. >> shirleen allicot is live with the details. >> reporter: bill, what a frightening ride for two innocent people minding their own business, riding the c- train slashed at random by a total stranger. thankfully, tonight, those two victims will be just fine. as we take a look at the ralph avenue stop, service has just resumed. this afternoon, two victims were heading toward manhattan on the c-train, when it made a stop at ralph avenue. that's when a man in his 30s randomly slashed them on the left side of their faces. both were taken to the hospital. police say they did not know each other, nor did they know the suspect. police caught up with him and found the weapon he used. as you can imagine, this has caused delays both the a and c lines going in both directions. one woman having to on to opt for the bus this evening. >> it does scare me. getting on the train, it's getting dark out. if it was a random attack, you know, that is quite scary. >> reporter: still no word on a motive for those stabbings, again, those two victims were not hurt, non-life-threatening injuries. and c service has

shirleen allicot is in the newsroom with the breaking details. shirleen? >> reporter: this standoff has been going on for at least four hours now david. it's created a major threat to the community as you can in place and as you mentioned, it does continue to affect flights at the airport. police say they were responding to a domestic violence call when they suddenly had to duck for cover. the gunfire coming from an apartment complex on branch street in the little italy section. this is less than two miles away from the airport. in fact the complex is located under the airport's approach path. right now, planes are not being allowed to land at san diego international but the departing flights are being allowed to take off. residents in neighboring apartments have been evacuated. other residents are being asked to shelter in place. >> at this point, we feel we have the scene contained and the suspect isolated. but what we don't want is people coming out of their homes half a block or a block down the street and coming out on the street thinking it's okay ou

eyewitness news reporter shirleen allicot has the story. >>reporter: 32-year-old nina says she wasn't comfortable at first of her husband posting a craigslist ad to find her a kidney donor. >> i'm a very private person and i didn't like that idea to put out this story and i also didn't want people to feel bad >>reporter: but kay felt helpless. nina went into kidney failure more than a year ago due to an auto immune disease. she needs dialysis three times a week. he figured a post on craigslist was worth a shot. somehow that post popped up when glenn of new jersey was searching for construction supplies. >> out of no where, this is an ad looking for a brave person and it just -- not that i thought i was a brave person, i was wondering what they were looking for. >>reporter: when he realized it was for a kidney, it hit home. his first wife jessica also had kidney failure. she waited two years for a transplant. she received a kidney and a pancreas from a cadaver, but her body later rejected the organs. she died in 2011. >> when he felt my pain

. >> and i'm lauren glassberg in for shirleen allicot. we begin this half hour with new information about a thief church. >> that criminal caught on surveillance cameras breaking into a donation box inside a this in smithtown. now police are looking for the thief. n.j. burkett is live outside the nj? >> reporter: well, that's right lauren, the fourth police precinct here in hauppauge, long island where police are now appealing to the public for help. you're going to see in the video the man actually sits in the pew for quite a while. waiting for worshipers to leave. it looks like he's praying. but police say he's really waiting for the worshipers to leave the sanctuary. you know, it's amazing he actually sits there for an hour before he gets up and pries open the donation box. in this case, lauren, not only the entire incident. it happened at st. patrick's roman catholic church up in smith town where the man anybody. harm. -- bag over his arm. people. he's looking at the people. and then when the people go, he gets up, he looks around aga

. >> shirleen allicot is outside the store for us with more. >> absolutely heartbreaking. i spoke to damian francis' mother who says he was the type of guy who went out of his way to help his neighbors but helping ended up costing him his life. >> he has a nice heart. he loved to help people. >> reporter: and sadly that's what took the life of this 32-year-old beloved son and father of one. surveillance video shows damian francis when two men walk in with the intention to rob the place. one of the men in the red hooded sweatshirt was armed. when francis saw what was going on, he tried to diffuse the situation. that's when he was shot in the chest. >> i started to cry. i just cried for like two days straight. i couldn't eat anything. it was just too sad. >> reporter: after francis was shot, the man reaches over the counter, takes the money out of the register and the two suspects ran off. peggy hernandez owns the furniture store right next door. she says what happened here is a much deeper problem in the community. >> i think they need to do a mandatory work program for all
