david shuster has more on that on "real money". okay david, let's talk about these numbers. they're coming from oxfam, the charity group. what do they say? >> they show that the income gap, the gap between the wealthiest and poorest continues to get wider and the middle class is starting to ar shrink. the theory is there's a certain limit to for example how many items of clothing or restaurants that a wealthy person can go to and if you can make those more affordable for a wider section of people you help economic growth. this is what's astounding richelle. if you take the top 85 wealthiest people in the world just the top 85, they control as much wealth as the bottom 3.5 billion people. that's how wide the gap has

i want to engage david shuster on a couple of points. let me put water on it, cold or whatever it is. seems we saw two speeches, the president's state of union and the republican response that were about as safe as you get for big speeches. you would have to point to me the moment in the speech that moved the media in either direction for either side in the two speeches. i listened to governor richards talk about disappointment over not getting more out of the foreign policy debate. there is not a clean narrative on any of the conflict zones in the middle east, in syria. it's really a palestine peace talks. there is no clean narrative that the president can talk to and say we are getting real traction, we have an opportunity

david shuster has the story. >> for the last several years the u.s. federal reserve has kept interest rates low, keeping the cost of borrowing down, and investors placing their moneys on emerging markets, turkey, india and brazil where rates of return are often higher than other investments. meanwhile china has helped fuel the growth, but now that the fed is letting rates go higher and china just reported a slow down in manufacturing for the first time in six months, investors are getting nervous. >> china certainly is important to many emerging markets, especially those that are commodity exporters. so any signal or any indication that china's growth is slowing even more and this manufacturing index that was released last week points in that direction, those kind of indicators of even weaker chinese growth i think begin to get a lot of players in these markets quite worried and quite upset. not just about china but also about the ramifications for other emerging markets. >> over the last few days investors have been pulling their cash out of emerging

david shuster. thank you. the u.s.military is investigating it's second helicopter crash in two days. one crew member is missing after one helicopter went down into the ocean off the coast. one person died and the military is looking into why it crashed. this comes when investigators try to figure out why an air force helicopter crashed in england. officials say the chopper was on a low-level training mission at the time. that helicopter, and the one that crashed off virginia's coast were both made by the sikorsky company based in connecticut. it said it would offer any assistance it can to investigators. finally it starts to warm up across the country, now begins the process of assessing the damage from this week's record cold spell. 20 people have died as a result of the extreme cold and the deep freeze could cost the u.s. committee $5 billion. economy $5 billion. that comes from low production and not going out shopping or going out for a meal. we'll learn more about this anticipated warm up, rebecca. >> meteorologi

david shuster is here with more details. >> reporter: debra lee james had a news conference at the pentagon and announced 37 air force officers and other personnel involved in missile situations both for drug use and cheating. this stems from an investigation that began a few weeks ago at the air force base in montana where two officers were stripped of their responsibilities after it was found that they were using drugs while on duty. that investigation then spread to other air force bases where they were apparently getting their drugs, and the air force has discovered a network up to 37 people engaged not only passing each other drugs but helping one another learn how to cheat on some of the proficiency tests and how to be officers i n the missile silos, they have to pass certain exams and the allegations are out there that some of these officers were cheating on th on the exams to p their jobs. these certificates have to sit in the silos day after day without much prospect that they'll have to do anything. it's long been a challenge to keep them from being bored and faced allegations of

david shuster is here. >> the justices did not rule in favor or against the ban.it simply issued a stay until the issue waned its way through the system. several have been married since a district court judge in utah determined, but utahing argued that these marriages were an affront to the state's ability to define marriage. the supreme court issued the stay this morning without comment. so there will be no more gay marriages and celebrations like these in utah for at least several months. >>> now some of our viewers may think, well wait a second. i thought the supreme court ruled in favor of gay marriage last spring. it's true, the court found the federal defense of marriage act was unconstitutional, plus the court allowed a lower court decision to stand, but the being procedural issues avoided a decision as to whether state bans in general like california's and like utah's are constitutional. most legal experts expected the issue over stat bans would eventually come back to the supreme court but the speed with which this issue has been moving throughout the sys

ali velshi is reporting from davos, i'm david shuster, and this is "real money." >> this is "real money," and you are the important part of the show. join the live conversation. there was some intriguing news from the megaretailer target. it did not involve the breach of the customer credit cards, but it was a public relations headache. the company announced it would end health coverage for all part-time workers, more than 36,000 people. company officials say it's good news for the workers, because by target's administration there's better coverage on is state and federal insurance exchanges. the health care exchanges are gaining in popularity. as of three weeks ago 2.2 million people signed up. the department of health and human services estimated that 79% of all enrollees, selected plans that came from financial assistance. many of target's part-time workers qualified for plans. the latest figure shows that two-thirds of these people had insurance before signing up. a third did not. >> it's becoming clear that obamacare is having a hard time ensuring americans to exchanges. in the fir
