it is exactly what the northern sierra needed. >> 58. >> the northern sierra insert -- currently is sitting at 39% of the average. a huge gain from a few days ago and is only at 7%. they have been hoping for a miracle march but started the month with just that. for the first time this season resorts like sierra of tahoe recovered some losses after the threat of drought finally seeming far away. the sierra just need two more storms like the one we had. >> there is such thing as a miracle march. we believe it here so don't put the skis and snowboards away just yet. it is still shaping up to be an incredible season as we have much of the season left to come. >> we have more storm activity forecasted this coming weekend. we don't know how well of a producer it will be but it is still promising to get us in shouting range of decent levels here. >> this is great news for water resources. but with mother nature it you cannot underestimate her. right now the avalanche risk is very high. they're asking folks to stay out of the country or if you go make sure you're going with a buddy. of the weekend

how are the roads looking now in the sierra?there are still looking very snowy because indeed there is still snow falling up over interstate 80 and donner pass but caltrans is doing their best to keep the snow off the roads. >> are you anticipating any more road closures, 80 closed for several hours today and unfortunately there's no good detour. what do you think will happen in the coming hours? >> we can't predict that because we don't really know what the weather is going to do but there is another round of storm coming through. it's supposed to come in probably between 10:00 and midnight and last through late tomorrow morning. whether or not those snowfalls will be so intense and combined with the heavy winds that we saw therefore creating whiteout conditions i don't know if that's going to happen again tonight or not. we'll hope for the best and hopefully we'll keep interstate 80 open. >> are you letting trucks through now? >> yes, we are letting them through starting at 5 p.m. today. so everybody goes up over the pass exce

the north tonight and giving us more wet weather across the bay area, as we mentioned, snow in the sierra with these blizzard conditions. i'll have a look at those exact totals coming up in about 19 minutes. >>> thank you, jeff, a lot of flooding on the roads today as well. looking at oakland, a slick drive turned dangerous. chp is investigating a crash near concord that left a 5-year-old girl dead, happened before 9:00 this morning. the suv they were in went off the road and down an embankment. we are hearing from investigators that the child -- the children were restrained properly in the car. ms. hernandez is live in emeriville, dangerous conditions. >> reporter: we're along interstate 80 in emeriville. it is dry so far, but that certainly was not the case this morning. in fact, i'm told there were so many accidents emergency responders could barely keep up. . the driving rain made the morning commute a nightmare for many. it caused accidents all over the bay area, including this one on highway 242 in concord. >> i couldn't have time to react. you know, it hit us, and i almost hit the

sierra, take a look at what is falling here. snow levels below pines, below 3500, maybe 3000 feet this morning. down to 2500 feet at times over the course of the next 24 hours or so. so the winter weather advisory remains in place for the lake tahoe area and along the west slope meaning folks trying to get up along 50 or 80 with winter weather advisory replains in -- remains in place. when all is said and done in any case if you are heading to the sierra be prepared for that, you may find it treacherous, hazardous at times. the future model shows what is going on as we get into the afternoon. notice over our hills primarily and down over portions of the south bay, we'll see scattered shower activity. we are now about sunset. another round beginning to move thigh the bay area. not completely clear. into 11:00, another round coming our way, light scattered stuff. temperature wise it's a cool start out there. 40 degrees right now santa rosa. upper 40s in oakland and 47 expected in livermore. as we get into tomorrow we do finally dr

rob, that's just a sampling of what folks are seeing in the sierra.d they got a huge dumping of snow. >> we will look at the totals. the sierra, some spots almost double the base they had throughout the entire winter. it's been a relatively dry year in the sierra. that changed over the last three days. squaw valley, 93 inches of snow coming down over the last week. you can see from heavenly down to mammoth mountain, about five to almost seven feet of snow. today, well, the snow has stopped. we have these gorgeous views. resort at squaw creek, it's 7 degrees. that snow is not going anywhere. we will see upper 20s around lake tahoe. pretty view looking back to san francisco. chilly by our standards, close to 40, feels-like temperature, closer to 34 when you combine the wind speed. san francisco close to 40. cooler as you head inland. some of the valleys up towards the north bay, in the mid 30s. spider web is back in san jose. 38 now. we will see highs climbing towards the mid 50s. north bay valley, cold enough for patchy roadway ice. look out for that,

