it comes to how climate change is changing california in unprecedented ways, the snowpack in the sierra is probably the biggest canary in the coal mine and we saw the most romantic changes happening here than anywhere else even in the reservoirs and here's a quick explanation on why the last three weeks has set records in terms of concerning loss and that is what we look like from space today and you can see it looks pretty good in this is what we looked like back on april 1 and not a lot of difference although the state was more green than. but what you have to look at is how much water is being stored in the snowpack. we did have some good news on april 1 when we did the big snow survey of the year and on average the central sierra was at 63% of what should have for the water it was storing in the snowpack. today's that 37% and you think it makes sense it should go down but no. it was 63% of average for april 1 and we should still be close to that on april 21. we are talking about what the average content is for today's date and that is the dramatic change in this is what is really th

that is going on in the sierra while here at home the skies look like this. that is the tri-valley and this has been a glorious day here at home with temperatures in the low 70s but if you look at the view there are some mid-level clouds out there to the east trying to build and that is part of the much larger picture for northern california right now in here at home the high definition doppler doesn't read anything but just over i 80 and the sierra there will be snow falling in some of the higher elevations and if we look at how this comes together on the big picture all you have to do is pick out that huge counter clockwise to the east and that is a pretty dominant weather feature right now, which is just a little too far east for us here at home to know what is going on but the sierra is getting light snow out of it and it could be the last we see for snow in the sierra for some time and if we play forward on the future cast cut tomorrow the clouds will build over the mountains but that storm is starting to move away tomorrow and we won't feel its influenc

notice it is still snowing in the sierra at that point. that's going to be an issue for travel in the mountains. more on that in a second. let's talk about how much you might get. member the timing is the majority, 1st half of the day sunday with better totals in the north bay pick a we could pick up a quarter of an inch of rain for many spots in the north bay and down here to the southbay and in the east bay pick of the totals are much less. that is typical. more mountain barriers to get rained down into the valley and the totals are usually going to be a little bit lighter there and the system is usually weekends by the time we have gotten that first half. if we look at the other side of the states, there is the snow in the sierra. most of that coming on sunday. that is a foot of snow on donner pass. that is i-80 pick of anybody takes a drive over the sierra, 90% of us are going over i-80. we can go highway 50. that would be. summit. those are the two main ones. anyone in the bay area would go to and from tahoe or reno or anywhere else.

but if you look at the big picture, it is snowing in the sierra. this is not going to make up for the deficit in our snowpack, but it was enough to mess with the drive today and make for pretty pictures in the sierra. and if you see this on the real big picture, there's the storm. big area of low pressure, so that's why we got snow in the sierra. we did not get any rain in the bay area. that storm was too far inland, and inside slider. but we still felt its presence. and now the marine layer will start leaving, and watch what happensas it leaves. that system goes out over toward the rockies. and look what comes back as soon as it leaves, we barely noticed it besides that shot over the bridge today. by friday morning, everyone wakes up to gray skies, even the tri-valley. it will be one of those gray mornings for just about everybody area the real headline is what will happen to our daytime highs. today, exactly like yesterday, just a few degrees above average. but watch the trend over the next five days. 69 is an average daytime high for us. we will

here's a look at the sierra nevada.tunately as we're in this dry pattern the snow pack is still dwindling. as you take a look at this live picture from tahoe just absolutely gorgeous. sunshine here as well with a gentle breeze. not nearly as windy as it was yesterday. high clouds and coastal fog in the morning. the wind will hold for bay and inland yet temperatures will come down. cooler at the coast tomorrow. cooler and windier for your friday and saturday. tonight at 7:00. patches of fog begin to expand. high clouds move in above it. and so we are going to be left with a little bit more cloud cover tomorrow afternoon and evening and those temperatures will begin to fall first tat beaches and eventually around the bay and inland. speaking of the beaches, watch out for that fog in the morning. temperatures will be in the 40s, 50s. afternoon highs in the south bay. 80 degrees in san jose. cupertino 68. it's going to be warm. on the peninsula a mix of sun and clouds. downtown san francisco 65 degrees north bay temperature

they're stored in the sierra nevada.o this is a pretty telltale sign of where we're going to be sitting for the summer season. central sierra over 50%, but still 63% great and 66% up in the northern sierra good news for the southern cascades. that's the healthiest spot. as for california and we've actually had some cold systems up further north that have helped to those areas. so there is signs of hope further north. but the sierra nevada not fairing well at all. as for conditions on radar. it is really dry out there. we are seeing some fog pushing in from the coast. that's cooling us off across the bay area today central valley still going to have daytime highs record breaking further inland. but we're tapping back into that ocean cool there. and it's streaming on inland. keeping us noticeably cooler around 10 degrees, cooler in many spots in yesterday. some of our coastal spots even cooler than that, we're going to have a deepening marine layer tomorrow morning and that actually does mean that tomorrow morning's fog is

that is sunday in the sierra. there is over a foot of new snow coming, after the story we just did in the last block, it is nice to see another foot of snow coming. but it doesn't really make much of an impact. but what it could potentially do, in fact what it almost certainly will do is disrupt travel on sunday, especially for people who are not ready for this. and there will be a lot of them. it's a sunday during the time of year when people think this is a history. and a lot of people will be trying to get back to the bay area. so if you know anybody traveling in the sierra, give them a heads-up, a foot of snow is enough for delays, definitely chain requirements as well. it's more the delays that should be top of mind. and if you look at the views here, for some that are taking i-80, or i-50, and that covers one aspect of it heard let's talk about the rain here at home. that's really the lead story in all of this. right there, that is sunday. we will just look at it in a general way, it will rain on sunday and

more than likely near the sierra, april 17th.eed the rain so badly if you're enjoying the sunshine? look at the latest drought monitor. this was released as of thursday. it gets released every thursday. april 8th, 99% of california is abnormally dry. 93% of california is under some form of drought. and 35% of california is under a extreme drought. this is a big impact we've hadr. and the california reservoirs, the four largest are currently below capacity. 72% of historical average. when you take this into consideration, we also have to look at the sierra snowpack, which is about a third of california's water supply. once that snow begins to melt in the spring, it's a big contributor. so currently right now, the sierra snowpack is about 46% of average. that is definitely not where we should be for the month of april. so hopefully, we'll see at least some sierra showers possible heading into next weekend. so, let's take a look at the next seven days here in san francisco. we've got those morning clouds hanging out and by sunday an

the sierra finally getting a dose of snow. it's not a lot of snowfall but noteworthy in the fact that we are actually getting some of it after such dry weather recently the low pressure area. that's bringing that snow has brought us in the bay area uptick in wind speeds will retrieve the high pressure is about to build back in. that's what's going to be responsible for hotter weather this weekend in the meantime, today will still be breezy, but a little calmer than yesterday was so get out there knowing you may see a breeze a time or 2, but nothing like what we had on your windy tuesday skies, nice and dry yet again. and we're going to stay that way. well, through the course of the weekend into next week, too. that's actually the biggest downside of this forecast because as we begin to heat up and conditions are already so dry now is the time are really starting to think of fire danger. i know the state's already thinking about allocations over these next few months on how to think ahead of time before fires to start 50's and
