washington correspondent trevor shirley has those details. lawmakers say part of the problem isn't just stopping people from taking fentanyl. >> but from cutting off the illegal supply lines that are getting this drug into the country in the first place, that's the focus of a senate hearing today. fentanyl, a synthetic opioid is blamed for fueling the opioid epidemic and causing thousands of overdose deaths a year according to the dea, mexico and china are the 2 biggest producers and illegal export ers of fentanyl. officials say much of what ends up in the u.s. is trafficked here illegally from those 2 countries. at today's hearing, lawmakers are questioning dea officials as well as narcotics experts from the state department. there's bipartisan agreement within the senate that more needs to be done to stop the fentanyl from getting into the u.s.. but also more effort made to get the governments of countries like mexico and china to crack down on the drugs, illegal production within their own borders. dea administrator anne milgram says once
