so we've seen these daily thunderstorms firing up over the sierra, parts of the desert southwest. but unfortunately it's also sparking up some lightning strikes, and we don't get a lot of rain with those thunderstorms, there could be some new fire starts. so there is a lot of red flag warnings up from the sierra over toward nevada, and that high pressure will continue to pump in some of that monsoonal moisture as we go into the next several days. so just a heads up that if you will be going to the sierra, there will be a chance of thunderstorms and all of this coming along with our exceptional drought that we're seeing across the region. it's good to see some rain, especially for areas across nevada and arizona as well as new mexico. but you can see how extreme the drought is and most likely that rain is not going to help us out. in fact, the thunderstorms and the lightning is going to cause more problems. and then once again we just want to make sure that you do have these reminders before you make those plans that we are in an historic drought and it is not a good time to get fi

there's a red flag warning east of the sierra nevada mountains today. that's been issued by the national weather service, that's because of the dry conditions and high temps there. the increased danger comes at a time when there's fewer federal firefighters. only 70% of the hot shot crews are expected to be staffed this year. the u.s. forest department is having a hard time to find people to fill those jobs because the pay is so low. in june of next year, california is set to shut down one of its training facilities for inmate firefighters. this is part of the correctional center. governor newsom is closing that facility, it would be the jail part and the training part as part of his push to end mass encarsration in the state. those inmate firefighters, we rely on them tremendously during the fire season. they do a lot of work out there. one former federal firefighter says they are in desperate need of those fire programs to help out the ciian firefighters who are already themselves. bob redell, "today in the bay." >>> we'll keep track of what you need
