but things are already getting slicd up in the sierra nevada. your view outside at your east bay hills camera is showing some of the low cloud cover right now. it is just light rain to even misty conditions. we're not surprise will has his head down indicating that it's not as rainy as it once was because a lot of that light rainfall is really just mist and low gray at this point. you are seeing some light snow and rain mix up in the sierra nevada. look how high you have to get along highway 50 or up into a t before you even start to see that snowfall right along lake level. it is solid rain at this point. that is all going to convert to snow during overnight hours tonight. that's when you're going to get some really slick conditions. so the sooner the better as far as your sierra travels goes, definitely. don't be traveling overnight up into the sierra as our next cold front will be dropping in during our overnight hours. this is 02:30am that line of showers right along the cold front will pick up rainfall in the bay area. heavy isolated pocket

pg&e reported 69,000 outages for the sierra. the snow is causing a lot of problems now, in the long run it's going to help us a lot in term of our drought. and tonight we are joined by dr. andrew short, a meteorologist and lead scientist at berkeley central sierra snow lab at donner pass. how are you holding up? are you snowed in up there? >> yes, it's quite snowy up here indeed. took 40 minutes to watch 50 yards to do the measurements so to say it's rough getting around is an understatement. >> that means a lot of snow if it took you that long to walk just to get the measurement. and you measured the snowiest december on recording right? more than 15 feet so far, that shattered a record for december? >> that is correct. the previous record was held in 1970, and it was 179 inches. and today we're up to 194 inches at our 8:00 a.m. measurement, so it blew that old record out of the water and looks like there's more snow on the way. >> let's talk about the snow pack. we need to right type of snow for a snow pack. are we getting it

this is what it looks like in the sierra.we have active snowfall coming down and, yes, we still have rain in parts of the bay area. pretty much widespread, light to moderate at times and i will zoom in on our stormranger. up through mill valley, highway 101 we have lighter rain coming down but pockets of the yellow and the orange that you see there, that's what we could see, heavier downpours at times. the morning commute will be soggy, especially down through the san josÉ mountains. notice the approaching rains are here, and still a couple rain-shadowed areas. you will see on and off rain through the first half of our rain today. notice the pink color change here. cold and low snow levels with the arrival of a cold front, and this will bring us a change into snow and possibly a little sleet at times into tuesday evening, especially for some of the higher elevation areas here in the bay area. we saw snow on some of our peaks this weekend, and elevations at 4,000 feet, 3,000 feet, and that's common, and once it falls below the

sierra nevada see snow piling up from 4 to 8 feet. you also be looking at that on i 5 north of redding to. and if you're just staying in the bay just going to be very wet. christmas day showers on and off through sunday monday into tuesday. so not a whole lot of improvement for your travels back home after the holiday. i mentioned that 4 to 8 feet of snow piling up in the sierra will also have blowing snow on roadways right now. snow levels about 4500 feet. it's going to fall a lot lower into early next week and that winter storm warning stays until sunday. not just for this year but also upper elevations of lake county. now today's daytime highs 50's to low 60's. the last day with temperatures that will be in the 60's anywhere across the bay as we do gradually see things cooling down. san carlos in foster city each at 62 with san jose right at 60 degrees, mostly in the 50's for inland areas livermore. you'll be at 58 oakland at 59 degrees right along the bay antioch and benicia at 54 degrees for your daytime highs tomorrow. not a who

it's 98% of average in the snow totals in central sierra and southern sierra more than 100% of average really benefiting the snow packs. let's keep it coming radar for though, tracking dry conditions not just for the bay area but also for the sierra as well. but we are going to notice additional storms. most of this upcoming week starting monday night and lasting all of your christmas week holiday. we're going to see storm after storm bringing more feet of fresh powder to the sierra snow levels going to dip below 3,000 feet as early as monday night, believe it or not, we could see 2 to 3 feet of mountain snow throughout the highest peaks of the sierra and also one to 3 inches of valley rain. in addition to gusty winds as well. so that's why i'm really urging you to take advantage of the dry weather this weekend and monday afternoon as well. that's going to be the latest because it's going to be pretty hazardous. dangerous driving conditions after monday night from now. until then, though, south lake tahoe and truckee we're tracking moment that mostly sunny skies, but we could see some

not a good time to drive up to the sierra.y upwards of 90 inches of snow expected out of this storm, gusting winds and also headed into monday, as the cold front passes through with the cold air, we could see local snow on top of the bay area mountains. i want to take this opportunity to explain what is a atmospheric river. it's a long narrow flow of tropical air that brings about 50% of the rainfall. think about it as a river in the sky. it has a lot to do with climate change. they may be longer and wider with 50% more rain, and how does this impact us? the big changes in that is there could be a higher change of larger swings from drought to flooding. we have been in extreme drought in california for quite sometime, and it's having an impact on how we see the rain here and how much or how often or how not often these impacts comes to the area. the next several days, we will have active rainfall totals through wednesday, and we will get a cold air blast heading into sunday and monday, and then the storm really making its impa
