let's get a look at both the sierra and the bay area's first satellite radar goes first with the sierra because we are seeing snowfall piling up up there as much as 18 inches that upper elevations from lake tahoe all the way down to some pretty low elevations. bear opposes a community in the foot hills just east of the central valley. and they're actually getting some snow at those lower elevations. now here in the bay area, we also have a little snow to talk about. it's above san jose right around mount hamilton, one to 3 inches expected there were still holding on to a few light rain showers for morgan hill on up. 85 towards los gatos where we just saw conditions coming down just minutes ago on the peninsula from palo alt

snow in the sierra. this is a change for them. now, the rest of the week looks to remain the same as this storm system exits and high pressure does build back in a bit to finish out the forecast. we will be looking at highs at their warmest to start the weekend on friday. after that, though, we'll see our next system diving on into the region. now, this is going to take a similar track as to the low pressure area that just brought snow to the sierra but left us dry to skirting just to our east. it does offer a better opportunity, though, of any sort of light shower to reach the bay area. it's still just a shot of rainfall. if we even do see anything at all. and if we do get rainfall, that's going to be very, very light. but nonetheless, this is the sign of a pattern shift that is at least bringing snow to the sierra and other parts of the west, like the great basin in the central rockies, even though the bay area has really gotten in the mix just yet. now, temperatures today, we'll be mostly in the 60's,

as for the sierra nevada snow fall has really tapered off winter storm warnings. winter weather advisories. they're gone now. any chance of showers for the bay area. also having moved out yesterday saw some hail from san ramon on out towards the inland east bay. some thunderstorms out towards antioch and also some brief thunderstorm activity down in the south bay. so turned out to be quite the active afternoon. as far as those thunderstorms kicking off yesterday this morning, it is indeed, really cold. all we have left is first precipitous precipitation goes. is that remaining light snowfall mostly hanging out east of the crest of the sierra nevada, out towards the great basin in nevada. most of california really having drive out now. now, even as we work our way into the afternoon, temperatures will maintain that cool feel after a very cold morning with those freeze, more warnings in effect later today. you'll want those jackets close at hand. as we do look at such cold conditions through the day, only in the low 50's for most areas with winds factored in, making

we saw snow in the sierra nevada.since cleared out as this low pressure area that brought it to us begins to exit the region. we have another storm system that is actually set to follow very similar trajectory. is that low that just left us on into early next week. that one is going to result in the return of some snowfall in the sierra come sunday night into monday. big question is will we get any rain in the bay area from it? it's looking fairly unlikely. and if we do see anything, it's going to just be a sprinkle or 2 into the start of next week. as for today, dry, sunny and looking at 60's to low 70's concord, antioch, delay own app and santa rosa among just a few spots. that will be right at 70 degrees today, thursday and friday, similar to today. as far as temps go saturday, the warmest and then we use to downhill into the upper 50's by monday and tuesday. that storm system bringing with it, sierra snow and just a cool windy forecast here in the bay reyna. all right, john, thank you for that. hey, traffic is. >>

his first snowpack is in the sierra. it is beautiful.t do anything about it other than enjoy it for the time being save as much water as you can. radar shows those clear and dry conditions that we have stretching through the weekend from the bay area on up into the sierra nevada. we will see a few clouds passing overhead tomorrow morning, but those will be out by mid afternoon and really the start your weekend friday afternoon. looks really good to go. we do have a modest offshore wind today, calmer than yesterday was so winds have calmed down. temperatures have risen all in all a very pleasant end to the week. now talking about something next week. that is what we need to talk about, which is the return of some more snowfall in the sierra nevada. this looking likely into monday and tuesday. now, as the system passes to the east of the bay area doesn't look like it's going to pack much of a punch it all for us. aside from cooling things down and making for a cold breeze across the bay come monday and tuesday may see a couple of sprinkles

