here's shreveport, louisiana. all of these moving northeast and this is just the beginning of really what could be an inundation of severe weather today and really a rash of tornadoes which is really quite rare for christmas day. so here is a look from houston to new orleans the beginning of the day from now through kind of early afternoon and as we head toward afternoon and into evening, atlanta, birmingham, so dangerous tornadoes, winds 60 to 80 miles per hour, straight line winds could be a factor as well. as well as damaging hail. so you kind of get the perspective and the gravity of this. that is the severe weather side. on the back side in oklahoma city we're talking snow. although you've seen the pictures along i-40 of the dangers on the road. oklahoma city had the potential for 5 to 8 inches of snow but what's happened is we're seeing a lot of ice develop so that is cutting down on the snowfall accumulations and totals for oklahoma city. maybe now 2 to 4 but look what happens. north of little rock, 2 to 6

lee vinokur is an adjunct professor at lsu shreveport and a board certified e.r. physician.ould imagine you've seen whatever it is people cough up when they come in. let's start off with a couple of myths. researchers say chicken soup actually works to stave off the flu and boost our immune system. true or false? >> there are several studies on both sides. certainly it will make you feel better but there has been some talk there could be antioxidants in it that can help boost your immune system. depends what your mom's recipe is. harris: vitamin c? >> vitamin c, there is never really been significant studies. and if you take a lot of it is water soluable vitamin. you will just peit out anyway if you take too much. vitamin-d, studies have show, people deficient in vitamin-d tend to get more respiratory infections. don't overdo it. won't hurt to drink juice if you're sick or take vitamin-d and get it through food. harris: that would be interesting, people in colder climates because they're not getting as much sun. >> right. jon: when you have a cold, how do you know you are in

shreveport. doctor, at times like this i think back to what my high school principal once taught me which the brain is organ like any other in the body. just like any other it can get sick. >> yeah. absolutely, it is just terrible that we have to have tragedies like this we have a mental health crisis today in the united states. in the last decade services have shrunk, psychiatric hospitals have closed. and the e.r. unfortunately knows very well that when there's a crisis related to mental health, everybody ends up in the e.r. and it backs up the e.r. because we have no place to send these people for more definitive help after the crisis. it is a big problem. jon: why is that, as a society we have closed down so many of these mental health centers and so forth? >> well, i think, you know, some of it is budget terri of course. i mean people are cutting and, hospitals dedicated strictly to psychiatric issues have just been squeezed like other hospitals and also, if you think about sometimes the peo
