has been shot here. what won't happen is that there trump will not be taking the 32 steps up into the courthouse. what we believe is going to happen is he's going to be entering here on the side on pearl street. there is an entrance here, there's secret service agents and nyp

i want to catch up with shimon prokupecz who has been actually trying to follow where the manhunt is ing. shimon, you're on the side of the road somewhere. tell me what you're seeing. >> reporter: well, what happened was, we got word they were doing a search where we were before. in the last hour, they had some dogs out, bloodhounds, and perhaps they may have gotten a hit and they went and started doing some searches. and they did the searches and now the law enforcement officials are back here at the school. this is where this is sort of a command post, john. where they've been setting up. when they go up, they line up here. and then there's like heavily armed vehicles, an ambulance and a couple of teams and they go all out. and there's an atv, presumably, to search through the woods. but this has been a staging area here all day. so, if they do go out and search, if they get a tip or call or something, they will leave from here and go do the searches. that's what we saw earlier. it looks like they were just coming back from doing one of those searches. some of the roads, john, i wan

cnn's shimon prokupecz is joining us now. what are you learning, shimon? >> well, you know, wolf, this just gets worse and worse. and really just heartbreaking for the family members as new information comes out indicating that more and more this could have been prevented. that there were many and many warning signs and now we're learning that in july, that the military ordered that the shooter not have access to weapons or ammunition and of course, all of this we're just learning. this is just coming in. we're also have learned that back in september, the police were at his house. there was a concern that the military had back then over his behavior and his mental health illness and what was going on in his life that they called the local police in his neighborhood where he lives and they asked him to go to his house and check on him. they did but they say they couldn't find him. at one point, they thought he was home but that's not entirely clear. obviously that also is raising questions because what exactly were police doing to find him to sort of deal

i'm joined by correspondent shimon prokupecz live in lewiston.hat are the next steps in the investigation? >> reporter: they're still clearing the crime scenes. we're outside the bar where one of the shootings occurred. investigators are still here going over evidence, collecting the remaining pieces of evidence they have to collect for their investigation and then really working towards more about the history of the shooter, the investigators trying to piece together the days leading up to this, what was going on in his life. they revealed there were some mental health issues. they're investigating that. they also say that he bought the weapons, some of them in the last several days. they recovered three weapons, two with him inside the trailer and then the long rifle potentially the one used in this horrific crime in his car. there also is a note. they found this note. they released some more details about that note, saying there's information in there that he left for a loved one. here's the police official discussing that. >> what it is, is i

to update you on something we saw a few minutes ago, shimon prokupecz, we saw a presence at a farm less that be one mile where the suspect's car was last found. you can see some video of what we were just look ing at moment ago. shimon tells us they were investigating a tip, some of the more than 530 tips that have come into law enforcement over the last 40 plus hours now. they got a tip. someone at the farm reported they heard something that so sounded like a gunshot. law enforcement went there and is checking it out right now. it goes to show you where this investigation is at this moment. mainly, that there is still a manhunt underway for robert card, who is still believed to be armed and dangerous. there's still this shelter in place situation for some 700 square miles, including tens of thousands of people. and the only update that we have from law enforcement is what they will be doing today, which involves more search ises like the one you're seeing on the screen now as tips come in, but also focusing on some specific areas, including primarily the river where that car was found.

let's bring in shimon prokupecz in new york. what are you hearing about this?we're just outside the u.n. where some of the family members and u.n. dignitaries from the israeli delegation are meeting inside then they're expected to come out here and speak. some of them are showing up here now. i just want to show you what's happening here outside. we're seeing photos of all those that were kidnapped all around this plaza and then over this way, they've actually placed shoes near the names and the posters of those who were kidnapped. to symbolize they're human. these shoes are being used to symbolize them. these are not shoes that belong to those that were kidnapped but the organizers here felt this was something to do to humanize those that were kidnapped. they're here today calling attention to their kidnapping. obviously, their release, and they just want people to realize what so much of this is about and so they're meeting here with u.n. officials. the israeli delegation. and they're expected to meet with city officials later then momentarily we do expect to