>> so much on the plate, very happy we're finally getting rainfall, sierra snow. we haven't seen any significant systems since january 7th, 45 days since our last big system swept through the area. the sierra got in on some snowfall. we picked up 2-12 inches. but the snowpack is slipping. while the numbers seem low, it is really kind of a trend we've been seeing over the past several years. when we look at this data, from 2002 to 2011, 60% of thesyme tie had 100% or better. over the past few years we've seen the numbers ship. we've only had two years that were 100% since 2011. right now, we don't have any definite news that march is going to bring us record-setting rain or snowfall. you can get more details in our climate section. >>> you can see scattered areas of rainfall moving in across the bay area. wanted to get you into the heaviest pocket right here over the east bay heading to the south. we do have isolated small hail with this. in fremont, do expect rainfall to pick up. be careful if you're out there on the roadways. i do think the rainfall will start to

there is a good amount of snow as the sierra.oday the california department of water resources conducted the second snow survey of the season at phillips station. the manual survey recorded 48 and a half inches of snow depth and a snow water equivalent of 19 inches, which they say is 109% of the february. first average for this location, a dry january has our sierra snow pack down to about average for this time of year. but today has been really dry start to 2022. with everybody agreeing we need more winter storms in february and march to be. >> at the levels needed. a lawrence is back and launched the snow survey. not looking good. no, that's been really kind of an all-or-nothing season, of course, with all that great rain in october, then it shut off again in november or the comeback. >> and really dump in december. then all of a sudden it's quiet again. so here's where we right now. still still pretty impressive considering things have been dry for so long now, 90% of normal in the northern sierra nevada, 90% of normal in the

let's get a look at both the sierra and the bay area's first satellite radar goes first with the sierra because we are seeing snowfall piling up up there as much as 18 inches that upper elevations from lake tahoe all the way down to some pretty low elevations. bear opposes a community in the foot hills just east of the central valley. and they're actually getting some snow at those lower elevations. now here in the bay area, we also have a little snow to talk about. it's above san jose right around mount hamilton, one to 3 inches expected there were still holding on to a few light rain showers for morgan hill on up. 85 towards los gatos where we just saw conditions coming down just minutes ago on the peninsula from palo alto up to san mateo. also some light spots of rainfall both along one, 0, one and 2.80, right now for a few slick spots. there. also some light showers in portions of san francisco and a couple of misty to drizzly spots across barren county and across the east bay hills. so all in all, a pretty active morning going on right here. nice to be seeing that rainfall in break

the uc berkeley sierra snow lab recorded just under 2 inches near donner summit. that's the first measurable snowfall in 37 days. the dry spell was the longest and 51 years of monitoring sierra winters. >>> california's dry spell is worse than just that. >> researchers tell us the state is in the grips of a megadrought, the worst in 1200 years. kpix 5's devin fehely on that date of that looks back over hundreds of years. >> reporter: there has certainly been the occasional wet year during that time, but it was preceded and then followed by several dry years. the researchers say we may need to fundamentally change how we think about rainfall in california and the western united states, because there is no end in sight to the current drought. researchers examined tree rings from roughly 30,000 trees along the western united states, providing a biological snapshot of wet and dry conditions over hundreds of years. >> you can look at the growth rings on trees and turn that information into information on soil moisture or rainfall or stream flow, going back much further

so snowfall tapers off later today for that sierra nevada. rest of the week after this. we do look to remain dry as we will through the weekend. now early next week, we do have another storm system dropping in very similar track as to what we saw from this latest system, which means more than likely to see that snow in the sierra. the question mark is the rain for the bay, a slim chance of it. some of our latest model runs are showing not really that much of an opportunity for us. so it looks like next week may not be panning out for us, but we are seeing that snow in the sierra as well as some snow in the great basin and central rockies areas that also desperately need it. so hoping these are signs of change. a pattern shift that would eventually get us back to maybe a march miracle just around the corner. we can all keep our fingers crossed for that. now winds today will be noticeable, especially near the coast in through our upper elevations across the bay area. you're already seeing those this morning making for that cool, brisk feel. see, you got to bundle up today.
