we're still in this winter storm warning here for the sierra region. this is what you had accumulate in the past 11 hours here. we're at 7,000 feet. we're above lake level. we're near echo summit, and we're waiting for someone with the department of resources to walk out into that meadow and conduct the second snow survey of this winter season. it is important for determining the water content and it is crucial for the state's water supply. a third of the water fly comes from the snow back or at least supposed to, but of course we have been in this drought. jan third was the last snow survey. the results were horrible. they show that they only had 20% of what the water content should be at that time of the year. since then it has dropped to 10%. of course with this new snow coming down as we speak. they're expecting that percentage to go up, but even though they have not done a measurement, they do not expect this storm will have a tremendous impact. and they don't think it will make a dent in the drought. it will take more than that. we have also been

a lot of happy folks in the sierra. here's good news. we will continue to see some snow at times for our friends up at squaw valley and alpine meadows. we'll keep some snow flurries into tonight, maybe early tomorrow morning. temperatures climbing as we head into sunday and monday. needless to say, probably some of the best skiing conditions we've had so far in quite some time, with some of that fresh powder coming down. overnight, i think we'll manage another two to three inches of snow above 6,000 feet. back to the bay area, mostly cloudy skies in the south bay, as the rain pushes on off. we'll take a closer look at what's going on here. from san jose off to the east, we've got a little bit of light rain. we'll emphasize the little bit as we take a closer look here, east of san jose. we do have some showers around mt. hamilton. what we've got is a lot of cloud cover being forced to rise up over the mountains. providing just enough lift to get us just some light rain at times. you're seeing some of that around morgan hill as the pattern

and the sierra crest could pick up about 5 inches.likely an inch or two around truckee and tahoe. so, foggy with the showers increasing throughout the morning hours in the north bay, and then just a chance, peninsula, east bay, maybe a splash, but otherwise, we're looking at dry conditions for you in the south bay, also the valleys, around the livermore valley, and the warmth arrives next week. in fact, we're talking near record temperatures coming into play tuesday, wednesday. a strong offshore flow. we could even see a red flag warning by the early part of next week. but the beach hazard was posted last night for late today into tomorrow, so those northwesterly swells have been building, and it is pretty dangerous out there, so be careful. watch out for the rip currents. we could see those sneaker waves if you're headed out towards the shore. so, here's a look at the cloud cover, the front that will begin to fall apart as it pushes its way through. it's going to accompany not only a few light rain showers but some breezy conditions.

speaking of the sierra, here is a view of heavenly this morning where temperatures made it to the upper teens so it is very cold at night but getting to the upper 50s during the day and not much snow on the slopes and doesn't look like that is going to change soon, the highs could make it up into the 50s but there could be snow by midweek and anything will help because the numbers here as far as the snow pack goes pretty dismal up in the sierra, just eight% of normal for the season around lake tahoe and 16% of the snow pack and obviously we are way behind and that snow is what keeps the reservoirs full, look for those temperatures tomorrow and highs for the afternoon more 60s and even more 70s, the same is true for monday and tuesday, mostly sunny skies. notice that we are a little bit cooler by thursday but still above average, low 60s with extra clouds otherwise look for temperatures to rebound into the week end. >> time now for dine and dish with vicki liviakis. >> fans of hog island oysters are simply shell-shocked. >> yes, i am very sad, i don't want it to go, i want it to stay her

if your heading to the sierra do not forget your chains.there is a vehicle that's but now. it is only partially blocking the road. it is not causing a major delay but the right lane is partially blocked. it is still heavy on 580 west with a minor fender bender. it was already slow coming out a livermore and the alta mott. the drive time continues to increase under an hour from tracy to castro valley. >> the time is 6:33 a.m.. >> a warning this morning on the peninsula. someone is out there in person a water department employee. police in hillsborough says that the suspect told a homeowner that he needed to check for broken pipes and told them to go into different rooms to turn the water off. what they were distracted, the impostor still stings from the home. he then tells the homeowners that he needs to go get some parts. the suspect is described as a white man in his early 40's, 6 ft. 2, 220 lbs.. he was wearing a blue long sleeved t-shirt and wore sneakers. police say the real utility employees drive clearly marked vehicles and carry id.

snow in the sierra is an important resource for the state. until this winter, the snow has been the most reliable water supply for the california. echo summit is one of the spots where the state department of water resources measures the snowload throughout winter. but the first such reading taken earlier this month showed the snowpack less than 10 percent of normal. some of the ski resorts like sierra at tahoe ski resort averages about 300 inches of annual snowfall, and right now they have about 66 inches. but marketing manager says they are making the best out of the situation. california's water crisis worsens by the day. there are cobwebs in the rain gauge. and very little new snow to measure in the sierra. kron four's rob fladeboe shows you. the grim picture emerging in the mountains around lake tahoe. im here at echo summit, along highway, 50 about ten miles south of lake tahoe. in a normal year i would need snowshoes to get where i am right now. cabins like this one would be buried. but not this year. the snow where im standing is only

so snow levels in the sierra still remain dangerously low. the latest survey shows the state's snowpack is at 12 percent of normal for this time of year. only one and a half inches of rain was recorded from october through december. the lowest total on record dating back to 1895. the northern and central sierra snowpack provides about a third of the state's water supply. last year was also the state's driest year since records started being kept. visit any reservoir in california and you'll see just how bad the drought is. the government's latest drought report shows the problem is getting worse. the latest map from the federal government shows nine percent of california is now experiencing what is classified as "exceptional drought." that's the most serious category. and the first time it's been recorded in the state since the government began issuing these maps 15-years ago. the area includes parts of santa clara and santa cruz counties. two thirds of the state is now in the second-worst category of "extreme drought." and 90-percent of the
