what we have learned is at least one shooter is down, and as of now, there are no more shooters. two people are reported dead. 24 more injured. as you can imagine, even though it is a sunday in las vegas, it is still a very festive scene. a lot of concerts, lot of venues, lot of people on the strip. that is a very different scene at this hour according to our reporters on the ground. we have the story covered for you. we want to begin with nbc correspondent steve patterson who's been there throughout the course of this ordeal. steve, why don't you bring us up to speed on what you've seen over the last couple hours since this incident began to unfold. where are you in relation to the reports of the active shooter at the music festival? >> reporter: this is the corner of tropicana and las vegas boulevard. as probably a central location as you can get on the vegas strip. there are obviously the famous casinos, mgm, tropicana behind me. back at the tropicana, this building here, where we are, this active police scene where you see people combing the streets here, stretchers, ambulanc

think that it could be multiple shooters they think that the shooter was shooting from on top of the mandalay bay which if you view a group will search las vegas strip photos you'll know that the top of the mandalay bay is where a lot of those photos go out because there's actually a restaurant up there that has one of the most beautiful views of the of the city so i don't know if they were at on that balcony or if they're on top of the casino but what i do you know based on the other videos that i haven't seen on the news is that they just sounded like they were shooting a gun for a good two three minutes nonstop what about the people the victims of this attack you mentioned there are already two fatalities are confirmed and we have a number of injured those being those who are injured have they been taken to hospital are they being treated or our emergency services on the ground yes of course according to metro's twitter page it looks like at least twenty one people have been escorted to hospital so a lot of these victims are on a route or already at the hospitals one of the people

among the dozens of guns found belonging to the shooter the federal atf says 12 of the guns in the shooter's hotel room had what are called bump fire stocks or bump stocks. >> what are the modifications associated with the weaponry? i can't give you an answer on whether any of them are automatic or not, but we are aware of a device called a bump stock, and that enables an individual to speed up the discharge of ammunition. >> now, a total of 47 guns have been found, purchased in four different states. on semiautomatic weapons the trigger has to be pulled each time a round is fired. an automatic the trigger can be pulled and held once to fire multiple rounds. there is a slight loophole, if they're federally registered and made prior to 1986. but it is legal to buy these tools like these bump stocks. up to hundreds of rounds per minute. gun reform advocates seizing on this latest revelation about t las vegas attack. one tweeting i'm looking at ways to proceed with registration to ban bump fire stocks and close this loophole for good. doing nothing in the wake of this tragedy is not an option.

we've heard a lot of about the shooter in this case, the alleged shooter in this case, the suspect. but we haven't heard very much about the 59 victims, all of whom leave behind family and friends and loved ones. i want to share some of those people with up. rachel parker, she was 33 years old, an employee of the manhattan beach political director in california. she was shot at that concert. she died in hospital. sandra casey was a 35-year-old teacher, a special education teacher for the past nine years. rhonda larock 42 years old. she was a victim according to her sister's facebook page. her sister says that her heart is broken. she's numb. she's feeling paralyzed. she said she is turning to got for comfort. bailey switzer was just 20 years old from bakersfield, california, according to our affiliate, she was watching the concert with her mother when the fatal shots were fired. we know she was a cheerleader and volly ballplayer. >> and nay sa tongs. her employer confirmed her death. there's also an issue of missing. i spoke to one woman who is a family friend of a man named derek t

we know the shooter was a local. if you don't mind saying so, how far are you from the strip right now? spin up and probably from my house to the strip without traffic they be 10, 15 minutes at the most. lauren: i just wanted to make sure you couldn't see anything out of window. >> not really. but i tell you what, there were helicopters everywhere. i got a call from my youngest son. he said that, turn on the tv. for where you live, there were helicopters all over the sky. it was just like a war zone. cheryl: bob, it is interesting you mention the fact there is some vacant land in the southern part of the las vegas strip. i was there three weeks ago and you are right, there is a lot of open areas they are, which as you are stating, does this mean it is frankly an easy target? i'm wondering if that is why they picked this. why did you pick that hotel, the open air festival if you will. all the investigators need to figure out. it does raise some question marks about the timing and location of the lone wolf demand shows

the shooter is dead, neutralized. the weapon was clearly an automatic weapon and person of interest, female who is being sought and the investigation is in its infancy. heather: randy, do you know anything else you can tell us about the suspect, i know his name is not being released at this point but he was a las vegas resident, was he known to authorities, do you know anything about that? >> i don't know, i don't know that. the individual has not been identified. rob: do we know why he's not being identified. why not just release this man's name at this point, what is their to lose on that? >> well, there's a couple reasons. one is because of -- they wouldn't want to tip anyone's hand that might be associated with him. if they announce the name also for next of kin, for notifications purposes but probably mostly because everyone that is associated with this individual is going to be interviewed and they don't want anybody hearing it and taking off. heather: if he lived in las vegas, do we know if he was staying at th

i understand you spoke with the shooters -- someone who knew the shooter. >> someone who cut his hair, and she has not spoken out publicly before. this is the ves first time we're hearing from calorie big. she is a woman who was a hairdresser at great clips in mesquite, nevada. that is where the gunman had his primary residence. she says between 2015 and 2017 she did cut his hair. he came in three different times. other people in the salon did see him there and they confirmed that cally big is indead his hairdresser. two months before the rampage is the very last time she saw him. ask she says that the visits weren't particularly remarkable. she didn't see any red flags. she did find him to be memorable in part because of that last visit. again, two months before the rampage he told her that he was planning on sending his girlfriend for the pill feens and he was going to be alone. here is what he told her. >> do you remember the last tiechl you saw him? >> yes. yes. the last time i saw him was probably only two months ago. it was just about two months ago. he came in and he got his ha

no confirmation that the shooter or shooters are down or located.esn't mean that there is an active shooter still on the ground but it does mean that -- batten down. just listening to that video, i spent the better part of a decade in the middle east and embedded a lot. i've also met with a lot of terrorists. and anybody who's received any significant amount of training never puts their gun or their automatic weapon on full auto. it is a sound you rarely hear in combat unless you're talking about extraordinarily close quarters in which forgive me for the phrase but it's shooting fish in a barrel or that this person's untrained or sewing mass terror. if the purpose and i'm talking just clinically here and if the purpose is to still, you choose your shots and semiautomatic. point, aim and shoot and what people all around the world are trained to do. this is something that we don't frequently hear in situations like this. first of all, it's very hard to get a gun that is full auto. you can reconfigure a weapon to make it full automatic in america and i
