lifting up the sierra nevada and that's how we got the sierra nevada. but along that area we also see numerous earthquakes. we've seen that happening again today. in fact, this has been example of all these quakes breaking out. you can see further southward lee vining. they all started just about the same time these quakes begin to move in and pick up this afternoon. some of quakes pretty significant to you had this one here at lee vining. that was a 4.8 and then just some minor quakes just to the west of that and the one and then another one just to the north of 2 point. oh, and then you move further northward and you can see the quakes all of a sudden really start to rattle. but they've been felt all the way through bridgeport up through coalville. if you've driven along this area, you can you see how much the sierra nevada jets up a look at both quakes. well, in around the 5.9 that was built just south of topaz. you see all the located in this area and they're almost just too numerous to count and they continue throughout the evening now. so it's har

really the sierra nevada. can see that right all the way down 3.95 very active in a few driven along this area. you notice that there's some volcanic areas up there and certainly along that zone. we've seen an increase in some activity all the way down parts of southern california last year we have that activity as well. we saw some major in earthquakes out toward the desert. so here's the very latest here. and you can see all these earthquakes that have been picking up over just the past couple of hour, hour and a half or so. but continuing along this line all the way down in the mammoth lakes. you can see that area had earthquakes just a little over an hour ago. so this was not just located in one spot. this is across a good part of the sierra nevada little further north near lee vining. we have that earthquake pickup in some of these quakes. they were fairly strong. this one near lee vining was a significant quake that one of 4.83 50, then to the west of that. you have some minor quakes, but also those occu

if you've driven along the east side of the sierra nevada, you know, is how the sierra nevada just jumps almost straight up. it's really a magnificent sight. you've got one side. you've got the fair lawn plate and then on the other side, you've got what's called the north american plate. these plates are sliding against each other. in fact, in this case, the north american plate is moving westward right into the fair lawn plate. something's gotta give. and that's when we see these earthquakes. in fact, right along this walker lane fault zone. that's what we call a subduction zone. so the north american plate is basically lifting up informing the sierra nevada and that's where we get these earthquakes. it's been quite the day today and they've just started all over the place. in fact, here we go. you take a closer look now you can see toward lee vining things picking up early on this some of those earthquakes started to pop up and then it just really started to move further to the north. this first earthquake nearly vining. that was a 4.8 that cup things rocket. and then we have a couple

in the sierra tomorrow. this will turn into a bigger concern for the sierra than it is for us here at home and we don't need any lightning over there either, and it looks like that is where the focus will be over the next 48 hours and here at home the current temperatures right now have been sitting at the most part and it is a big spread. the morning lows will bring us up into the 50s in most locations for die time -- daytime highs in the upper 90s and mid-70s for much of the bay and the temperatures don't change a lot of the next seven days and there is san francisco and oakland and san jose and it's really a story of the next 24 hours and the fire weather concerns because once we finish with this the weather goes back to absolute normal and you probably won't pay a lot of attention to it, thankfully. back to you. >>> has anybody seen the giants stats? they're looking for them. can a cal the sleep number 360 smart bed is on sale now. it's the most comfortable, body-sensing, automatically-responding, energy

thunderstorms, of course, over the sierra nevada. mostly dry across the bay area with the exception of some of that fog and drizzle along the coastline. the sea more scattered showers making their way into northern california. unfortunately for the moisture coming through today. we just didn't have a real good trigger to really give some lift to the atmosphere to spring some more storms around the bay area. so overnight tonight, the models picking up on some of that cloud cover kind of rotating on through the monsoon sliding on by tomorrow morning. it does try to bring a couple raindrops in parts are in by early tomorrow morning. and then watch what happens. the monsoon kind of moves out of town that muggy this goes way by the afternoon we clear out your skies in the temperatures. we're going to really heat up tomorrow. in fact, i think spots inland you're pushing well into the upper 90's by tomorrow afternoon in the san francisco about 69 degrees and comfortable. still a couple clouds along the coastline. generally 60's out toward t

we're also tracking some thunderstorm activity over the sierra.ed you in the last half hour, even a flash flood watch in place until eight o'clock this evening for the sierra for us. cloud cover again will be moving inland in areas over the east bay shore as well as the north they expected to wake up tomorrow morning with the partly cloudy skies scattered showers in the forecast for like tahoe, not only through today, but there is a possibility of thunderstorms tomorrow as well as sunday. if you do have plans for the weekend that will take you into the sierra for us, we'll start out with the morning clouds the afternoon sun but over the sierra, you can see how the blues and the yellows pop up once again, checking in on lake tahoe right now, south lake tahoe reporting 76 degrees. mostly cloudy skies. a few scattered showers. their upper seventies over truckee, so it feels muggy out there and for the weekend, not much change upper seventies expected for the afternoons saturday, as ay but the chance of thunderstorms right now the flash flood wash. sh

