>> reporter: yes, good morning, shirleen and ken. usually around 5:00 this morning you would see yogers, power walkers coming in. that is not the case today. you can see by the fence behind me here. as promised, we want to show you maybe how you can get a glimpse of the pope in his fiat if you don't have tickets to one of these coveted events like madison square garden or today in central park. take a look at this map. we will show you the way that he is supposedly coming along. the pope with his entourage, his motorcade enters through 72nd street, continue through the park and at some point he will switch into the popemobile which has the glass and the open sides that we have seen so much here. and he will continue through the park and likely exit on 7th avenue, go through time's square on his way to madison square garden. that may be another opportunity besides 72nd where you can possibly see him in his fiat. as for the security where i am at central park, we were here early this morning while they were putting the last few hundred

shirleen you said it right, he has a busy day on tap. the pope's first full day in new york will be jam packed in fact. at 8:30 this morning, he will address the u.n. general assembly. at 11:30, he will be here at the 9/11 memorial and museum. visit our lady queen of angels school in east harlem. at 5:00 tonight, 10,000 ticketed guests will be in central park for the pope's motorcade. then tonight it ends with mass at madison square garden. there are closures around msg, penn station will remain open for commuters. that is some good news. still expect delays. in the meantime, the pope will cover 54 miles on the ground before he leaves new york heading back to rome and the vatican. today he will cover a lot of that ground. in all, his trip to new york will be minutes, just shy of 40 hours. we have three reports, live reports to bring you on the pope's arrival in new york and his busy day ahead. eyewitness news reporter dray clark is live on the upper east side. kala rama is live in central park. we start with n.j. burkett outside the u.n.

i'm shirleen allicot. >> i'm david novarro. a long island dad facing charges of attacking another driver during a road rage incident on the meadow brook state parkway. the man's 2-year-old child was in the car when the assault happened. >> long island reporter kristin thorne is at criminal court in hempstead. >> reporter: he went before judge a short time ago. he beat this victim to the point of unconsciousness. police say hinten forced this other driver on to the side of the meadow brook state parkway yesterday afternoon and proceeded to run up to the window and beat the 27-year-old man in the head causing a fractured jaw, nose, and cheek. his family, hinton's family was in court this morning. according to court papers the victim told police he was driving north on the meadowbrook state parkway around old country road when he accidentally cut off hinton's car. hinton began to drive erratically and yelled at the victim he had a child in his car. he says hinton forced him off the road. the victim rolled down his window to apolog

shirleen allicot in lower manhattan now with more details on plan. shirleen? >> reporter: david and liz, it's astonishing right now, there's no easy way for a parent to find out if a daycare center they're about to send their child to has had this new bill will help parents make the right choice and cut out the red tape. it all comes after the death of 3-month-old carl town doe this past summer, his mother took him to sew hoe child care on the recommendation of people in the neighborhood. sadly the baby died during a midday nap. his first day away from his mother. police say the daycare center was unlicensed and who found the baby blue lipped and unresponsive tried to give him cpr. but wasn't trained in life- saving procedure which officials say is required of licensed providers. it happened in councilman shin's district and she joined forces with vaca to introduce a billment this would require the city to publish reports listing the names and addresses of daycare centers that have been shut down or given cease and desist orders because they were unlicensed. >

eyewitness news reporter shirleen allicot explains. >> reporter: just days before the labor day holiday kicks off, new footage captures three great whites off the coast of cape cod. >> we have already seen as many sharks this year as we did last year. >> reporter: in the past, just one sighting was enough to threaten to close the beaches. marine biologists are tracking nearly two dozen of them along a 10-mile stretch off the coast of cape cod on monday alone. just a few weeks ago the atlanta white shark conservancy captured this scene, a hungry great white trying to catch a seal. with the holiday weekend approaching, lifeguards are now calling for higher towers, purple watch flags, possibly even a spotter plane to keep an eye out for great whites. so far no shark attacks yet this summer on the cape and the beaches are open for labor day. >> they are fun to look at from the shore. i wouldn't get any closer than i had to of the shore. >> reporter: swimmers beware. >>> what lessons were learned about public safety communications in superstorm sandy? that is the question that new jersey con

. >> i'm lori stokes in for shirleen allicot. we start with an eyewitness news exclusive. the mta bus driver accused of driving a bus on long island while he was drunk is talking to us about his arrest. >> alexander copeland was arraigned in court. kristin thorne has the exclusive interview. >> reporter: alexander copeland tells me simply he doesn't remember anything that happened that day. he said before he took the bus, he apparently suffered a concussion and he doesn't remember anything before or after that happened. morning as copeland went before a judge in hempstead on aggravated dbi charges. he went into work from his home in suffolk county only to find out he didn't have to work that day. he tells me he fell at the bus depot in queens and doesn't remember anything. later on that afternoon, drivers called 911 reporting seeing an mta bus swerving erratically all over the northern state parkway around exit 32. a trooper pulled over copeland, gave him a breathalyzer that registered a .20 blood alcohol content. copeland tells me he didn't drink that day and he is happy