>> lots more snow to come this week in the sierra.show you numbers from a pretty promising march. right now we're getting a bit of a break. i'm pinpointing a few heavier showers over glen ellen, very specific because it's not widespread. we'll zoom out. the majority of the bay area is dry, one new shower developing oval immediate a. that will -- over alameda. top of the month snowpack in california was 19%. it has nearly doubled in less than two weeks. we're going from 19% to 36%. i'm hopeful will be in the mid- 40s by the end of this week with perhaps more snow in the second half of march, wonderful news there. it is cooler outside, temperatures falling throughout the afternoon. we're now down to 54 in livermore, 59 in san jose, not much rain but plenty of clouds and the clouds will keep us mild overnight, fremont 47, napa 43, san rafael, 50 for a low in san francisco. we had a boundary move through this morning, but that's not the end of the rain story because the area of low pressure responsible for that front will meander to our n

heavy snow continues in the sierra where a blizzard warning is in place in the greater lake tahoe area. extremely dangerous whiteout conditions are expected tonight into early friday morning. on the satellite you can see the low still spinning off the coast. it's not in a hurry to move so it will continue to spin more showers our way through saturday. more snow is likely over our local mountains and snow levels could drop as low as 1,500 feet. it will be a mix of sunshine and showers tomorrow with cool highs only in the upper 40s and 50s. showers and cool weather continue on saturday. sunday looks moslt sunny and dry and slightly warmer. another storm is possible by wednesday. bringing heavy snow and strong wind to the sierra and steady rain for most of the day to the bay area. this was the downpour. it sent a pine tree toppling onto power lines in oakland breaking a pair of poles, cutting power for a dozen customers no major outages to report at this hour. there was plenty of work for windchill wipers. the streets got soaked. was anyone unlucky enough to be caught outside without an umbrella? on the storm watch we have coverage tonight live in the north bay and in the santa cruz mountains. let's track this storm first. >> we've gone from widespread downpour mode to scatter downpour mode with the majority of the bay area not getting rain but where it is raining, that's near sonoma county, lake county currently pouring another round of steady rainfall coming toward santa rosa. raining heavily. north to middletown in clearlake, the pink you see embedded in the showers is the high elevation snow happening. speaking of high elevation snow it's been a winter day with snow levels 3000 feet and falling. lot of snow falling throughout the day. a blizzard warning th

of course there goes that sierra snow. look at how much snow they are expecting, this is taking the timeline through saturday. a couple more inches in rain, up to 48 inches in kentwood and the chance for thunderstorm with the low snow levels will continue tonight and into the start of your weekend. >>> as you said much calmer than yesterday. the roads as the sun comes up the roads will get a chance to completely dry out. maybe slick on and off ramps. we also have the road weather index shows it's still wet coming past sfo and the east bay through say ward, north of 238 looks like it may have gotten dampened as well. the south bay no major problems. we had that earlier spinout reported 101 at moffett it's out of the roadway. slowing where that camera vianey showed had water on the lens, you see it's sweeping right across this portion of the south bay through silicon valley. as we look over here we still have the slowing south 880 heading down toward 92 but it's easing up so they must have cleared most of the activity there

sierra snow still coming down really good. we'll track all of the moisture for you throughout the day and talk more about the temperatures coming up. >>> chp is on the scene of a crash on northbound 280 near stevens creek boulevard reported to be blocking a lane. but as you can see, speeds are in the green, no delays. it is still very early. report of a crash on southbound 101 near san tomas expressway. it doesn't appear to be slowing anyone down. if you are going towards the bay bridge toll plaza, a little backup in the cash lanes but we are checking in problem-free, 10 minutes into san francisco. >>> a san francisco firefighter has been arrested after being accused of stockpiling an arsenal of high-powered firearms and making threats to kill. maria medina has the details you will see only on "5". >> reporter: more than two dozen guns, half of them assault weapons, allegedly discovered in san francisco firefighter's home which violated a temporary protective order filed against him. this is youtube video of the type of guns f

so the snow level in the sierra goes above 7,000 feet. it will be a wet sierra cement and it will drop heading towards thursday into friday. watch the moisture continue to lift in and that's coming in from the west southwest. and it's saturated. so we will have off and on rain most of the day. it's mild. that's for sure. now a little southerly breeze will kick in. santa cruzn the -- into the santa cruz mountains an inch and to an inch and a half of rain. it looks like santa maria vandenberg getting more rain than santa barbara. maybe they are on the string of it but the heaviest by far has been a little to the northeast. -- north end. if you are head together sierra, wenter storm warning starts at 5 p.m. lake level, maybe a foot of wet snow passes in the crest. and 3 to 4 feet that snow level comes down thursday into friday. for us off and on rain, fog is out there. so watch out for that. any breaks in the clouds i don't think they will last very long and the rainfall forecast for us, over the next couple days, will be pretty impressive f
