david shuster is here with more details. >> reporter: debra lee james had a news conference at the pentagon and announced 37 air force officers and other personnel involved in missile situations both for drug use and cheating. this stems from an investigation that began a few weeks ago at the air force base in montana where two officers were stripped of their responsibilities after it was found that they were using drugs while on duty. that investigation then spread to other air force bases where they were apparently getting their drugs, and the air force has discovered a network up to 37 people engaged not only passing each other drugs but helping one another learn how to cheat on some of the proficiency tests and how to be officers i n the missile silos, they have to pass certain exams and the allegations are out there that some of these officers were cheating on th on the exams to p their jobs. these certificates have to sit in the silos day after day without much prospect that they'll have to do anything. it's long been a challenge to keep them from being bored and faced allegations of