. >> and want to get straight to shimon prokupecz who is on the scene in lisbon, maine. you have been speaking to sources up there all morning. and of course last night. what are you hearing about any aspect of how close they are to the suspect? >> reporter: well, it doesn't appear at least on the ground or from any information that we're getting from authorities that they are any closer to capturing the suspect at this point. they know where he left his car. they have his car. but where he went after that, if they know, they are not saying. they have told everyone to stay indoors because they are worried for people's safety indicating, you know, for most people here who are worried for their safety that they don't know where he is. and really law enforcement not really giving much information as to whether they think that perhaps he went after he dumped his car. did he use another car to somehow get away. the area where they have been searching for him is a wooded area, but we're not seeing the law enforcement presence that we normally see when there is a manhunt. they

shimon prokupecz has been in the middle of the manhunt in nearby lisbon. shimon, what can you tell us? >> reporter: poppy, i am standing at that boat launch that fil phil was talking about. police last night found the person of interest, where they found his car and that sort of kicked off this manhunt. >> this is kind of the area that police are searching. what they are doing is mostly responding to 911 calls. people are calling 911 to say they hear things, to say that there is an open door. we were present in one of those situations where there was a 911 call. police responded and they did a search and they found nothing. but certainly people here in lisbon are on edge. they have been told to stay home. school is closed. they have been told if they don't have to go to work, not to go to work. many of the stores are expected to be closed as well. we got a chance to speak to the police chief, the lisbon police chief, who talked to us about some of the things they have been going through, through the night. take a listen to that. >> there is a lot of -- invo

cnn's shimon prokupecz is there. all nypd forces have been ordered to show up in uniform tomorrow. in the meantime, you are at a college campus looking at the protests that are happening. . >> reporter: yeah, we are outside of brooklyn college. here's the sight of wasn't of these protests. we have supporters of palestine. this is the group from the college here. they are called the brooklyn college students for justice and palestine. that's just about 100 of them gathered here outside the campus. they came together because they were angry over statements that were made by the college president in support of israel. so they wanted to gather here to show their support for palestine. they are against what's happening. you can see some of the signs here on this side. let me just show some of the signs on this side. the bombing of children is not self-defense. we're hearing chants like that from this side saying free palestine. then on the other side. just about a handful or so on this side. the college is open. there are students you can see coming through here leaving the campus going

tonight our shimon prokupecz is reporting that the maine national guard had asked local police to check on that reservist, who ended up killing 18 people, prior to the shooting after a soldier became concerned that this eventual gunman would snap and commit a mass shooting. it sounds like warning signs were missed. how does this get fixed? >> jim, i know what's happening in maine all too familiar. we had the same issue at marjory stoneman douglas and parkland. the warning signs of the former student were everywhere, killing animals, police coming to the house dozens of times, tips to the fbi. he had a file at the school board a mile long. everyone knew that that kid was in trouble. and yet people who are mentally ill in this country can go and get a weapon. and here in in the state of florida, we stopped that. we passed red flag laws. we raised the age to 21. within three weeks on a bipartisan basis, signed by republican governor rick scott. now u.s. senator rick scott. to make sure that something like that didn't happen again. so, it's deeply troubling, jim. we have to figure out in th

shimon prokupecz joins me live from new york.hat are we hearing from law enforcement sources across the country? >> reporter: the thing that is concerning most of the law enforcement officials looking at chatter, most of it coming from online folks, people discussing what's going on in israel and perhaps wanting to take advantage of that situation, and the concern is what they don't know. it's that person suting at home who is viewing video, who is taking in all this information and perhaps will react. so what law enforcement is doing all across the country is a lot of what we're not seeing. there are reenforcement officers here in new york city who are mobilizing at police headquarters just waiting just in case if something happens. here later in times square, there's going to be a much larger presence of officers here as they get ready for a rally that's supposed to take place at 3:00. just here in times square. so we will see more law enforcement. there are law enforcement officers all just on standby just in case something ha

cnn's shimon prokupecz is on the scene in lisbon, maine. i know that you have been talking to law enforcement and you are now physically near where the alleged gunman's vehicle was found, where law enforcement is searching and really intense ways. what are you learning? >> we were heading to the area where the car was left at the boat latch, because that's where they are going to be doing the searching. while we are on our way there, we saw the police racing to this area where we are. because they got a tip of the loud noise. people who work, this is a lettuce farm here. thought they heard a gunshot and so police swarmed this area. they were searching all back here and into the woods to make sure that there was no one in there and just a short time ago, the police chief here in lisbon came out and iniffished their searches and said they found nothing. they cleared this area. but the point of this is just to show how on edge this community is. they are calling 911 when they are seeing something, when they are hearing something, and police ar
