so we've seen these daily thunderstorms firing up over the sierra, parts of the desert southwest. but unfortunately it's also sparking up some lightning strikes, and we don't get a lot of rain with those thunderstorms, there could be some new fire starts. so there is a lot of red flag warnings up from the sierra over toward nevada, and that high pressure will continue to pump in some of that monsoonal moisture as we go into the next several days. so just a heads up that if you will be going to the sierra, there will be a chance of thunderstorms and all of this coming along with our exceptional drought that we're seeing across the region. it's good to see some rain, especially for areas across nevada and arizona as well as new mexico. but you can see how extreme the drought is and most likely that rain is not going to help us out. in fact, the thunderstorms and the lightning is going to cause more problems. and then once again we just want to make sure that you do have these reminders before you make those plans that we are in an historic drought and it is not a good time to get fi

the snow pack in the sierra has vanished. the snow pack was 59% of average. so water companies all the way down to los angeles adjusted their books to calculate the run off that number would provide. the water never showed off. instead of feeding into rivers and reservoirs, it melted into the ground. two years of drought left the ground so dry, the water sank in the the soil and never ran off. it is the first time the usual formulas failed. let's go outside right now from the north bay, you can see walnut creek, the south bay, the hills are extremely dry, we'll bring in our meteorologist jeff ranieri, we have been hearing this a lot, hot weather, the drought and it is not looking good this season. >> there is really no way out of it. just being on the defense and doing everything you can to keep your house fire safe is really going to be the best measures. as we head to the next couple of months. we just talked about the sierra snow pack. the zero percent number in mid june and july. it is the earliest the snow melted since 2000s and 15. the drought, let's lo

look what is happen be over in the sierra.eastern side of the sierra we are seeing thunderstorms and lightning popping up and that's not good news because there has not been a lot of rain to go along with that, and this surge because of monsoonal moisture in the system. and aside the lightning and the storms we are seeing, just to the east will be the heat building across the region, especially on saturday into sunday. it's going to be hot for our inland areas, but this big dome of high pressure will be to our north and that's where we could see some records set. it's going to be something making headlines, especially for portland and seattle where temperatures could be well over 100 degrees, and we know that they don't have a lot of air-conditioning in some of those areas and not used to this kind of heat. we're going to have some hot temperatures but not as hot as what we will see further to the north, so we will keep an eye on that. our temperatures reach into the low 80s today as well as tomorrow and then low 90s for the w

some thunderstorms popping up over the sierra nevada to get a real big display there this evening. all those lightning strikes popping up over the sierra nevada toward bishop a mammoth lakes pretty active out there. if you're doing some camping, some pretty dangerous stuff, too. we've got that sea breeze that continues to blow some those gusts now the 35 miles an hour into san francisco, 18 at sfo 28 in the fairfield inn is that sea breeze that is going to bring the fog low clouds back in the bay tonight and even some of the valleys as well. you can see that kind of piling on in and even some patchy drizzle along the coastline. a real possibility. some of that fog bouncing up against part of the east bay hills. maybe some patchy sneaking over to parts of the tri valley but not going to be much. i that marine they're somewhat compressed and that will keep from making its way. well, on shore. but hug the coast all day long for tomorrow. and that will keep you cool up toward the beaches if you're headed their plan on some fog and some 50's 60's co side. some 70's, maybe couple low 80'

. >> well, here in the lake tahoe basin and across the sierra the u.s. forest service says the conditions are very dry. we had a dry winter with a very small snow pack and they are seeing conditions that they normally see in late june or july. carrie thaler is the forest fire management officer with the u.s. forest service in the lake tahoe basin. she says the conditions could become critical in june for approximately 4 to 6 weeks ahead of where we would normally be in relation to fuel conditions and fire activity for this time of year. >> is that a warming mean? yes, it's very alarming. >> in response. the forest service is rallying its firefighting resources early this year. we had our resources back of their fire stations early this year prepared to respond to fires now something else that really worries the u.s. forest service and smaller fire departments around the lake tahoe basin is that there's basically no buffer between urban areas and the wilderness. and there's concern that if a fire were to start it could threaten homes and lives. it has hap

there's a red flag warning east of the sierra nevada mountains today. that's been issued by the national weather service, that's because of the dry conditions and high temps there. the increased danger comes at a time when there's fewer federal firefighters. only 70% of the hot shot crews are expected to be staffed this year. the u.s. forest department is having a hard time to find people to fill those jobs because the pay is so low. in june of next year, california is set to shut down one of its training facilities for inmate firefighters. this is part of the correctional center. governor newsom is closing that facility, it would be the jail part and the training part as part of his push to end mass encarsration in the state. those inmate firefighters, we rely on them tremendously during the fire season. they do a lot of work out there. one former federal firefighter says they are in desperate need of those fire programs to help out the ciian firefighters who are already themselves. bob redell, "today in the bay." >>> we'll keep track of what you need