those ions were much higher in the sierra. quite honestly, the sierra is a much bigger concern on that front, when we start talking about the possibility for dry lightning. let's get into the seven-day forecast here. we'll highlight as many locations as we can. we'll start out with a look across the seven-day forecast, calling on the daytime highs for san francisco, oakland and san jose. you can see the difference. it'll be in the low 80s for the next few days in san jose. if we take a look at the forecast, in a slightly different way now, break it up into regions that define inland, he spanned the top line, north bay is the middle one, and there is your coast, going on the bottom. you can really see the spread. look how much warmer it is for the human valleys in the east bay compared to places like santa rosa. you can really pick up the difference is if you can look at the seven-day that way. that's what they're going to be doing more often for you here. >> we're going to have to cross our fingers and we don't get an encore o

yeah, let's take a look at your sierra forecast.a lot of you heading out to the sierra to celebrate your 4th of july. >> and right now we're tracking calmer drier conditions for most of this year. truckee saw pop-up thunderstorms. and we're seeing that thunder and lightning storm to the south and east of south lake tahoe. we're right now topaz lake and bear valley seeing widespread thunderstorms out there. so severe weather impacting your area and we still are not out of the woods just yet because we're expecting to possibly see dry lightning throughout the sierra starting tonight at 11 o'clock through 11 o'clock sunday morning. so remember, even the sierra is under extreme drought conditions and any lightning spark could certainly spark and spread wildfires there, especially with outflow. winds. upwards of 40 miles per hour or less. if any dry lightning does form. and so that's what we're going to have a red flag warning with that high fire danger alert lasting tonight throughout the overnight hours even into your sunday morning. t

in the sierra, people were holding on. >>> you can see on the did you feel it map and as you can expect it will concentrate closer to the quake. this is our usual view of the bay area that we show you at the start of the weather cast and look how far away the center of this is. it is way over here along the nevada border and this is the size of the quake that we could feel it that far away and this magnitude has been upgraded to 6.0 and so far i have seen 32 aftershocks officially being reported on the website and the usgs themselves and their press conference said there were 40 and they are likely quality controlling that data and putting it on the website. here is the did you feel it map you can see reports on the lighter end of the spectrum toward the bay area and closer to where the quake occurred and you get into the green and yellow indicating more sustained shaking and it was strong enough to cause some rockslides and this occurred near the antelope valley fault system and there are a lot of them that run along 395 there. and a lot of the aftershocks occurred along that or near i

we have had the series of lightning strikes up in the southern sierra haven't seen anything north or west of fresno, though. and that does include us in the bay area, although there are few offshore showers to know just west of the bay area. the area is nice and quiet as of this point as we do keep a close eye on any chance of afternoon thunderstorms that to result in some lightning strikes and obviously that does up fire danger and fire risk current temperatures range anywhere from the 50's 60's to just the low 70's and fairfield right now really mild way to start the morning for most areas temperatures not falling off much last night. that's actually a sign of the muggy feel that we do have for some areas when the air holds a little bit more water vapor in it. sometimes it takes a bit for those temperatures to drop and that's exactly what we saw last night. not a whole lot of dropping going on as far as our evening lows goes, we do have that chance of isolated thunderstorms mostly during early afternoon hours, which will be keeping an eye on all day for you today will be our warmes

thank you for some very hazy conditions across the high sierra nevada. look at all the dozens of lightning strikes popping up this afternoon across the sierra today we're fortunate. that was a real good trigger to see any lightning locally. now they did have some rain come along with that. but maybe not enough to prevent fires from starting and likely going to see some of those storms erupting out there once again tomorrow so that not only there but up the quincy fire. you see some of the showers moving on by right now. no lightning strikes there today, tomorrow that may be different. we've got more. the monsoon that's headed in their direction. the smoke forecast really has spared the bay area with all these fires westerly component to the wind is keeping the smoke away from the bay area rolling right over the top. that ridge of high pressure. you're getting in nevada you get in a high to haul. you get into montana. even the eastern half the united states seeing some of that smoke. but the bay area with that on shore. wind keeping things mostly clear as
