shirleen, ken over to you. 6:02. we are learning more about a breaking story in the bronx, a huge fire injuring people including firefighters and forcing nearly 100 people out of their homes. >> the fierce flames quickly gutted nine homes before firefighters put it under control. eyewitness news reporter rob nelson is live in the tremont section with more. >> reporter: shirleen you can see behind me this is still a very active scene. firefighters still up on those ladder trucks battling this fire from the air more than six hours after it started. the good news is that the fire was brought under control about three hours after it started. the bad news is that 89 people have been displaced by this, including 15 children. the video from overnight shows just how a dramatic a fire this was, able to spread so quickly homes that are so very close together. most of them are wood frames making matters worse. it took about 200 firefighters and three hours to bring this blaze under control here an valentine avenue. there were n

i'm david novarro. >> i'm shirleen allicot. we begin this half hour with new details about the suffolk county police chief arrested by fbi. >> jamesburg is facing federal assault charges, long island reporter kristin thorne live outside the federal courthouse in central islip with more on this story. >> reporter: dave and shirleen, this is the federal indictment just unsealed against former suffolk county police chief james burke. it sames burke assaulted a suspect in his custody who was handcuffed at the time. it also says burke pressured his officers to lie to authorities who were assault. the fbi arrested 51-year-old james burke at had his mother's home this morning and brought mehlville for processing. burke had been with the suffolk county police department for he resigned in october he said to be with his family and for personal reasons. prosecutors say in 2012 burke assaulted 28-year-old christopher lobe. lobe had stolen burke's gun belt and other items from burke's department issued vehicle which was parked in his drive

let's get the latest from eyewitness news reporter shirleen allicot in corona tonight. shirleen? >> reporter: joe, that investigation continues. the scene is still very active. in fact, that cement truck is still on the scene and not removed. the entire intersection has been shut down as they take evidence with a data collector that will help reconstruct how the accident happened. as far as what happened, we are told the driver of the truck was going southbound on junction boulevard, turning right on to 55th avenue. that is when a woman and two children were hit. the woman we are told is more seriously hurt than the children. all of them were taken to elmhurst hospital. there is blood on the scene there, a pair of sneakers under the tire. a difficult scene to see. we are hoping the victims are okay. as for the driver, we are told police are interviewing him and no charges have been filed yet. we did speak to one witness who was quite shaken up. she sprang into action when the accident happened. >> i ran or there and -- over there and i noticed a lady on the floor with one leg --

. >> shirleen, liz as you said this was a chase that started in the bronx, ended in yonkers. now you have multiple agencies in the death of an unarmed suspect. it all started around 11:45 this morning in riverdale. a patrol car from the 50th precinct tried to pull over a gray nissan at 242nd street and broadway. the car took off, headed north on the henry hudson parkway. that becomes the sawmill river parkway at the county line. near exit 4 in yonkers that nissan crashed. police arrested one person but a second suspect climbed through the window and ran into tibbets brook park. police say there was a confrontation and an nypd the suspect. as we said it started with that chase. it ended with the suspect's car actually traveling in the wrong direction at one point. >> at some point nypd lost contact and for whatever reason, whether they saw other police vehicles ahead, they made a u-turn and came southbound in the northbound lane colliding with several other civilian vehicles. >> reporter: now investigators have not yet had a chance to speak with the officers direct witnesses t

i'm shirleen allicot. topping headlines at this hour, a 62-year-old woman is dead in the most recent crash involving a pedestrian and an mta bus. it happened last night in sheepshead bay brooklyn the driver was making a left turn on to east 17th street from avenue z. eleanorashilinka was crossing the street at the time. she is the fourth pedestrian hit and killed by a city bus in the last six weeks. the nypd is cracking down on vision zero violations this week near senior centers. >> after a final vote today the scores that new york students get on state exams will no longer count in the evaluations given to their teachers. state board of regents members support a four-year moratorium test scores. the legislature had voted earlier to actually increase the weight of those test scores and teacher evaluations. but an unofficial vote yesterday showed the regents are united in throwing out that policy. when we come back we'll take a >>> welcome back, let's get a check on that commute with debbie duhaime. >> tha

. >>> hello again, i'm shirleen allicot. >> and i'm lauren glassberg in for david novarro. weaver getting new details about a string of jewelry store thefts in manhattan. >> police releasing new surveillance videos of criminals in action. the latest robbery on wednesday. eyewitness news reporter rob nelson is live in midtown with details. >> good afternoon, these guys have hit three stores just in the last four months including most recently as you said right here behind me at madison jewelers each time making a pretty easy get away. >> police are now calling this a robbery spree targeting midtown jewelry stores with three incidents dating back to september. the most recent robbery took p.m. at madison jewelers on broadway, which you can see on surveillance video. one of the men uses a small gun to demand jewels and watches and fled with the items. and then back on october 9th. police say the same two men targeted kenjo jewelry store on west 57th street where one suspect brandishes a handgun and demands merchandise from employees. they fled with an unknown number of watches
